Description

First of all i'd like to say this is my first ever custom PC build for myself and i could not be happier! This particular project has been probably 6 months in the making but it was soooo worth it! Anyhow i thought the black and white aesthetic was by far the cleanest and most modern of any other and although the build is most definitely overkill for what i do right now (light gaming and editing) , i figure that could change if i go to school or take on other projects in the future. I'm posting this almost a month after completion and its been an extremely smooth experience thus far which is not at all what i expected but maybe i'm just lucky. Anyhow Thank you all for taking time to check out my build and if you have any questions feel free to ask.

P.S. I would just like to say that i would give all parts in this PC a 5 star rating performance wise however if you take into account the extra price i payed for my color scheme you could do much better for your money. The machine is much quieter than my old store bought computer which is not saying much, and my only gripe is the fact that you're supposed to use corsair link software with the h100i V2 and that there is no integrated wifi in this mobo however that's a very easy and cheap fix. Lastly the s340 elite is a beatiful looking case (photos don't do it justice) and a dream to work in! Thanks again!

... and yes thats me shamelessly showing off the custom wallpaper i made for myself haha.

Desk Edit: I figured i would do a little bit on my desk considering it seems to draw as much attention as my PC. i'll admit i got a lot of my inspiration for my desk from a youtuber by the name of randomfrankp. as soon as he did a room tour featuring this desk I've been obsessing over it. It is a combination of two white Alex drawers ($80 CDN each) and a 72" Karbly counter top ($170 CDN) both from IKEA. I then purchased 8 BQLZR Stainless Steel Kitchen Adjustable Feet Round Furniture Legs from amazon.ca and secured them with some half inch wood screws to the Alex drawers. overall this desk is as sturdy and can be and does not want to budge once put in place, i mean the counter top alone is like 50 + pounds and its not even solid wood! overall i would recommend this custom desk arrangement to anyone looking to add a bit of personality to their setup especially considering the variety of colors and finishes you can get for these products e.g. black Alex drawers with a white counter top etc. For about $350 CDN it's more expensive than most pre-built desks but the end result is also far superior than what you would otherwise pay for. Plus with how convenient it is to install the little cable management rack underneath (signum rack from IKEA $15 CDN) you just can't go wrong. Fianlly i made the decision to drill a hole through the center of the desk using a 3/4" spade bit so that i could cleanly route my mouse and keyboard cables and give off the illusion of wireless peripherals. Although do this at your own risk because it obviously voids the warranty if something goes wrong and you only get one chance so be cautious!

Thank you for reading and i'm loving how well everyone is receiving my first build guide, stay tuned for more edits!

Part Reviews

CPU

extremely fast and overclockable, slightly overpriced but worth it if you need the power!

CPU Cooler

great cooler, quiet if you swap out stock fans and keeps my pc ice cold. Only gripe is needing to use corsair link and that darned usb cable coming out of the pump. i would actually suggest going for nzxt's new x52 instead though!

Motherboard

fantastic motherboard for the price and a nice matte black finish. Has a great layout and all the features you expect. Also has a great and easy to understand bios, i just wish it supported sata m.2 and had built in wifi.

Memory

Best looking ram i have ever seen and solid aluminim construction. These are amazing but expensive!

Storage

One of the most reliable SSD's on the market with great speeds and a clean look all at a reasonable price, but i probably didn't even have to tell you with how popular this thing is.

Storage

it's a hard drive folks not much to it. reliable mass storage for cheap and has a ton of good reviews.

Video Card

This thing is a powerhouse! Capable blowing all AAA titles out of the water at 1080P and 1440P. And although i haven't done anything at 4K believe me when i say it can handle that very well too! Basically Titan performance at half the cost! Bonus is it runs cool and quiet as the fans don't even spin until the temps exceed 60 degrees Celsius.

Case

A gorgeous case at a competitive price considering it has full tempered glass panel and not acrylic or plastic. an absolute dream to work in with ample space for ATX motherboards and the built in cable management bar does a great job at hiding unsightly cables. i personally love the ssd mount on the front and the back has built in cable clips, tie down points and plenty of options cut out wise for cable management. Did i mention it has thumbscrews and pre- installed standoffs!

Power Supply

EVGA makes some really solid power supply's I've never met anyone who's had a problem with them and they have a 7 year warranty so it will probably outlive your PC anyhow. comes with all black cables and Eco mode keeps it silent while saving power. (only spins fan when necessary).

Case Fan

Air flow fans for the rear and top exhaust of my build they look great and its nice that they include red, blue, and white interchangeable rings. they move a good amount of air, are relatively quiet and didn't cost much. i'm sure there's better out there cough cough Noctua but they come at a cost and don't quite look as nice. oh yeah they are not pwm either.

Case Fan

expensive but now i can say my fans are floating on magnets which is cool. they are capable of moving a ton of air and have great static pressure while remaining very quiet during operation. Very good all-rounders. Supposedly have a longer life span then most other fans due to the mag-lev technology as well but i cant prove that.

Can you add a section commenting on your desk set-up?

Thank you kindly i suppose i could add a little segment but for now i can tell you that the desk is a combination of two white Alex drawers from IKEA with a 72" Karlby kitchen counter top from IKEA as well resting on 8 BQLZR Stainless Steel Kitchen Adjustable Feet Round Furniture Legs from amazon.ca! The desk is solid as can be and looks even better in person!

Your absolutely right i fell in love with what he did in his most recent setup tour and definitely took a lot of inspiration from him. I contemplated several different color combinations but in the end nothing looked quite as good as white and wood in my opinion.

I will probably do something similar. I just recently bought a glass desk that isn't the sturdiest so I may do something like this but use my glass top for the desktop.

i have a question, where did you get that white led strip

  • 1 point

the one on my desk is called the ALED LIGHT Led Strip 5M/16.4FT 300 SMD 3528 RGB. and i picked it up from amazon.ca however if you cant find it just grab whatever one has the highest reviews they are all very similar and as long as you get enough length you should get a very similar result for under $30 CDN. Or if you mean the one in my pc, it is the white magnetic 60cm widebeam led light strip from CableMod for $20CDN.

  • 1 point

Awesome and clean build. +1 no doubt. How do you like your case so far? Hows the air flow?

  • 1 point

The case improves upon its highly rated little brother and let me tell you the $$$ premium is definitely worth it. It is a dream to work in with plenty of space, cut-outs, tie down posts, and even some convenient cable clips at the back to clamp down and route multiple cables at once! Add on the pre installed standoffs and abundance of thumbscrews and you've got in my opinion one of the best cases on the market right now and an excellent choice for beginners! As far as airflow goes it does very well, consistently low temperatures and relatively silent i recommend setting the 2 front fans to intake and the top and rear fans to exhaust and you should be set.

  • 1 point

Excellent to hear. Thank you friend. Would you recommend it over the phanteks glass enthoo atx case?

  • 2 points

I can't honestly say because i've never worked in one but i have heard plenty so let me give you a quick run down of my opinion. They are both unbelievably well built / designed cases but i do believe the phanteks case may be the better of the two due to some fine details. For one i believe most if not all cut-outs are grommeted which i suppose is unnecessary but still nice to have. Second, they incorporate a very nice RGB hub next to the aux port on the front panel that can switch the color of the power button as well as any connected led strips at the touch of a button. Lastly i personally just prefer the overall look of the enthoo case and think having the usb / mic / headphone ports on the front of the case rather than the top like the s340 elite is a smarter decision. keep in mind though you will have a harder time keeping the build looking clean simply because both sides of the phanteks case are glass which means your cable management better be on point plus it is lacking any sort of feature such as the elites steel bar which helps immensely when dealing with your bigger 24 pin connector and usb 3.0. All in all if your willing to pay the roughly $80 premium and are confident in your cable management skills go for the phanteks case, however if you want an easy experience, a minimalistic look, and are tight on cash you simply cant go wrong with the elite. here is a great review of the phanteks case if you want a second opinion: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fQfRDSGlNqI

i got them from the fine folks at CableMod here is a link to thier product page: https://store.cablemod.com/products/ keep in mind they have different cables for different power supplies e.g. - i have their E series cables because i have a evga power supply it differs for corsair and seasonic etc.

Super clean well done! +1 Do you worry that the air coming off the radiator is filling your case with hot air only and its being pulled over your cpu + gpu by your exhaust fans?

  • 1 point

Thank you! I suppose in extended tasks that are very demanding such as rendering a large file this may cause some concern but at the moment my temperatures almost never exceed 60C (cpu + gpu). That being said i did upgrade the stock fans in my h100i to the more powerful corsair ml 120's so that may help. Also i wanted to maintain neutral air pressure in the case so i decided to stick with a 2 intake 2 exhaust layout.

  • 1 point

Nice build!

How noisy can it get with the 100i during load? I don't wear my headset all the time, so it would be nice to know if the noice is bearable or not :D

  • 1 point

Thanks! With stock fans in it can get quite loud, however i swapped out the stock fans for corsair ml 120 which are somewhat quieter plus i use corsair link and have my profile set to balanced so 90% of the time its just a slight hum that you can pretty much ignore. That being said almost all fans/coolers are audible under load and if your not hearing the fan you will be hearing the air they are moving.

  • 1 point

Thanks for the reply! Enjoy ur build :)

  • 1 point

do you think it is better to put the radiator fans like you did or the other way around?

  • 1 point

Honestly the performance difference you would be looking at is very minimal no matter which way you do it ( 5C at the most). However i did it this way mostly because i don't like the look of fans on top of the radiator and i wanted to hide them.

Absolutely wicked build bro, could I ask where you got the 1070 backplate from? Wanna get the same card, but I really wanna get backplate for it, is the one you got on now a full on backplate?

  • 1 point

Thanks for the kind words! i got my backplate from the guys at v1tech, here is a link: http://www.v1tech.com/

It is a blank matte black backplate that rests securely on top of your gpu via magnets that align with the circuit board. there is a small cutout though in the event you want to sli or crossfire and this particular backplate cost me 25$ USD plus shipping.

  • 1 point

Thanks heaps!

  • 1 point

Is that a custom backplate? I've looked all over and everywhere else seen says the armor 1070 doesn't come with one

  • 1 point

yes it's "custom"... i ordered this blank matte black one from the guys at v1tech here is a link if you're interested: http://www.v1tech.com/product-category/backplates/all-backplates/ and just to confirm, this model of the 1070 does not come with any backplate at all.

Just wondering how the depth of the IKEA Karbly is? Seeing as it is only 63cm.

  • 2 points

Thanks for the kind words! Honestly for what i do and the items i own, it is spacious enough to hold everything i could want with the exception of large external speakers and possibly an excessively big tower case, however seeing as i use a headset and a mid size tower it is not a problem for me. i suppose i could ditch the bonsai and a few other nik-nacks to make room for speakers but its all up to you. Also i'm not 100% sure on this but i believe you can get custom slabs of counter top cut at IKEA for not all that much more. Just remember to measure everything ahead of time to save yourself a headache!

  • 1 point

Thanks for the reply! I will definitely have to look into seeing if they do that in our IKEA in Australia, but I have a similar rig to yours so I think it would be all good then, but will measure up for sure, also planning to buy a desk frame so I can use this slab in a sit/stand configuration.

Cheers! :)

  • 2 points

Happy to help! A sit/stand would be a great idea, i wanted to do one myself but unfortunately it never made it to the final setup. A word of advice though, make sure all your cords have enough slack so that raising and lowering the desk doesn't cause tension or even the unplugging of any of your cables.

This is exactly the desk I was thinking about getting. How stable is the Karlby? And is it attached to the legs or is it just sitting on them? Because I know you said you drilled the little legs into the Alex Drawers.

  • 1 point

Karlby is as stable as it gets, very heavy like 100 pound slab probably. it is not attached to anything. you are correct the legs are drilled to the white alex drawers. However those same legs have a nice rubber topper on them which provides extremely good grip so the counter doesn't budge.
