Description
Thank You Pcpartpicker.com - I wouldn't have been able to complete this build without this website.
I own and coordinate a motorsports coordination company here on the east coast and wanted to build a rig that would allow me to use VR for drifting simulation and that could also multitask other games for my wife and I to play + become my main computer for work. I currently use a 2015 Macbook pro that has treated me well but does have issues running some website creation tools so it was time to upgrade. I will breakdown my uses and individual part reviews and build reviews below.
What do i use this computer for: Assetto Corsa VR drifting (wanted to build a rig that would allow me to drift cars at the venues that I host events at in order to demo new course layouts + get on course seat time during this off-season. Will also be playing other games such as Tomb Raider, Monster Hunters, and some old school games such as Kings Quest, Roller Coaster Tycoon, Monkey Island and some other classics. Lastly, I will be using this computer for work (website building, document storage, content creation, light video editing) etc.
What types of computers have i used in the past: Until about a month ago i had almost 0 knowledge when it came to building computers, gaming on computers etc. Pcpartpicker.com really helped me learn and their comparability part list builder was absolutely key to my comp build. I came from Mac - currently i have a 2015 Macbook pro and a 2009 mac desktop. My last windows computer was in 2007 and was an Asus best buy special that had trouble running StarCraft.
Build process: The build was fun! At first i was nervous about breaking things but as soon as i get the build started it flowed nicely. All in all it took me about 5 hours to put it together and another 5 hours to load windows 10 on it lol. Creating a boot file from a Macbook served to be a very troublesome process. I ended up having a buddy remote into my mac and create the boot file which ended up not working. He eventually created the boot file on his computer - uploaded it to google drive and then we were able to save it on to the USB from there. It was a process. Once we got windows 10 installed everything was easy! Updated all my drives and we were good to go.
Any issues?: Other then windows 10 boot file causing me issues i did have one other problem. Once the comp was built and running well i couldn't control the RGB lights on the fan cooler that came with the 2700x. After doing some reading online i thought that i had the cooler plugged into the wrong slot for RGB fan control so i moved it from the CPU Fan plug to the JRGB2 slot (I'm pretty sure that this is what its labeled. I will confirm later tonight.) that was right above it - once i turned the comp on some smoke came from the cooler and that was it - didn't work anymore. So i rushed out to best buy and bought the corsair liquid cooler. Overall i am happy with the Corsair and i think in the end i was going to need more cooling as VR really takes a lot of computing power. I got the corsair all hooked up in under and hour - powered it back up and everything works great! BTW - when i went to remove the old CPU cooler my CPU was stuck to it! i had to use a hairdryer to loosen the thermal paste to get the CPU off and then had to re-seat it. Very stressful process but ultimately very easy.
Lastly - the desk setup and desk wire management is all temporary. I will be using Ikea Countertops to create a custom L desk in the space that i have. Also, i will be picking up a seat rig from RSeat.net in the next few weeks.
Part Reviews
CPU
Really impressed - Runs super fast (seen upwards of 4.1 from this with no overclocking) - Install was seamless.
CPU Cooler
Easy to install - Looks great - and works great. CPU at idle is typically around 30-35c and under full VR load we are around 60c. Playing Doom with full ultra settings at 144fps temps didn't go over 66c. Great cooler! Highly recommended
Motherboard
Bios is very easy to navigate and use. Driver software is great and RGB lights are perfect. Looks greats - works great - no complaints
Memory
Great ram - was able to get it on sale on black Friday for $134. Had to OC it in BIOS to get it at 3200. Very Fast - Looks awesome ++++
Storage
Extremely fast - very small - very easy to install. A+++
Video Card
Bought this new from NewEgg for $365 as I was able to double it up with discounts with purchasing it trough Ebay. It was on sale for $429 from NewEgg and they posted the sale on Ebay and Ebay was running a %15 off coupon. This card is huge and weighs a ton. Getting a support bracket for it is almost mandatory. I ordered a $15 bracket off of amazon that supports it great. This card pushes VR Asetto Corsa with 0 issues - i have been able to run Doom in Ultra Settigns at 144fps 1080p and there are zero issues. RGB colors looks awesome - it stays super cool - A+++
Case
A little bit smaller then what i had expected but overall the case is great. Limited fan options FYI - It can only fit two fans vertically (see where i mounted my cooler). It does look great though, has great cable management and everything screwed in perfectly.
Power Supply
Works great - no voltage issues - easy to mount
Wireless Network Adapter
My mobo doesn't have WiFi so i purchased this. It was cheap and it works great! No connection issues and it worked instantly.
Case Fan
These fans work great and look great. The color options are endless and they mount extremely easy.
Monitor
This monitor is a really good value. I impulse bought it on Cyber Monday from BHphoto for $396 shipped. I wanted a large curved monitor vs two monitors as i'm not a fan of having a bezel in between my usable screen spaces. The 34inch monitor is super immersive - gaming is excellent - multitasking is excellent. The colors come through very well. My screen does have a little bit of bleeding however its a bit expected on these wide curved monitors. I am happy with my purchase considering the alternative to this monitor is hundreds of dollars more . I would have loved a 1440 but i just couldnt't justify the cost with having already spent so much on my PC build. The 1080 looks great though. My only real negative comment other then the screen bleed is that this monitor has a lot of glare. My setup is in a finished basement with standard basement lighting and i get a ton of glare. It could be my settings but with the 1080 its a bit expected.
Custom
They look good but are very flimsy. Using a comb is almost mandatory. Will probably replace them in the near future.
