This is Betty, my personal lockdown build for 2020. It's a personal build for me and my first almost scratch build. For those of you who have been following along with my build log at 80ishplus on instagram or my occasional post here you'll know that it's a makerbeam frame inside a Smeg toaster.
It's carrying an ASUS x570 itx motherboard and a EVGA RTX 2080ti.
This build is supposed to reflect a mid century modern aesthetic, and the composition of materials I have chosen are reflective of themes of the age. Minimal plastic, enamelled steel and the interpolation of big industry into the domestic realm.
I have always had a soft spot for SMEG (Smalterie Metallurgiche Emiliane Guastalla) a post World War 2 Italian enamel works that reinvented itself during the 50's from enamelling into an appliance making giant.
When I was 5 years old, a grandfatherly family friend who had fought in the war as an Australian Air Dispatcher used to spend time with me teaching me chess after school while my parents were busy. I used to get ice out of his Smeg fridge, which even back then was ancient and looked completely different to contemporary fridges. Now, every time I see a Smeg fridge or appliance it reminds me of him. He's long passed on but I still love Smeg.
So this build is a lot of things that I like. It has one foot in the past but has blistering capable technology in it. It also reminds us that computers aren't just for the work place any more, they are a domestic appliance and part of the home. I hope I've captured the appropriate blend of warmth and functionality that this build was supposed to embody.
