good build.

only thing i would do different is a aftermarket 1080

But with his SLI configuration being stack right on top each other, reference coolers that exhaust out of the case vs in the case, like aftermarket coolers, will cool better.

Yes that is way i did it.. The reference cooler are best for SLI

Exactly! Thats why I stuck with reference coolers when I upgraded to 1080s. Everyone assumes the aftermarket coolers are always better but they are terrible for SLI, I def know from experience. Reference or water cooled is best for SLI

Sure it will exhaust better. BUT they both still cool way worse than aftermarket coolers in SLI. For me, I'd sacrifice hot air hitting my motherboard over GPUs getting too hot.

But the hot air coming off the bottom card will make the top run hot, it has little affect on the motherboard. I had 980 Ti SLI with EVGA ACX 2.0 for a short time and my top card would hit 85C and bottom in the low 60s, and my Air 240 case has great airflow. I exchanged for two reference 980 Tis and top card usually stayed only 5C hotter than the bottom card. But that is just my experience, perhaps others have had better luck with aftermarket coolers in SLI with no slots between them.

Oh and great build to the OP btw! I'd love to know how the 6900k is working for you.

6900k works like a dream. I have ton of programs open and didn't even blink (oh and this is before the overclock lol).. I plan to overclock it to about 3.9 or 4.0 soon..

You are exactly right. I experienced the same in my previous build which is why i went with the reference or founders edition. Both cards stay much cooler.

I've never understood why they don't close up the shrouds of aftermarket coolers and have them exhaust out the back to? It must be more complicated than I think.

What was the temps on the reference 980 tis? I am thinking of having multiple cards too and that is the reason I am leaning to go with reference style vs open air.

With really good airflow, typically 65C on the bottom and 70C on the top. If it was really being pushed, the top would get in the mid to high 70s

TechyinAZ what GPU`s do you have?

Geforce GTX 750 Ti FTW from EVGA.

That case has never appealed to me. Aside from that amazing build. That CPU though o:

space the gpus further apart! The top one is suffocating!

Nice build otherwise btw.

Are you using an old SLI bridge or new HB SLI bridge?

Hey how is the mouse?

The Mouse is Dope! Just take the time to reprogram all the buttons.

Great build!

Have you overclocked it? I am curious as to why you chose the 6900k over the 5960x, its newer yes, but the 5960x overclocks better.

  • 1 point

I am gonna overclock it yes, but it wont be an extreme one. If your building a new rig and why not go with the new chipset? From all the tests i saw the 6900k is faster than the older 5960k.. Plus the difference was like 30 bucks.. Just made more sense.. Now if your into extreme overclocking go with the 5960x..

What are the temps on those sandwhiched together GPU's?

Can I just ask, (i'm a really newbie builder here) isn't there supposed to be 2 docks for ssds? How'd you fit 4

LOVE your build. One minor question that I am unsure of. Would it be better to get the 3 slot SLI bridge for spacing between the cards or no?

i would have gone for 2 sea hawks in sli
