Build

Zero Suit Samus - Lian Li 1080 TI Wall Mounted Build

by Aphrenedge

Description

Update: I recently completed a custom loop for this build, you can find the build update here: https://uk.pcpartpicker.com/b/DbKBD3

Thank you PCPP for the feature! As someone who checks out builds here on a daily basis it's nice to be able to contribute to the collection of awesome builds. Keep up the great work, the interwebs wouldn't be the same without you!

I started this build about 6 months ago and I've finally got to a point at which I'm happy to post it on here. The build is inspired by some other great builds I've seen on this site. It's based on Zero Samus from the Metroid games which I use to love and my go to character on smash bros... rip GameCube. I hope you enjoy the photos!

A note on the case:

The following write up is mostly for people looking to build in this case to give them a decent idea of problems they may run into since it's 90% style/build quality over easy of access/convenience.

If you're looking into this case I'm sure you've heard it's hard to build in and I can only agree. I hope you enjoy cable management and undoing screws because you'll be at it for several hours. Getting a decent end result does require some planning but it's worth it.

Detailed build process:

Here I'll go through each component in the order that I'd recommend installing them. In each case I'll detail any problems I encountered along the way.

3.5" Hard Drives / SSDs / HUE+:

  • I placed both 3.5" HDDs in the front drive cage and left the mounting positions behind the gpu for my SSDs.
  • The main Issue with these was plugging in the power cables with so little clearance between the top of the drives and my PSU. I had to mount my PSU at the lowest point to get decent clearance for my AIO tubes. I'd recommend installing the drive cage back into the case and then plugging in any connections afterwards.
  • You can install various combinations of drives between 6 HDDs + 1 SSD and 2 HDDs + 5 SSDs assuming you are using the PCI-E slot, if not you can get another 2 drives on top of those. I found this pretty impressive for a case of this nature.
  • I've actually got 2 HUE+ boxes in this build, 1 in the slim cd drive bay and 1 at the back of the drive bay in the front bay. This only leavers me with 1 drive slot left which I'll be using for another ssd eventually.

GPU:

Picked up a 1080 TI about 2 weeks ago and decided to go for the founders since none of the announced aftermarket cards (<290mm) were really appealing to my tastes. I was considering an evga ftw2 or 3 card but since air flow in this case is hardly amazing I pulled the trigger on the FE card and don't regret it... it's a beast! I've also got the option to water cool easily with the FE but maybe after my wallet recovers.

The only down side to the FE card is the fans don't stop at idle. It's very quite any way and I rarely even notice it them at idle but if you are coming from a dead silence (fan stop) GPU it's something to keep in mind.

I terms of the actual volume and temps compared to my previous 980 TI they pretty much the same. Usually about 68-72 degrees with the in take fans and GPU fans between about 60-75% both set to monitor GPU temps.

My Current clocks:

  • 2000mhz (+140 on core clock - this is the value after temps and gpu boost have settled)
  • +150mhz on the memory clock
  • +120% power limit

I doubt I'll push the core any further but I need to work on the memory clock when I get some time.

Software:

  • Nzxt CAM - I've had issues with profiles resetting or the huye boxes switching but most of them were cleared up when I stopped logging in and used guest login instead.#
  • Corsair Utility Engineer - I have very mixed feelings about this software. I theory it's great but my overal experience when it comes to drivers an
  • MSi afterburner/riva for overclocking, fan curves and monitoring

Motherboard:

Not much to say here really, it's a fantastic motherboard.

  • Plenty of presets for lazy overclockers
  • USB Type C fast charge port is really handy

Almost forgot to mention the on-board sound is amazing, I really wasn't expecting it to be so good.

PSU:

  • There are 3 mounting points for the PSU. The lowest works fine for up to 170mm PSUs and should give you more space for an AIO cooler.
  • Consider getting a right angle kettle plug about 2.5-3m long for better rad clearance if you're using one. Keep in mind you lose about 0.5m of PSU cable routing it round the back of the case.
  • You will also need to detach the back plate on the case to pass the plug through the 2 holes provided.

CPU + AIO NZXT Kraken x52:

This was probably the hardest bit of the build. I wanted 3 fans running along the top so the only positioning that was actually possible is shown in the pictures (with the 240mm rad on the far right of the case). I used a couple of cable ties and extra screws to attach the 3rd fan on the far right.

  • There are 27-31 screws involved in removing the top of the case and mounting the rad/fans. It really is the most tedious part of the build.

Once happy with the rad/top of the case I installed the CPU & pump.

A few points to take note of:

  • Keep in mind if you're using the Kraken cooler it scratches very easily, you can see I managed to scratch mine (I recommend protecting/wrapping the pump if you need to remove it). Fortunately you won't notice any scratches while its in use.
  • The only problem I experienced with the cooler was with the CAM software. It wouldn't open but a re-install fixed that (make sure you install all available modules for CAM if you're having the same problem).
  • Also note the pump tubes only just clear the LPX corsair vengeance ram I have installed. I was originally going to upgrade to some yellow and black g.skillz trident z ram but realised it probably won't fit.

I was using the X52 as exhaust with negative air pressure (purely for aesthetics). I found switching to intake reduced GPU temps on my 980 TI (open air cooler) by 10-11 degrees, having the dust filter on top of that is a bonus. I haven't bothered changing it since.

As far as actually performance goes my CPU is clocked at 4.6ghz - 1.3 volts (4.7 seemed to be the max stable clock). I'll have to check temps and post some updates in the future because I can't remember exact load temps with this cooler.

Cable Management:

Once everything is installed cable management needs some good planning if you want to get the back panel back on. There aren't any mounting holes for cable ties but it's possible to work around this. I had to invest in a lot of cable mounts/ties but after many hours I'm happy with the result.

Future plans:

  • hoping to add another SSD 500GB-1TB
  • Full custom loop? Maybe one day...
  • Possibly some new speakers, I'm struggling to let go of these though. They're coming up on 20 years or but the sub they came with is incredible.

Other parts:

  • Ergotron MX Desk Mount with LCD Arm
  • 3m Mains Power Cable with 90 Degree Right Angled Kettle Type IEC Socket (black)
  • Toshiba Canvio Desk 5TB Desktop Hard Drive 3.5 Inch USB 3.0 - Black- HDWC250EK3J1. (drive removed and installed internally)
  • Xb1 elite controller
  • ROG Sheath mouse mat
  • Bitfenix alchemy individual pre-sleeved cables
  • Samus Amiibos
  • Too many extension cables & a USB hub

If there's anything you see that isn't listed here feel free to ask me.

Final note:

If I've learn anything from this build it's that blu tack is the ****. It single-handedly solved almost every problem I encountered along the way. I completely forgot it existed and I can't recommend it enough!

WOW If this doesn't get a feature I'd be pretty disappointed. Beautiful build, setup, and pictures. I'm impressed. +1

Congrats on the feature! You 100% deserve it

  • Lian-Li PC06SX
  • Samus
  • Pink and blue LEDs
  • Non standard keycaps

You checked off all my favorite things, we must be twins! Seriously though, the Lian-Li PC05 and 06 are my favorite chase, but sadly I don't have the finances for it. Samus is, by far, my favorite Nintendo character and Zero Mission is definitely in my top 5 favorite games. Beautiful build, it definitely gets a +1!

It's probably been asked already, but I haven't gone through all the comments... Where'd you get the artwork (Half zero suit / half Varia suit) that hangs on the right of your setup?

Aphrenedge submitter 2 Builds 1 point 22 months ago

Haha you're probably right. Honestly I really miss the Metroid games, I wish they'd make a come back. With current GPU tech they could put out some amazing looking games which I'm sure would make killer experiences. It's just a pity Nintendo won't put more powerful hardware in their consoles, they just aren't quite keeping up these days.

As far as the case goes I was really looking for something special and since I didn't have 5 grand to drop on an In Win S-Frame this was the next best thing (good god that S-Frame is a beaut)! When I first ordered the PC-06SX I actually regretted it until the moment it arrived... I honestly thought I had gone a bit crazy and made a big error but as soon as I saw it in person... totally worth it! The craftsmanship is amazing and you only really understand why priced like that after seeing and feeling it in person.

As for the artwork goes I think this is what you are after: https://www.aliexpress.com/item/Metroid-Samus-Aran-Power-Armor-Video-Games-Art-Silk-Poster-Prints-Home-Wall-Decor-Printing-11x20/32708104204.html?spm=2114.13010608.0.0.GYAVJo

I edited this image and used it as my ultrawide background before but once the poster arrived I decided to change it to something a little different.

Ryuhara 1 point 22 months ago

I'm still kinda mad about Nintendo trying to call Federation Force as a Metroid game tbh. Hopefully we see something for the Switch!

Thanks for the link to the poster! I found it on Redbubble, but dang AliExpress is way cheaper lol.

Aphrenedge submitter 2 Builds 2 points 22 months ago

Haha thank you! I don't know if I can part with that motherboard after all we've been through. How do you feel about 2 kidneys? They don't have be yours but I need to know you're committed

P.S read your bio... send me a link when you progress/complete that build! I too had a very limited budget not so long ago :D

Beautiful build and great work! If you do end up upgrading speakers, I would highly recommend some JBL LSR305's. I'm very picky when it comes to speakers, and the imaging and fullness these provide has just blown me away.

Aphrenedge submitter 2 Builds 1 point 21 months ago

Thank you man, I saw your build this morning, It's stunning! The photos are fantastic too, had to log in at work to +1 it asap after seeing the first few photos. I wanted to custom loop with some similar chrome fittings/tubing so I'll probably refer to it in the future.

How is the bass on the speakers do you think they'll require a stand alone sub? I was considering some audioengine a2+ a long with a sub but these look like a much more affordable option.

One other thing, what table top are you using? Those diagonal speaking/monitor risers look awesome. (edit) just had a proper look through the photos, I see you made them yourself... Awesome job.

WorkofHart 4 Builds 1 point 21 months ago

Thanks man. I really love the way your setup just jives together. I still need to find some kind of personal touch to dress up the walls and such. I don't really have any particular theme at the moment.

The JBLs are GREAT! The bass is plenty enough without a sub, although I may break down at some point and pick one up. It's in the same room as my home theater, so I have that to use if I need more than the JBLs provide. The thing is, they just image so freaking well, and sound so full that I don't even like vegging out in front of my theater anymore. The JBLs are just that good.

I had a few other people ask about the desktop, so I put some links in the main description for reference. Just two solid oak butcher block countertops from Ikea that I hacked up and formed together.

uberlizard 1 Build 1 point 22 months ago

Thats crazy good looking. Yellow and black is such an underrated color scheme, and it looks so good in this build. It's a real shame there's been like 5 feature worthy builds today and yesterday, cuz this one deserves one entirely.

+1.5

cuz im an upvote magician

Aphrenedge submitter 2 Builds 1 point 22 months ago

Thanks dude, I agree yellow and black is a great combo, there isn't enough of it around.

uberlizard 1 Build 1 point 22 months ago

know what would look really good? some custom painted yellow RAM heatsinks

BeerzGod 2 Builds 1 point 22 months ago

+1 for Seasonic Prime Titanium club! Also, the build looks pretty nice. ;)

Aphrenedge submitter 2 Builds 2 points 22 months ago

Thank you! Your Seasonic prime was one of the first things I noticed on your build yesterday. They're pretty rare at the moment but I'm not surprised at that price.

Sweet build by the way, love the tear down/assembly photos. It's so appropriately named and very well executed. Can't say I wasn't close to buying that case myself.

BeerzGod 2 Builds 1 point 22 months ago

I guess that makes us trendsetters. ;)

I lucked out and got a rebate deal on mine and I'm glad I pulled the trigger. These psu's are incredible and I sit right at 49-51% usage under load which I'm loving.

Thanks again!

Aphrenedge submitter 2 Builds 1 point 22 months ago

That sounds sweet, even at full price I love this thing! It's such a beautiful power supply and in terms of performance you just can't go wrong.

They should last us a while but with a 12 year warranty I don't think we'll need to worry. Here's hoping they don't change 6/8/24 pin tech in that time.

jakethemp 1 Build 1 point 22 months ago

Daaaaaaaaaaaaang! This thing is GREAT!

HyphyKing 1 point 22 months ago

nice choice in board, your setup looks amazing any reason why you choose 4 completely different drives?

Aphrenedge submitter 2 Builds 1 point 22 months ago

I had the 2TB and 120gb SSD left over from my previous build about 4 years about. I could easy drop both for this build but since I have the space I may as well install them.

I'd like another 500gb-1TB evo so I can store some more games on SSDs but honestly that's a luxury that I'll address further down the road (if ever).

rtr1999 2 Builds 1 point 22 months ago

(lol i looked at the pics yeah its witcher 3) man the big painting hanging over the monitor and pc, is it witcher 3 and if it is where did you get it, if you painted it how much would you charge for another, amazing build i'm really in aww anyways please tell me how you got the big witcher pic

Aphrenedge submitter 2 Builds 1 point 22 months ago

Hey, that's a silk poster I got from AliExpress:

https://www.aliexpress.com/item/The-witcher-3-Wild-Hunt-Art-Silk-Fabric-Poster-Huge-Print-20x53-24x64inch-Game-Geralt-Cirilla/32743800926.html?spm=2114.13010608.0.0.Dt8lDD

They have another large Witcher 3 poster but I'd recommend this 1, the quality of the image is better (I bought both to try and decide).

I'm actually looking to replace this poster as soon as I can find someone who can print a thin (78x24 inch) crop of Aloy and the Horizon logo from the image below:

https://images4.alphacoders.com/601/601157.jpg

I don't know if you've played it but I'd recommend checking it out if you haven't. It's no Witcher 3 or last of us but in terms of story driven rpgs it's probably the game that's come closest since those 2. I'm yet to finish the story since I'm obsessed with XCOM2 atm but everything I've seen up to 30-40 hours in is great so far.

rtr1999 2 Builds 1 point 22 months ago

if your taking about horizon zero dawn, yeah i really want to play it just a soon as i get a ps4, ive heard its really good

Pixal 1 point 22 months ago

99th +1, Nice build dude :)

Loving that monitor, but I wish I had the budget ;(

Aphrenedge submitter 2 Builds 1 point 22 months ago

Thanks dude, Ultrawide has really been the best thing I've bought for gaming since I got my first PCI-E gpu back when I was 16 haha. I'd say when you can afford it go for it. Hopefully they will come down in price over time.

ArrKayCee 3 Builds 1 point 22 months ago

Please please pretty please tell me where you got the amazing LoZ poster/painting/image! It looks awesome! And to comment on the rest of the build it is also awesome, if I had the ability to drill into my wall I would get the same everything except mobo.

eli_harper13 6 Builds 1 point 22 months ago

This is amazing! Just got a question I hope you will answer, how did you wall mount your PS4? I really want a PS4 but don't have the desk space so this would be perfect for me!

eli_harper13 6 Builds 1 point 22 months ago

And also, how is that monitor mount? I also have a 34" ultra-wide and I have been considering mounting it on an arm to save desk space and have it sit lower.

Aphrenedge submitter 2 Builds 1 point 22 months ago

Here's a link for the mount, I added 1 more photo (no. 8) of the monitor a little higher up on the mount. It has good range of movement and the build quality is top notch. Again have a look on youtube there's a guy who mounted a 34" lg monitor on it. It only shows a couple of clips but it'll give you a good idea of what it can do.

https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B001IWOBGI/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o08_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Aphrenedge submitter 2 Builds 1 point 22 months ago

Hey you can pick up the wall mount here:

https://floatinggrip.com/

It's really expensive for what it is but at the same time it's an amazing idea that's well executed. I considered trying to make it myself after watching some of their videos on youtube but in the end I decided my time was worth more to me and I'm happy with the final result.

If you are going to get the wall mount keep in mind it's not flush or completely parallel to the wall unless you mod it a bit. In my case I got blu tack and 2 coins to create a stopper at the bottom of the ps4 and keep it parallel with the wall.

Overall I recommend picking 1 up if you can justify the cost, the final product looks great with a bit of tweaking.

eli_harper13 6 Builds 1 point 22 months ago

Thanks a lot for getting back to me! I am definitely going to check this out. I just have to talk my wife into letting me get a PS4 lol

kylclrk 1 point 22 months ago

That extra SSD that you purchase in the future - make it an NVMe (PCIe x4) drive. SATA is simply limiting you at this point.

Amazing build, by the way. Seriously, I'm really jealous. I love your obsession with mounting stuff on the wall!

Aphrenedge submitter 2 Builds 1 point 22 months ago

Thanks!,I bought the case and already had the guillotine up on the wall. After that I kinda got carried away :p

I was looking into NVMe drives a while back but after watching comparisons and checking out benchmarks on load times of windows/programs/games I couldn't really justify the cost (1-2sec difference max in most cases). As far as I understand it for loading things the CPU seems to bottleneck them.

I will take another look though and weigh up the pros/cons again.

kylclrk 1 point 22 months ago

With an NVMe drive, I don't think you'll see much of a difference with boot times. It's data transfer/copying that you'd see the biggest difference. My new laptop came with one and the difference was amazing.

Aphrenedge submitter 2 Builds 1 point 21 months ago

Hey I ended up picking 1 up (860 evo 250gb)

I was pretty good but overall I didn't see much of a difference so I sent it back.

I think it might be worth it if I had 2 of them or had appropriate work loads but for now I'm going to pick up a 2nd 500gb evo instead. Thanks for the tip anyway, was good to test it out and confirm, I'll defo go for a couple a few years down the line when they aren't so expensive.

WorkofHart 4 Builds 1 point 21 months ago

860 or 960? I think the 860s are still just SATA drives (or maybe even PCIe), but not NVMe. It's the 950/960s that are NVMe and provide the substantial performance improvements.

Aphrenedge submitter 2 Builds 1 point 21 months ago

Sorry my mistake, I meant 960. Here's the one I tried:

https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B01M211K53/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I see you're using yours for production etc. Personally I used to use sony vegas and after effects but haven't for a couple of years now.

Overall I couldn't justify the gains in the programs I currently use. It is a pretty cool piece of kit, the speed and form factor are amazing.

P.S Got me looking at your build photos again, makes me want to water cool so bad haha

Loved Metroid, all the games. I'd love to see the monitor on a monitor mount, I think it would look a lot better. The Blue/Purple mixes really well with the Yellow.

Absolutely love it, one of my favorites on the website

Congrats on the feature

Aphrenedge submitter 2 Builds 1 point 22 months ago

Thanks a lot!

It's actually already on a mount if you check out some of the later pictures. I prefer to use the monitor in a low position unless I'm playing something immersive.

I was gifted the desk and the previous owner doesn't actually remember where he got it. He said he'll think about it so I'll let you know if anything comes up. It is at least 15-20 years old so I'm not sure it'll be available anymore.

kind of speechless at the moment. cable management is a 10, the aesthetic of the room is a 10, just everything seems to fit exactly into place.

definitely a +1 from me.

also, where did you get your LED Hue light strip from that you used behind your desk? been looking for a decent strip to use for my set up as well. they look great on yours.

Aphrenedge submitter 2 Builds 1 point 22 months ago

Thanks!

I'm using 2 NZXT HUE+ atm. I recommend them overall but make sure you research them properly before picking them up there are some small limitations. Only really problems I had overall were with the software but I've managed to trouble shoot those and it's working great currently.

UNIQUELYD 1 point 22 months ago

WOW is an understatement! This is a GREAT build. Now I have something to strive for! Any plans for SLI and/or water cooling?

Haha don't tempt me sir, with your talk of SLI and water cooling magic my wallet can't take much more.

I can't say it hasn't crossed my mind but for now I've got some saving to do. Maybe somewhere down the line, or even on the next build.

AWESOME BUILD!!! AND BEING A BIG FAN OF METROID/SAMUS WISH I COULD GIVE U A +20 =)

I understand everyone has there tastes and patience level...but I am w8ting for the EVGA GTX 1080ti FTW3 card...can't deny thats a sexy beast and I'm calling now...it will have the best design out of all the coming after market cards =) Looks like EVGA putting on their bigger boy pants and graduated to tri-coolers...you can tell the level of craftmanship and time they put into there soon to be released 1080ti =)

Congrats on feature!!!!

Heres my build so far. Right now its a tie for me between R5 1600X and the R7 1700..prolly will go with R5 though. https://pcpartpicker.com/list/cKvbZ8

Aphrenedge submitter 2 Builds 2 points 22 months ago

EVGA FTW3 or even SC is definitely the right choice! Send me a link/photos when you finally pick up the card and complete your build. I personally couldn't resist the founders when I saw it in stock a couple of days after release. Maybe if EVGA had announced a set date with more than rendered images at the time I'd have waited it out.

Worst comes to worst I'll sell this and switch to a FTW3 but I doubt it'll come to that, I'm very happy with the card as is.

Build is looking good so far! That case looks beast, I remember spotting it on here a few days back for the first time... Very nice.

islandg@m3r 1 Build 1 point 22 months ago

I respect why you got the Reference model =) but I'm like 85% certain that the FTW3 "will" top the benchmarks, OC Potential & Temps out of all of the after-market TIs (And probs the ASUS STRIX model as well) and ppl going to be salty AF that they rushed out and got the reference one (For the ones who pre-ordered that is) at least you w8ted until it was in stock and didnt do the pre-order hype. But I definitely will post images up once its built. Currently in a "WishList" format now, gotta save up some more dosh before I can even get at least 3 of the parts on list. Plus I got Bills haha.

BladedTombstone 1 point 22 months ago

How's your frame rate when you play games?

Aphrenedge submitter 2 Builds 1 point 21 months ago

Most games are about 70-100+ on ultra. Usually I adjust 1-2 settings to get a steady 80 preferably with 2x AA depending on the game.

The card really gets the job done.

Mushlafa 1 point 21 months ago

I've spent potentially hundreds of hours in my entire life browsing builds on this site over the last 5-8 years and never once felt like I needed to log in and comment on a build except this one.

Absolutely amazing looking setup. I'm going to save for some future inspiration on what I'd like to do.

Thank you.

Im currently looking to do a little project. I want to make a sign just like u did for your hdd/ssd cover with Samus on it. Where did you go to print this? or how did you make it?

Aphrenedge submitter 2 Builds 1 point 21 months ago

Hey, I picked this up at redbubble.com, it wasn't a custom print though. I think they only do predefined prints there but I'm not sure so it may be worth checking.

mxted 1 point 21 months ago

thank you, that works perfectly.

TribeofHenry 1 point 21 months ago

This build deserves all the props it is getting. You have excellent taste. I always appreciate a build that takes both performance and aesthetics into account. I'll be aiming to do the same on .. a much smaller budget. *grin

Also, thanks for taking time to capture excellent photographs!

boadicea 1 Build 1 point 21 months ago

Absolutely stunning... what are those desk lights your using??

Aphrenedge submitter 2 Builds 1 point 21 months ago

Thanks, I'm currently using a pair of NZXT HUE+. The lighting and effects are excellent but the software isn't perfect, and they do reset or switch occasionally so keep that in mind if you're thinking about getting them.

boadicea 1 Build 1 point 21 months ago

thanks for the response, this is a build im currently still debating on doing, i have the entho atx glass case but its really big, and i love how the lian li is wall mountable! certainly there is more room in the phanteks than the pc 06 but its a hard debate between myself. lol

heres what im working on right now

https://pcpartpicker.com/user/boadicea/saved/qB6dCJ

Aphrenedge submitter 2 Builds 1 point 21 months ago

np.

I had the exact same debate a while back but in the end I decided to go with this case and don't regret it. The phanteks evolv was a little to mainstream for me lol

If you are considering a Lian Li case keep in mind the PC-O6 is mATX. You'd probably be looking at a PC-O7 if you don't wish to change anything on the list. Again the GPU should fit the O7 but won't in the O6. The O7 is a large case though, check youtube to get a decent idea of it's size, personally it was too big for me. You'll also need to buy the wall mount (it's about 15pounds or 20$) and it only holds up to 16kg. My system is about 16-17kg if I remember correctly. I think it can handle a little over that but beware.

Also check if you can find a system using that motherboard/ram/cooler combo. The only reason I haven't got that ram myself is due to tube clearance issues.

Hope that helps a bit

That build looks like it'll be a real beauty. Send me a link if you ever post it, would love to see the result.

boadicea 1 Build 1 point 21 months ago

hey friend! thanks for the quick reply, i managed to find 2 other member son here using the PC-07 Which i believe im going to go with as well.

(links to both members builds respectively) http://pcpartpicker.com/b/yrZ8TW

http://pcpartpicker.com/b/n23bt6#cx2327504

The first member I believe did a some modding of his case to allow 2 extra 120 or 140mm fans(i forgot) for his back side as more intake i believe then the air gets exhausted through the top.

I of course have reservations of modding a $300 case but i suppose we shall see what temps say in summertime at loads but given the smaller confined space, doesnt seem like a terrible ideas if your decent with power tools. My step dads a general contractor and has a bunch of stuff so worst case scenario id use maybe his multi tool ect.

Updated it again, trying to get away from HDD's as i want to build a FreeNas System in the future but for the price idk how you go wrong with the storage :)

**This is without the 2 extra case fans for the mod http://pcpartpicker.com/user/boadicea/saved/JVxmGX

Aphrenedge submitter 2 Builds 1 point 21 months ago

lol that guy has some balls modding a case like this, I couldn't bring myself to do it. I terms of temps I use to have 1 of these in my O6:

http://www.gigabyte.com/Graphics-Card/GV-N98TXTREME-6GD#kf

I got to say it really struggled exhausting out the top if you read the guys full write up he actually changes to intake later on. I tested both myself and ended up in-taking on the top as well.

I was getting about 78-81 degrees at points but switching to intake dropped that to 68-71 degrees or so. It's part of the reason I picked up the founders card this time around. That guy didn't have an AIO cooler tho so I imagine it was even worse for him.

Just keep in mind your overall system is going to be heating up due to your gpu but if you're ok with that go for it. GPU boost may be effected a bit but I haven't had a chance to test it on an open air gpu yet. Are you going to be overclocking?

Not sure if you're read my write up but there are full details of problems you may come across. I wrote it for people in your position so you have a decent idea of what you're getting into.

Here's one other O7 build: https://pcpartpicker.com/b/XG9WGX

Feel free to add me on steam if you have more questions

jin0425 1 Build 1 point 20 months ago

Hello, I am new to PC-building and am looking into building one with a NVidia 1080 ti. Do you think using the same parts as you did, except replacing the GPU with Nvidia 1080 ti, would cause any compatibility issue? Thank you in advance!

Aphrenedge submitter 2 Builds 1 point 20 months ago

Hi,

That should work fine. I'm using a 1080 Ti in this build atm without any issues.

jin0425 1 Build 1 point 20 months ago

Even more mods??? My god bro you're amazing.

drekavac6 1 point 20 months ago

Incredible build. Is that PCI-E riser in the pictures the one that came with the case? And if not do you have a link to it?

Aphrenedge submitter 2 Builds 2 points 20 months ago

Thanks, yeah it came with the case. Lian li also sell them separately if you're looking for one.

WorkofHart 4 Builds 1 point 19 months ago

Are you referring to the M.2 riser card between the GPUs?

bulibuli 1 point 18 months ago

hi! the fan actually better configured as exhaust or intake? and, can you do push-pull (clearance) on the rad for this casing?

Aphrenedge submitter 2 Builds 1 point 18 months ago

Hey,

If you're air cooling it needs to be intake really, push pull isn't an option either you'll only have about 25-30mm clearance for your rad.

I finished putting a full custom loop in a couple of weeks ago I'll post that revision of the build soon but with a custom loop I'm exhausting out the top instead.

iplayasax 1 Build 1 point 16 months ago

You have done with less than 3,000$ what many builds on PCPP fail to do at 10k+. That is inspire. I have your build bookmarked. It's beautiful.
