Description

So what do you do when you get a new job? Blow it on computer parts of course! (Who needs a car?)

So this is the second (kind of) rendition of Puff. I gotta say, I could not be happier with how this has turned out (so far). I love absolutely everything about it. Now let's get into the reasoning behind some parts shall we?

FX-6300: The Very first part ever bought for my PC that has slaved it's way through 3 years of pampering (Abuse). Right now I have it clocked at 4.4 Ghz at 1.304 V and it has never crashed on me, nor does it get very hot.

Hyper 212 EVO: Here is a funny story. so I HAD a AIO cooler from CoolerMaster (ironic name) that had a pump failure on me after about a year. The real kicker is I have been getting better temps from the little bad boy, at a higher overclock, and it's running quieter. 10/10

MSI 970A Krait Edition: What can I say? I'm a sucker for color coordination.

Kingston HyperX Fury 16GB: Love it's low profile heat spreaders, and never had an issue with them.

OCZ Trion 480GB: Had a HD failure and never really used the 1TB space I had, so I decided to go full SSD. I plan on picking up another in the future.

Sapphire RX 470: Now before you all hate me, screaming bottleneck left and right, and how it's overpriced, I got this card for $177 BRAND NEW. I only game on 1080p, so I don't need more than 4GB of VRAM. I have had nothing but good experiences with sapphire as a company, and this card has a premium feel, for a low price. The fact it stomps every game I throw at it, is a plus!

NZXT S340: Absolutely one of the best budget cases on the market. The only real grip I have had with this case, would have to be the limited room, which should be expected from a case of this size. The thumbscrew do tend to annoy me at times, but they are not bad at all.

EVGA P2 650W: Absolutely fantastic. Got one for my father's build, jealously ensued, so I had to pick one up as well.

Case Fans: Run quite, push a good amount of air, and they are cheap.

Overall, I love the build, but I am nowhere NEAR done upgrading it. I plan on going Intel for the future, but that is not in the near future. Needless to say, this build will come back with a Vengeance on it's third rendition.

I appreciate the high confidence in my build!

I really like the look of it, really like that cable managing and the video card led's look pretty sweet. As for the 6300, I feel like one of few people still rooting for AM3+. Although my reuse of my 6300 was short lived and turned into an 8350 from my brother 1 month later (because 8 core CPUs are only really outdone by an i3 6100 by benchmarks ; their extra cores and threads are great for multitasking) I think that you can't do much better sub $100.

One of the better sub 900 builds you'll find on this website. Nice job.

Thank you very much! and yeah the 6300 is still good and all (after you overclock it), but I look forward to upgrading to intel. Mostly for better temps, and the motherboard I want will match this build PERFECTLY. :D

  • 2 points

Nice. i5 6600k is one of the best intel CPUs for value imo ;) I actually might even make that leap myself haha

  • 2 points

Yup, that's the one I am going to upgrade to. I also already have the motherboard in mind for it. I don't need a 6700k, since I hardly do any productivity. The only thing I really do on this is play games, do light game development, and edit music.

  • 1 point

Same, I personally think that a 6700k for $100 more is less rewarding than the i5 (diminishing returns as they say) and the 6600k has to be like among the top 5 gaming CPU's I'm sure (because what you really need is strong quad core performance rarely more) As for game developing, I dunno as what I use is my school's Xeon 2.4 GHz x 6 CPU workstation PCs and UDK and a bunch of texture making apps but I think an i5 would be fine if it's not your main function, or if you don't do it as intensely as some people at my school would.

You're definitely gonna have fun with that PC

Oh might I ask what is that LED strip? I've been looking for white blue or RGB LEDs for my Air 240 case that fit a 6 Pin PCIE or 2 pin molex that can adapt into a 6 pin PCIe splitter that I have. Can you link me the one you have by chance?

  • 1 point

Sure can. And the LED strip actually plugs into a SATA connector.

This is the one I have

http://www.performance-pcs.com/flex-lights/cablemod-widebeam-foam-adhesive-led-strip-white-30cm-15-leds.html

I have seen much better results with CableMod compared to BitFenix. Much brighter and crisp white, while BitFenix tends to have muted colors.

Dragon on the side is pretty cool. Did you have it painted on or is it a sticker?

It is a custom vinyl made by me and a friend when we were both still in high school. sadly, I moved away, and he went into the military, so I never get to talk with him.

I'm kind of infatuated with that decal. Probably about to start building something in an S340, cause it's like the sexiest reasonably-priced case out there, and after seeing this I'm going to have to design a funky decal for it.

it was very cool to make it with my friend, and as an added bonus, it helped steer the theme of my build with the blue/white/back.

That rx 470 4gb is a price/perf King , at one point Powercolor was selling their version for 178$ on newegg, I almost bought 2 because 350$ worth of xfire headache was tempting. You know I got a 1440p monitor and my bottleneck from my fx 8320 disappeared just about on my Gtx 1070. I was gonna buy an i7 but I think I'll wait now till zen shows up and disappoints me and then I'll buy an i7 lol

  • 1 point

Lol, I would not crossfire mine . I have seen a lot of weird benchmarks where the 2nd card has not even been utilized, and it actually hurt performance in some games. I have been getting 60+ FPS on any game I play maxed out (besides ARMA 2 because it has the worst optimization ever).

SNIFF SNIFF, I SMELL A FEATURED BUILD but on a more serious note how's the rx 470

  • 1 point

sadly, I did not get the feature, but thanks for the kind words!

On another note, I could not be happier with the 470. I was able to get it to 1380 stable with upping the power limit by 10%. Runs silent as well, and never crashes. hottest it has gotten from stress testing was 70c. I was actually able to hit 1400, but it would crash after awhile during benchmarks.

Dang, every time i see someone with the 470 Sapphire it makes me wish I had just spent the extra 30 bucks on it, the card is just amazing looking,

It was not hard to make, just the machinery involved is ludicrously expensive.

Got them from performance Pcs. Look up CableMod extention kit. Highly recommend them.

Tell me How it works with this GPU? have the same CPU as you Tks

  • 2 points

The fx 6300 and the rx 470 make a great pair, but only if the CPU is overclocked. It would probably bottleneck hard if my CPU was not overclocked as much as it is. other than that, it destroys any games I have thrown at it so far.

Do you think you can tell me what your settings was to achieve the PC you have? I also have a 6300 w/979 krait and it is confusing.

  • 1 point

Im not sure what you are trying to ask by what my settings were. are you asking about the overclock?

  • 1 point

yeah the overclock (sorry autocorrect on my phone)

  • 1 point

All I had to do was boost the voltage to 1.304 and change the multiplier to (I think) 23.5 or something similar. if you want, you could use the OC genie in the BIOS. It got a overclock pretty close to my manual one, so give that a shot.

Don't know if its too late, but I would stick with amd and get their new Ryzen 5s coming out this month or next month. The am4 mobos are also surprisingly affordable. Excellent build.

Oh, I am sorry, it looked like you had painted the top fin in the CPU cooler stack..., or it was another build I was looking at... I could just be getting crazy this morning. Plz disregard.

Where did you get the hyper 212 evo? Every one of them I see and find online is black but yours is white.

  • 1 point

this should be featured i dont see anything wrong with it aside from the ram being blue in a white pc

  • 3 points

The blue ram is actually part of the color scheme. The front dragon has blue in it, my SSD has blue on it (slightly lighter shade sadly), and the graphics card has the blue LED. I had it on rainbow mode for taking pictures (why not?) But I always have it on blue otherwise.

Thank you for thinking this is feature worthy though!

  • 1 point

i think the ram blue is a little overpowering as its fully blue rather than blue highlights but thats just me and this pc though its great
