Description

I have not built a PC since the first gen i7's (i7 920) probably 10 years ago! My current computer before this build was an old Dell office computer (i5 2400) that I was able to transplant into a bigger case and stick an RX 460.

In the last few years I have been toying with the idea of upgrading to a new system, but prices have been significantly higher than what I was prepared to pay (as we had the high RAM prices, Intel CPU prices were high, the mining boom (even though its over) looks to have permanently lifted the starting prices of graphics cards....).

But! in Australia eBay seems to have sales on every now and again and its possible to bag some good deals, and I found a good deal on the CPU, GPU and RAM... Therefore, I pulled the trigger! I did buy the Motherboard locally here in store though.

The rest of the components that I have priced as zero I already owned.

Comments

  • Not a fan of RGB

  • There is a lot of worry due to complaints on Reddit about MSI motherboard performance issues. I have none of these issues at all.

  • The stock cooler requires the removal of the the existing CPU cooler mounts that come on the motherboard, as the design is different. (just requires a Philips screwdriver)

  • The reference RX 5700 blower design also had me a little worried about heat/performance. This turned out to be a non-issue so far - but will have to do some more stress testing to confirm (I was even considering under volting but at this stage does not appear to be necessary.)

  • I have a gsync monitor, so it was quite the decision to to go with team red - ultimately, it was the GPU price/performance I could get that was the deciding factor.

  • I actually only have the 2 Phantek case fans that came with the case... Temps have not been an issue as yet but I am thinking of changing them in the near future - Aussie summer can be toasty

  • After building, the CPU cooler is quite loud. I am considering changing it - ok - i just bought the Mugen 5 Rev. B and we will see how that goes.

Yet To Do

  • Stress Testing

  • Overclock

I'll update once I have done some overclocking and stress testing!

look for mobo’s that have a sticker saying they support the 3000 series, all the MSI mobos that have “MAX” in the name have been updated to support the 3000 series.

And I reckon even if you had a mobo that needs to be flashed, any store you purchase it from who is worth their salt would prob do it for you if you asked.

Nice build! +1

How is this build doing? I bet after CPU cooler upgrade you can barely hear any noise from PC.

How is your GPU doing? Many people report stability issues with RX 5000 series due to bad drivers. How's your experience?

Apparently it does, there’s also an app it comes with called Mystic Lights you can use to control them.

I don’t know how it looks as I don’t have a window and I have not downloaded the program
