Build

**The Purple Pixel Eater**

by ThereIs0nly0ne

Description

This build recently replaced an older rig based around an i7 6600k / GTX 980 and is used to drive a multitude of DIY game related accessories I've built over the years. These include:

  • PC Gaming setup (Purple Pixel Eater)
  • Racing simulator (R-Pod MKII)
  • Arcade cabinet (Vewlix Slim)
  • Console style cabinet (Raptor)
  • Space Simulation Seat (CP-1)

The Purple Pixel Eater desk is a heavily customized Trexus (very stable with a vanity board to hide the powerstrip and cabling) with a custom built monitor shelf with the monitor mount embedded into it. The PC sits on a dedicated display stand which also serves as a cabinet for hiding the router, another powerstrip and associated cabling.

The Vewlix Slim arcade cabinet was originally built in 2009 but has undergone a few modifications to get it into the state it's in now. I use my personalised Maximus Arcade front end to access to games. It uses Sanwa parts and houses a 4.1 sound system running in dual stereo.

The R-Pod MKII replaced a previous and much simpler version. This project alowed me to develop my rudimentary DIY skills further and most of the techniques used were really ju experimentations on my part. This took about 350 hours to complete. It uses Fanatec hardware and houses 4 Buttkicker mini LFEs for tactile feedback. I plan on addeding 2 more screens at some point when I have more space available.

The Raptor was built for my son to allow us to enjoy 2 player games in a more comfortable configuration and has seen a lot of action over the years. I would like to revisit the white side panels at some point an use a different colour to give some individuality.

The CP-1 space simulation seat is a current work in progress with the intention to use VR for Elite Dangerous and Star Citizen. Everything is custom made including all the seat panels / upholstery.

With all the projects, I have tried to give them their own individuality whilst still tying them together with a similar aesthetic style. Everything was built with a fairly basic toolset using a small workbench set up in the garage or outside depending on the weather.

What I enjoy as much as anything is having an idea and doing everything I can to realise the original essence and function. I find this hobby really rewarding.

The PC build may not be as impressive as many, I am very happy with the outcome and feel I get value for money from it as it servers a multitude of functions

Can I be you when I grow up?

ThereIs0nly0ne submitter 1 Build 1 point 31 months ago

You can! Easy for me to say but it just requires patience and application (plus some investment) !

ThereIs0nly0ne submitter 1 Build 1 point 31 months ago

Thanks - it's the angles which tie everything together :) Appreciate the comment.

thisunami 1 point 31 months ago

did you custom make the monitor stand?

ThereIs0nly0ne submitter 1 Build 1 point 31 months ago

I did. It's made from MDF. The sides were cut, filled and spray painted with the main section covered in blackboard vinyl. It has a supporting structure underneath as well to ensure it's stable.

Looks gorgeous. Take all my +1s.

ThereIs0nly0ne submitter 1 Build 1 point 31 months ago

Thank you. Not to everyone's taste I'm sure but I'm very pleased with how it all turned out.

I need to change pants...

ThereIs0nly0ne submitter 1 Build 2 points 31 months ago

Cheers. It's all made with non absorbant materials so it's easy to wipe everything down ....

How's the PG278Q?

ThereIs0nly0ne submitter 1 Build 1 point 31 months ago

I'm really enjoying it. It was a step up from the 1080p Iiyama monitor I had. The extra resolution, G Sync and particularly the increased refresh rate make a massive difference.

Absolutely stunning man. Others can only dream of what you have. Good work mate.

ThereIs0nly0ne submitter 1 Build 1 point 31 months ago

Thank you very much. I did spend a lot of time dreaming these projects up!

I'm also very fortunate to have a wife who was happy to sacrifice a room for my indulgences.

I'll post some links to the build logs when I get home this evening if that's of any help.

twaelbroeck 1 point 31 months ago

Wow. I doubt I've ever seen a cleaner desk. +10 if I could

ThereIs0nly0ne submitter 1 Build 1 point 31 months ago

Thanks! I'm a little obsessive about everything being clean and matching :)

twaelbroeck 1 point 31 months ago

What desk is it? It looks fantastic

ThereIs0nly0ne submitter 1 Build 2 points 31 months ago

Thank you. It a heavily customized Trexus. I chose it for stability and the size - at the time I bought it, I didn't have too much space available in my room.

There's a summary of the customization process here if you would like to know a little more:

Sweet build +1.

How's the formula? Run into any issues? I'm looking to get the same one for my build.

ThereIs0nly0ne submitter 1 Build 2 points 31 months ago

No issues at all with it or the build in general. Seems very solid so far. Enjoy it if you do get one!

dannychen2016 1 point 28 months ago

hey nice build

i got the same chip and mobo, i was able to overclock it to 4.5 Ghz, but my vcore was 1.45 v, what was your vcore? i just need to know so i can find out whether is the mobo design sending out more v than it should, or i just didn't win the silicon lottery

If you mean the CP-1, it's covered in the last few pictures - it's styled more on one of the seats from Elite Dangerous than the one James T Kirk uses :)
