Its finally finished!!!

I started planning and ordering parts in December for this build, with the intention of having it done in January. Unfortunately I had some medical issues while travelling that left me unable to work for the most part of 3 months (Thankfully all is good now though) this forced me to keep the parts I already had on the shelf and the build to be put on the back burner till I got back up and moving forward again.

That said the build itself was everything I expected it to be and enjoyed every minute of it. it went smoothly with no real issues, besides overclockers sending me the wrong monitor.

Chosen Parts

CPU I7-4790k,

It speaks for itself really I wanted something powerful that could handle Gaming without breaking a sweat and tackle video editing without issue.

CPU COOLER Cooler Master Nepton 240m

Was set on having an all in one liquid cooler and naturally it came down to the nepton or kraken x61, I went with the nepton as I liked the over all aesthetic a little more than the x61, its an awesome cooler does the job very well and is whisper quiet.

MOTHERBOARD ASRock 797 extreme 6

Not too much to say, I wanted a high end Z97 board that suits my needs with extensive features a devilishly good looks.

RAM Corsair Dominator Platinum 16gb 1866mhz cas 9

Quite possibly the most overpriced Ram on the market, that said it looks awesome, and for me this build is all about great performance and looking good. Will be adding the light bar kits in the future.

STORAGE 250gb Samsung 850 Evo, 2 x 1tb Seagate Barracuda

Solid ssd with great performance that is reasonably priced, I will be adding an additional one in the future.

Pretty standard here Seagate being one the best on the market for Hdd's one drive for mass storage the other for backups.

GRAPHICS CARD Gigabyte GeForce GTX 980 G1-Gaming

Now this was tough, I was set on Nvidia but went back and forth between the 980 and 980 ti, ultimately I chose the 980 as the gaming I will be doing is at 1080p and along with a G-sync panel it was hard to justify the additional cost of the ti, I'm happy with my choice as it suits my needs.

CASE Fractal Design Define S

What an awesome case I cant get enough of it, Clean sleek lines with a large side panel window, unrestricted airflow across the Gpu, Motherboard from the front, as drives are stored in the back compartment, surprisingly large amount of space for cable management and all the Velcro straps provided, I plan on water cooling in the not so distant future so this case was a clear winner for me. The only complaint I have is that there is no dust filter included for the top.

POWER SUPPLY Corsair HX850i Platinum

Great tier one unit, with plenty of room for me to expand, the only thing was the price of the custom sleeved cables and the amount of shrink wrap on them, but I had to have them as they matches the colour scheme perfectly, when I water cool I plan to remove the shrink wrap just to tidy it up a little more.

FANS Corsair 120/140mm quiet addition

Mostly chosen for the aesthetic do the job, but i can see myself switching them out in the future.

MONITOR Acer XB240H ABPR 24.0"

I wanted a 1080p G-sync panel that didn't break the bank and 24" is plenty for me. Great monitor so smooth while gaming, colours took some tweaking as they appeared a little washed out to begin with. And as soon as I colour match some paint, I'll be spraying the red base ring blue.

I would like to say thanks to PCPP for being an amazing place to learn even more about PC Building and Components and exposing me to all the people that have helped out over the past few months in the forums with ideas and inspiration, you guys are awesome. Now to totally contradict the first line, this is just the beginning and by no means finished :)

Part Reviews

Does the job and does it well. no complaints

CPU Cooler

Great cooler one of the top performers and quiet to

Solid feature rich motherboard.

Great looking Ram little pricey for what it is

Video Card

Great GPU a real performer and one of the best looking.

Cannot get enough of this case in my opinion the best mid tower on the market.

Power Supply

Exactly what you expect from a tier one unit.

Cheap G-sync monitor great for gaming colour seemed a little washed out.

Decent keyboard for the price, cant complain

I like this mouse its just a little small for my hands.

Great headphones good quality sound, mic is ok, But they are especially useful as you can sync your phone to them so I don't miss calls while gaming.

Great build, nice blue color scheme.

Love the Define S, I've been thinking of doing a white themed hardline build in it.

Ok, so I really enjoy the blue colored theme of your build and I was wondering if you can answer a few of my questions about your pc. 1. Where did you buy your custom PC wire sleeves? 2. Is that power supply good enough to run some high end gaming? 3. What CPU fan would you recommend that can match water cooling?(I don't want to risk water getting near my $2000 machine) Thanks man. (Really my main question is about the wires as I want the awesome looking blue setting)

GAROLDonPC submitter 1 Build 1 point 43 months ago

The cables are straight from corsair, The power supply is one of the best available tier one with platinum efficiency and quiet mode where the fan stops spinning if not under load. there is very little risk with all in one liquid coolers it is all self contained so you never have to refill or even see the water, alternatively cryorig R1 Ultimate matches noctua's top coolers while being more neutral in colour.

http://www.corsair.com/en/professional-individually-sleeved-dc-cable-kit-type-3-generation-2-blue Does this seem to be the cables you were using from Corsair? And also one more question, How far can you push that graphics card? Can it run the likes of The Witcher 3 on max settings with hairworks on? Thanks once again.

GAROLDonPC submitter 1 Build 1 point 43 months ago

those are the exact cables, keep in mind that the 24 pin ATX cable is sold separately and they are cheaper on amazon, honestly couldnt tell you mate i dont play witcher but on Bf4 ultra i get 140+ Fps on ark survival at high/epic settings i get 80+ Fps without any Gpu overclock

Zboynatedog 1 point 43 months ago

Kinda sucks that it is seperate, but it shouldn't be too expensive. Also I just wanted a general idea of what your card can handle, so it is fine. Thanks for all your help!

Zboynatedog 1 point 43 months ago

Hey, I'm back for one more important question. Where did you exactly put your SP and AF fans? Would you recommend the SP fans going in the front area since that is where the HDD cages are and there is more pressure and the AF fans going elsewhere? So in all, 2 SP in the front, 3 AF on top, and 1 AF in the back.

Hey man nice build +1! I was wondering how your 980 is working out for you? I'm on the fence between the 980 and 980ti. Using the same monitor you have. Also sweet sleeves was it hard to get them on there?

GAROLDonPC submitter 1 Build 1 point 43 months ago

Thanks man, its great no problems, stays cool & gives great fps across the board, i had the same dilemma ultimately i went with the 980 as im gaming in 1080 and the ti's cost seemed hard to justify for 1080p

Axtun 1 point 43 months ago

About to get my build soon (this weekend).

The last part I lack is the monitor and I'm planning to get the XB240H too. Would like to know your opinion on it. And what sort of tweaking you did to the monitor to counter the washed out color issue?

GAROLDonPC submitter 1 Build 1 point 43 months ago

It's a great monitor, no complaints I use software that let's me tweak the vibrance.
