Part Reviews

CPU

Sometimes I dedect strange 7700K cpu temp spikes ... "hearable" when nearly idle ?!? The cpu temp jumps not often but frequent for a very short time (<1s) from 32° to ~ 64°C so that also the cpu fan speeds up for a short time (<3s). This is very annoing. I was forced to adjust the cpu fan speed ramp so that not every silly temp spike will be hearable.

CPU Cooler

+/- fan is not as quiet as I hoped at lower speed

-- Corresponding setup manual is horrible / but I have found some good YouTube videos so that I was able to setup the cooler on my motherboard.

Motherboard

++ micro-ATX form factor ( 24.4 cm x 24.4 cm )

++ two M.2 slots

++ on board Wifi

++ Asus EZ tuning wizard

-- Asus AI suite 3 software -> at the first look the frontend looks nice but when you go in deep you will be disappointed -> e.g. the Fan Xpert 4 software looses the fan setup from time to time -> take a look at the Asus forum and you'll see that there are many troubles reported with that bad software

-- Asus sonic studio 3 software for on board sound solution -> when using the optical S/PDIF connector the sonic device routing software feature will not work -> when using the HDMI connector my 5.1 AVR will be dedected correctly as 5.1 device but sonic studio 3 effects can not be used => Now I have uninstalled corresponding useless Asus software

=> I'm deeply disappointed by the Asus AI suite & Sonic Studio software. I was dazzled by the Asus marketing / product website ...

Update Feb 2018:

Asus Fan Xpert 4 software still looses fan settings from time to time ... the last / newest Asus Ai Suite 3.00.13 update hasn't fixed this problem ... no bugfix since the last 12 months ... Asus Fan Xpert 4 software = scrap.

Video Card

Powerful and not too loud video card for using a 2560x1440 g-sync gaming monitor

Attention: this video card needs 3 slots space

Case

++ Fantastic mATX case with good cable management

++ LxWxH 41 x 21 x 41 cm

+- Included Fractal Design Dynamic X2 GP-12 fans are not as quiet as I hoped. (Have replaced one at the front by two 140mm fans and in the meantime I have also replaced the 120mm fan in the back)

Power Supply

Good power supply with black sleeved cables and not hearable / ZERO noise.

Monitor

Good 27" IPS 2560x1440 Monitor

with (for me insignificant) backlight bleeding.

In relation to the price the OSD menu is very bad and also the build-in speakers.

Keyboard

++ compact keyboard / I do not need a numpad

+/- "different" key legend

-- for dimming the green razer logo a little razer software tool is necessary

-- Razer Synapse software registration necessary

The cooler on that card is massive!

I really like the look of that GPU and CPU cooler! Gives it a very clean look, and I'm sure you can reach the slider/tab if you come at it sideways with a screwdriver. +1

It was tricky but on the end I was able to reach the slider, so that I was able to remove the video card for adding a 2nd SSD.

Dilemma between choosing Motherboard for Define Mini-C, i wonder how much can you push for overclocking using that cooler :) But this case is really spacious compare to Nano-S. But sadly I wan to have a black and red theme but can't find any black and red theme mAtx motherboard.

Your issue with the S/PDIF optical connection not recognizing your receiver is a limitation of the S/PDIF standard, and not the motherboard. It was designed to carry uncompressed 2 channel audio, or compressed 5.1/7.1 channel surround. Unlike HDMI, it only transmits data, which is why it doesn't recognize the receiver as multichannel capable. You may be able to select Dolby Digital or DTS multichannel audio in the output settings, but it will be compressed. You won't get HD Audio surround from it. HDMI was designed to handshake between components, and it has far higher bandwidth.

I agree that the issue with the S/PDIF optical connection is a limitation of the S/PDIF standard and not a motherboard problem. I have not known this before I bought the motherboard. Unfortunately the on board sound solution including the Asus Sonic studio software is totally useless in my case.

Wow - the inability to use all 4 memory slots is a big thing. I am annoyed at the Razer software as well. For the money, on-board profile saving would be nice, but i know they want everyone hooked into their marketing :P

How much clearance from the GPU do you get? I just tried a Cryorig R1 Universal and it ended up putting pressure on the GPU's backplate.

rennseppl submitter 1 Build 1 point 20 months ago

Have uploaded a additional picture. Between the GPU backplate and the CPU cooler is ~ 2mm space.

How's the monitor holding up?

rennseppl submitter 1 Build 1 point 16 months ago

I'm still happy with it
