Description

1st a little background (sorry for the novel)... I am 26 and recently went back to school to get a degree in Cyber Security. Computers have always amazed me and always wanted to build one but I have not had the knowledge of how to. After creeping in Reddit I was lead to this site and saw multiple builds and videos. So I decided to sell my recently purchased MacBook Pro to help fund my build. While visiting friends in NJ one of them wanted to go to MicroCenter and buy some RAM for his Mac. I've never heard of MicroCenter let alone see one, and MY GOD! I felt like a kid at a candy store. Luckily for me They had a bundle sale for an i7 and a ASUS Maximus Hero MOB so i jumped on it (was broke after that because at this point my Laptop has not sold yet to fund my Shenanigans). . . and that's when it ALL started, It took me one VERY long night and I completed it on my Birthday!!

When I was in Middleschool I did some PC gaming with CS and Battlefield but over time that little Dell was not cutting it and I just played on PS or Xbox platforms. OHHHHH man am I glad I came back to PC gaming. I currently play BF4 and this thing handles like a charm. Ultra settings and never dips below 60fps (maybe even 70)

I wanted a PC that is future proof (for the most part) and can handle almost anything I throw at it. So far I am very satisfied.

WHY Carbon fiber? WHY NOT?! hahah I LOVE Carbon Fiber, I used to drive a 2003 EVO and had alot of Carbon Fiber goodies in it and it just felt right. The process once again was not all that difficult, just like my build YouTube was the key to success!

**I am open to any suggestions or criticism, keep in mind this is my first computer, I've actually never touched a internal PC component, however considering I'm going into the Computer field I might as well familiarize myself now. (Sorry for the long post, and the Mix in quality of pictures taken, some where taken with phone and others by a DSLR *

Looks absolutely amazing from what I can see! It looks very cool in your pictures as well. Congratulations!

I usually see more overkill graphics cards in builds like this, but I think the 970 is plenty powerful especially at 1080p. I have the same card and max settings on every game with at least 60 fps and I have yet to attempt to overclock it. You should have plenty of headroom on your PSU to overclock as well if you want to.

Additionally, if you are doing video editing at high resolutions, it may benefit you to get a second pair of Corsair Vengence.

Anyway, it looks amazing!

YES! I forgot to mention that my next purchase is additional RAM. I don't feel confident enough to overclock just yet, but its definitely happening at some point. Thanks for the comment.

If you do ever feel like overclocking is necessary, I recommend that you check out MSI Afterburner. It makes overclocking easy and is pretty reliable.

WILL DO! thanks for the suggestion

Changed case through the middle of the build?

  • 2 points

hahaha yes I did (good EYE) I went originally with the Cooler Master Storm Trooper case but it was so massive and bulky, and the NZXT was originally my 2nd option. I just went with it and am SUPER happy, especially since Carbon Fiber was easy to apply since its a flat rectangular case.

  • 3 points

I'm glad you made this switch. The H440 is just too sweet.

  • 1 point

Yeah I really like the carbon fiber. Just purchased a matte black for the build I'm about to finish. I was looking at your pics and though whats with the carbon fiber?

  • 1 point

yea I purchased it off Amazon. 3M do-luk (something like that)

  • 3 points

This is a beautiful red/black build. The LEDs really finish this. +1

  • 2 points

Thank you human! I was in a bin between red and white, but I fell RED LEDs would have been overkill. . . So I opted for the White NZXT LEDs which have a nice little button on the back you can press and POWWW they turn off. pretty nice feature.

  • 3 points

In the 2nd picture, you show a different case than the one that you actually used and you also have an ODD which I don't believe the H440 has a spot for. Did you return your original case or something?

I'm going to have to do something like this later on. I freaking love it man. I'm a carbon fiber junkie as well, it's everywhere on my 2016 WRX

  • 2 points

Wow such a nice build man :). Im kinda looking to build a similar pc soon, how is the Nzxt h440 im looking to build in that case.

  • 2 points

It depends, for the price it is far inferior to other options, most notably the phanteks enthoo pro. If you are building for looks go with the h440 but if you want literally 3 times better cooling and still a great looking case, go with the enthoo pro. Look up videos on the cases

  • 2 points

Thanks, i'll do it bit more research before i pull the trigger.

  • 1 point

DO IT! (Shia LeBeouf voice) its a fairly light case, easy to move around & sturdy. Has good dust filters which is a MUST. I move my PC to my girlfriends house on weekends and it's never a hassle. Also a HUGE selling point for me is the hidden PSU and wires which I LOVE! going from a nice big ol case (Cooler Master Storm Trooper) to this is a dream!

  • 2 points

Looks great but the parts are extremely questionable. 8gbs of ram, and a 970 with this mobo? This is like $150+ wasted on the motherboard. The 970 is just a bad buy, looks amazing however, maybe get 2 more ram sticks

  • 1 point

Yes, when doing the build Money started to dry so I could not get the additional RAM, but next on my list after Christmas is more RAM. Down the line I do want to look into the 980 hybrid, however that's in a year or 2.

  • 3 points

By the time you want more, the 980 hybrid will be obsolete, you can get something like a 1080 or whatever the next thing for nvidia is. Unless Intel does something drastic because of AMDs zen CPUs, that i7 will literally perform identical to processors in the future and not affect gaming

Those parts look good (that cpu cooler looks amazing!) but personally I'n now a HUGE fan of the H440. very pleasing to the eye, Wish they did make a front cover that had holes so it can breath better but it does okay (When heavy gaming I just take off the front panel and let my fans exposed. . .

I wanted your opinion on monitors

1) http://www.frys.com/product/8069054?site=sr:SEARCH:MAIN_RSLT_PG LG Ultrawide 34" 2560x1080 monitor $400

2) https://pcpartpicker.com/part/asus-monitor-pb287q ASUS 28" 4K 16:9 monitor $450

3) http://www.frys.com/product/8043744?site=sr:SEARCH:MAIN_RSLT_PG LG Ultrawide 29" 2560x1080 monitor $300

Or if you could recommend either a 4K monitor or an ultrawide for around $500

Thx

  • 1 point

Id go with option 1 or 2. I dont personally have a 4k monitor (other than my TV) so I havent researched them much but that 34 ultra wide would be a nice amount of real estate to get anything done and I can imagine would be sweet for gaming. but that ASUS is also a charm! cant go wrong with either one! Good luck! (I would highly suggest maybe Youtube reviews )

I'm so jealous I have searched and searched for that motherboard but, at the time I had bought mine everywhere was sold out or extremely pricey.

  • 1 point

YES! to be honest I wanted to sell this rig and build it again with the GPU that I want and other little changes but I refused only because I see the MOBs going for like 500+ which is insane. . . I got lucky and got the last on @ my MicroCenter (Maryland). I originally got the Hero VII with the i7 bundle but payed an extra 100 once I layed eyes on this bad boy.

very nice build, i'm looking to create a similar looking build but black/blue, how easy was it to apply the wrap? ain't wrapped anything before but if its anything like applying a screen protector for a phone, i'm doomed. I love the carbon fiber.

The ROG logo top right is a nice touch. :)

  • 1 point

I was just as worried as you but the nice thing about the wrap is you apply some heat and it bends easier than a drunken stripper at a 4th of July party in Colombia (don't tell my girlfriend hahahaha)but seriously. if you messed up, peel off, apply heat and apply again. super easy to work with ESPECIALLY with this case since its flat and has no crazy curves. to get detailed lime mine for the front and top panet, you do have to removes some screws and pend some metal tabs to remove the red plastic vents to apply the carbon fiber nice and clean but its super easy! highly suggest to do it!

Thanks man, The lights look really cool. Nice build by the way.

  • 2 points

Normally I don't like those colors for the keyboard; but by "sorting" them, you actually make it look really nice! Well done!

  • 1 point

Thank you, I was originally sold by all the cool colors this keyboard provides and the cool effects it makes when you press a key, however after a while it got old and annoying quick so I resorted to ALL while for the exception of important keys which I changed its color. Much more easy and appealing to the eye.

  • 2 points

Does it make typing easier?

  • 1 point

I usually explain it as it feeling somewhat like a typewriter. The keys are supper snappy and responsive, its almost like you know what key you are hitting. it is loud compared to your usual cheap keyboard but man o man does it fell nice. If there is a MicroCenter near you just walk in and try it out, they usually have one on display.

  • 1 point

Now, I meant the lighting. Both microcenters near me have a mechanical keyboard to try out

  • 2 points

Your pictures are very attractive with the lighting. You did a very nice build. I love it!

  • 2 points

Where did you buy your motherboard from?

  • 1 point

Probably from MicroCenter with the rest of the parts.

  • 1 point

Got the LAST ONE at my local MicroCenter! I purchased a i7/ ASUS Hero VII MOBO combo in NJ while visiting friends, I come back to MD and visit my local MicroCenter to purchase my monitor and while browsing the isle I saw that beauty with the lights shining down from the heavens above (not really, just a basic halogen bulb probably purchased wholesale from a Chinese manufacture) and luckly I had my MOBO in the trunk of the car (cause who brings down their newly purchased expensive PC parts down from the car? right?) and payed an extra $100 and walked out with the last one!

Must say very nice build sir, looks amazing and probably performs just as well. How's that monitor holding up with gaming? I was looking at the same monitor but wanted something with gsync at 144hz but am second guessing that decision, do you notice any tearing or other issues with it?

  • 1 point

No tearing issues what so over. I wanted to say I did see some people complain of this here and there with this monitor but overall its a very nice monitor.

LED's ruin it man. Should have gone with cold cathodes.

  • 1 point

hahaha I promise you when it has the case door on and you see it from the front view the glare isn't horrible as shown in most the images, however I do have the option to turn them off with a push of a button.

  • 1 point

Its just still uneven lighting compared to a cold cathode which gives even lighting. Look at the build on my page and you'll see what I mean. LED's will never give that kind of light.

  • 2 points

Mmmmm I love me some carbon fiber, did the same thing on my last build. Fantastic job for your first build, the interior lighting looks sick with those LEDs. +1 for sure.

The car had BAD JUJU! it was cursed! (seriously) too much crap non stop, clutch went out replaced (normal) got it out from show and on may way home got rear ended. . . back in shop, got new JDM rear and a week later hit and run (front end) got new Seibon CF hood and APR EVO IX front bumper and as the shop was test driving the car make sure theres no rattling or weird sounds BOOM hood flies open (back at the shop, as it really never even left).... got car back 2 months later as I'm driving home on i70, its super windy and BOOM guess what? hood was ripped right from the hood latch and slams right into the windshield (I think I **** my pants at this point). . . Went to the LubeCenter (mistake #1) and got an oil change, and well on my way home later that night I hear knocking. . . YUP! blown engine WHY YOU ASK? well numbnuts at the lube center forgot to tighten drain bolt. . . back in shop for like 1 month for engine rebuild (payed by them). . . and the list goes on . . . I sold it and a few months later the car was flooded in an area that never floods. . . THANKS OBAMA!

  • 1 point

GOD DAMMIT OBAMA! I think every Evo has bad juju though, I dont know a single owner who doesnt send their pay check directly to thier car because there is always something wrong with them! Last month alone I had to have the gearbox refurbished, on the way to H20i in October my ECU died... I swear if i didnt love that car so much I would probably have driven it off a cliff

  • 1 point

Good ol H2o! lol always a good time, but yes, I sold mine to stop the hard worked paycheck to be dumped into the car. Now thankfully I'm back in school which would have been hard with an EVO, considering its like having a needy angry wife that's sexy as **** but always threatens to leave your broke ***. . . but you know you cant let that happen cause it will be very hard to find a classy big booty hoe that gets you going when ever you want. . . so yea there's that. . .

Good luck with your degree!

  • 1 point

It is! but to be honest I could not get over the Armor it had, it was just amazing, its like one of those things you know you didn't need and would pay too much for but regardless what anyone told you, you still went and got it. . . lol but no worries I'll be getting the 980 Hybrid in 2016

  • 2 points

Gorgeous build, my friend. It's kind of funny, you have my keyboard, my mouse, the PSU I'm planning on upgrading to, the GPU I'm planning to upgrade to, and the same model of SSD that I have in my build, lol.

  • 1 point

Why do you want a 970?

  • 1 point

Little late on the reply, but hey, better late than never, right?

I suppose I should say that at this point in the game, I don't really want a 970, but rather whatever its Pascal-based successor is (assuming decent pricing). Ideally, I'd pick up a 980 Ti and call it good, but since I don't have the money for something like that, and only have a 1080p monitor, it doesn't really seem like a smart buy imo.

that's awesome! its one hell of a build. Some say over kill, some say not enough. . . lol

Dude, this looks great! One question though, what are yoir thoughts on the M65 mouse? I'm to start ordering my parts, but I'm stuck on a few choices, one of those being a mouse. I want matching peripherals, as I'm also going with the K70 RGB, but I'm unsure on the M65 and was looking at the Razer Mamba Chroma instead!

  • 1 point

i LOVE IT, JUST AS THE k70 IT HAS A TON OF CUSTOMIZATION (sorry for the CAPS) I personally love it but then again I havent tried the Chroma. I made my decision based off YouTube reviews. Maybe search a M65 vs Chroma?

hahaha yes. I figured living next to DC that may be the smarter choice in career that I will enjoy and is in HIGH demand with few people to fill it. . . and there's nothing that beats an R34! NOTHING I TELL YOU!

I ******* HATE IT! Its the one item I wish I would have never purchased, It disconnects all the time, I hear my voice in Delay, I've tried everything found on forums and NOTHING! I just use my Turtle Beach Tango instead and they work flawlessly

WHERE DO I GET A CARBON FIBER NZXT H440!!! I NEED ONE NOW!!!

  • 1 point

you dont! hahaha get a regular H440 that catches your eye. go on AMAZON or EBAY and buy 3M Carbon Fiber Wrap. Besides that make sure you have an pencil to draw out your measurement, an exacto knife to cut out the CF, and finally a heat gun to apply the CF AND BOOM!

hahahaha for a second there I seriously thought it was a rule! but thank you so much. Honestly anyone can do this. I had 0 experience at the start of 2015 and in May built this amazing machine. GO FOR IT!

but as far as the background... only a few people can handle its glory. To be safe make sure your in a room alone and have some fresh towels to clean the mess that will be eminent. . . cause napkins or bounty will just not do the job. . . http://www.speedhunters.com/2014/09/gtr-for-the-street-and-track-by-nismo/

ENJOY!
