Description

I've been running my Oculus Rift from my Acer Predator Helios 300 laptop for a while now. She did good for the time, however, with a spare GTX 1070 in my inventory, I figured it was time to give my laptop a rest from VR and build an actual desktop dedicated to VR.

I bought the CPU and Motherboard as a combo deal from Newegg for $229. The MSI GeForce GTX 1070 was a gift from a friend after they upgraded their computer to a new RTX 2080. Everything else I had sitting on the shelf collecting dust. All prices I've listed reflect what I paid for them when I bought them... you could probably build this rig much cheaper now if you had to buy all the parts at today's prices.

I had to modify the case and mount the video card horizontally in the lower compartment, just above the CPU cooler. Yes, I know this is not ideal, however there is plenty of space between the GPU and CPU and enough airflow through the case that heat is not an issue.

She's up and running VR just fine. As soon as I get the chance I'll be running some benchmarks (Cinebench, Heaven, 3DMark (Time Spy), and VRMark. When I've got the data, I'll update this post.

Benchmarks

I consider these results to be as "real-world" as possible -- Yes, I know benchmarking is synthetic... what I mean is that I ran them in a normal working environment. (i.e. They were not run in a stripped down version of Windows, no settings were tweaked specifically for testing, blah blah blah...) I ran them exactly how my machine runs normally... just as if I was going to play any of my VR games.

CINEBENCH:

  • OpenGL - 115.14 fps
  • CPU - 1302 cb

Heaven (Extreme)

  • FPS - 137.1
  • Score - 3454
  • Min FPS - 9.3
  • Max FPS - 281.1

3DMark - Time Spy Results

  • Score - 6045
  • Graphics Score - 6049
  • CPU Score - 6025

VRMark - Orange Room Results

  • Score - 8866
  • Average Frame Rate - 193.28 fps
  • Target Frame Rate - 109.00 fps

VRMark - Blue Room Results

  • Score - 1832
  • Average Frame Rate - 39.94 fps
  • Target Frame Rate - 109.00 fps

The case is so mid-2000s and ugly, I absolutely adore it!

I'd love to build in it, looks like a straight forward layout to work in.

Thanks. I like it too. I bought it back in the mid-2000's, so... LOL.

I tried to use it in probably 4 different builds, but it just didn't work out. Honestly, I don't know why I even kept it this long. I should have thrown it out years ago. I'm now glad I didn't because it's perfect for this VR build.

As for working inside of it, it's actually really nice having everything open and accessible. Routing the cables between the upper and lower decks can be a task, but nothing crazy.

As for the modding, it was really nothing more than cutting the opening in the back of the case and then flipping a bracket designed for supporting a 3.5" floppy drive. The bracket just happened to be at the right height and length to become a support bracket for the GPU. Honestly, there was no planning involved here... I just dry-fitted the parts and made adjustments as I went along. Worst case, I would just end up throwing the case out. I'm pretty glad it worked out in the end because for whatever reason, I really like this case. LOL

Not exactly sure what you are talking about...

Motherboard BIOS was set to optimized defaults and left alone, so everything is basically stock with only a few Windows optimizations applied.
