Description

Hello builders! I have another system for you guys. This time I was tasked with building a general gaming computer themed around the colors of the Pokeball. With about a $1200 (including monitor) budget to work with, this is what came to be.

Goals for this build:

  • Have solid all-around gaming performance
  • Maintain a red, white, and black color theme

PARTS:

  • CPU:

The 8320 is always a solid go-to gaming CPU. With the potential to overclock to 8350 speeds and eight cores, you can’t really go wrong for the price. An i5 could have worked here too, but it would have likely prevented the color theme and/or the R9 290. I was very happy with this chip. I was able to get a stable 4.5 Ghz at 1.43v, but clocked it back to 4.0 Ghz at 1.35v and ran all tests at those settings. Temperatures were very nice too.

  • COOLER:

It isn’t tough to see why I picked this cooler. It’s definitely a sight for sore eyes! Plus the LED is like the flash from a Pokeball opening. Okay, all of that aside, this thing simply performs. Temps were quite low and the fan wasn’t even trying. I had the fan set to 35% for idle and it never needed to ramp up during Prime 95 tests. Overall it’s very quiet and had a slick mounting system.

  • MOTHERBOARD:

I’ve used this board twice before so I felt safe going with it again. The black PCB is very appealing and the board layout is smart on Gigabyte’s part. The 990FX chipset is my usual choice for an 8xxx chip and overclocking was obviously going to happen.

  • MEMORY:

I was a little let down here. The 2133 kit would not run stable at the rated speed. I ended up having to leave the speed at 1600. This isn’t the end of the world as it doesn’t really change a whole lot in terms real-world performance numbers, but I was bummed. I got this kit on sale and it is CAS 9 so I was excited to see if the extra speed would improve numbers, but maybe next time.

  • STORAGE:

I had to go with the 1 TB drive to store all of those games and media. Western Digital has been very reliable for me. A SSD could possibly have been added, but again the 290 wouldn’t have been possible.

  • GPU:

One of the highlights of this build is the R9 290. This is a monster GPU! MSI have really outdone themselves with the construction. Since these cards don’t need crossfire bridges, a support bar has been added to help prevent sagging. The back plate is also a nice touch. To anyone losing his/her mind about the AMD card temps, this card ran under perfectly normal temps on the stock auto fan profile (it never went over 40%. I was very happy to squeeze this into the build as it will last the new user a long, long time.

  • CASE:

This is the best case I have ever built in. There is nothing that even compares to it for the price. The Fractal R4? Yeah right. This thing is such a good value for $100. PSU shroud, tons of room and support for liquid, more grommets and Velcro tie downs than I knew what to do with, hidden HDD cages, an organized screw holder, pre-routed front panel cables, a PWM fan hub with fans you don’t need to replace, and the sexy side panel of the Enthoo Primo without the price tag. There just aren’t enough good things I can say about this case, so I’ll just stop drooling and move on.

  • PSU:

The Rosewill Capstone series is tier 2 and Gold rated. 650 watts is plenty for this rig as long as he doesn’t try to add another 290. I’ve used a Capstone PSU on a previous build and felt good going with it again. Plus it was on sale, so it made sense.

  • EXTRAS:

I threw in some Silverstone extensions for fun and to really make the color theme work. The optical drive speaks for itself. It burns and stuff. The pokeball was painted by my girlfriend at the last minute. The shroud seemed a little too plain. I think it really made the build stand out!

CONCLUSION:

Another build down and another customer satisfied. This was a fun one. If there is one thing AMD does well it’s the price to performance. Getting my hands on the Enthoo Pro so far outweighed the slight memory problem and in the end the new user got what he wanted!

I wonder why this build is being held for moderator approval. Sam's builds are always awesome. And considering how many he's done, this seems slightly counter-intuitive.

Regardless of all of that, another fine build Sam.

Pokeball themes a bit of a strange one, but it looks great.

What's that case like to build in/generally? I'm considering getting one.

  • 4 points

Some review sites have stated its the best case of 2014. I'd have to agree with them.

  • 2 points

I still like my new R4. Didn't see the need for that much space or that many fans. The Enthoo Pro is sooooo nice though

  • 2 points

The theme was a bit tougher than the usual, that's for sure.

It's the best case I've built in. The Switch 810 is great, but this thing kills it. So much room behind the tray and almost too many tie down points. The windowed panel could take a bullet and everything else is rock solid. I really like the PWM fan hub too. Definitely recommended!

I think the only thing that I didn't like is that the shroud makes bottom intake impossible. I would have liked to be able to put a 140 on bottom for extra intake with the shroud still covering the PSU. A small complaint, but other than that it is amazing.

Wow, all your builds are fantastic i must say! I have always seen your builds on here, but never realized you were the one behind all of those awesome builds! You do a fantastic job and i have to admit i have gotten some ideas from your builds for one of the builds i did. Great job though on all 21 builds!! Keep em comin'!! :D also i was wondering, how much do you charge your clients (if any)?

  • 1 point

Thank you! I was actually looking at one of your builds today, the one with the green 970 I believe. Such a pretty card! I'm glad I could be of some assistance on your build! :D I hopefully will have a build in April, but I never know when a client will need something done. I charge 10% for building and setting up the OS to whatever extent they need me to. I don't have a data caps so I'll download your entire Steam library if you want. If the person is local I accept gifts (beer) or an exchange of favors. Unfortunately I live in a town of 1,000 people so the client base is almost entirely through here or the rest of the internet.

Hey thank you! That is awesome though. I really want to build pc's for a living.. or even as a side job for now. Just don't know how to get started and such. Saving for school and working right now. Building pc's for a living is a dream of mine. ha.

  • 1 point

I started building locally to anyone that would let me do it. Since it's a small community everyone knows everyone. I think it would be cool to work for a company that built custom rigs, Xidax is the only that comes to mind. Although I like being able to have free reign on choosing parts and making a build look really cool. My photography definitely helped me get noticed. If you can borrow a DSLR or find something a few years old on Ebay/Craigslist, it helps tremendously. Anyone can take blurry pictures on a phone, but when you see a build that captured in nice crisp, clear pictures, that's when they really shine.

Sweet thanks! I just don't want someone screaming in the comments "you stolez his ideaz!"

The build is going towards the same Poke ball theme, and here is the part list I'm using if you want to give an opinion:

http://pcpartpicker.com/user/beardofsocrates/saved/6jZdnQ

Notes: The only reason why I'm considering the i5 was due to it's impact on RTS and RPG games like Skyrim.

The motherboard choice... well I just went for looks. I'm not 100% sure which would be the best choice for appeal/price/performance..

  • 1 point

How's the case? Specifically the quality of the window, that was the one thing I heard about it that was a bit sub-par.

  • 1 point

Window is quite solid. It's on par or better than my Switch 810 window. This is easily the nicest case I've built in for the price. It kills everything.

  • 1 point

Great, now I have to just decide between the pro and the luxe lol.

  • 1 point

How do you like the enthoo pro?

  • 1 point

It's a brilliant case to say the least.

  • 1 point

Great to hear. I'm waiting for an excuse to build another computer so I can get my hands on one. It just seems too good to be true. A beautiful, well built full tower with amazing airflow and water cooling support and seperate compartments for the PSU and HDDs. It got perfect reviews from hardwarecanucks and Linus. I just wanted some confirmation of this from someone with real world experience.

  • 1 point

I watch a ton of videos from those guys and this was the first case that they really didn't have anything bad to say about it. I had to get my hands on it. This thing could easily cost $150+. It has all of those little things that you would love to have in a case for a fairly budget price. This thing destroys the Fractal R4. Like no comparison at all.

  • 1 point

Well of course, the fractal may be better for someone who wants a smaller, more quiet build, but it outright destroys every other case that enters the performance category at its price.

  • 1 point

I was choosing between this and the R4 and I went for the R4. I don't regret it. I mean, yes, the Enthoo Pro is awesome especially for the money. That being said, I liked the smaller size of the R4 and the silent features, that and it was on sale. No real point to this, just saying that both are good! :)

  • 1 point

POKÉBALLS ARE AWESOME!

Question: Could you tell me how loud the 200m front intake fan is? I believe it's a 3-pin fan so you can't exactly control it that much.

At 100% speed, right next to you while using the computer, is it too noisy? At night, could you sleep with that big guy spinning?

I always have my headphones on, however, when I'm gaming and my girl is sleeping, I can't have much noise coming from the computer.

I'm decided to buy the Enthoo Pro, I just need to know if I should change the front intake fans for dual 140mm fans (or whatever else) because of the noise.

  • 2 points

You are in luck my friend. The Enthoo Pro comes with a PWM fan hub. That means that you plug all of your case fans into this hub (up to 6 I believe) and then a single PWM cable comes from that hub and plugs into your motherboard. That allows for all of your fans to be software controlled. You can slow them down or speed them up as you see fit. Make sure you do not plug in the SATA power cable as well as the PWM plug. It will force the fans to run at full speed and yes they are loud at full speed, but not unbearable. Hope that helps!

  • 1 point

I have no experience in controlling fans through software. All I know how to do is set them in the BIOS on a determined profile and leave them be. That's why I believe they will all be at 100% at all times.

However, if I plug all my case fans in the PWM hub and I use different headers for the hub and the CPU cooler, I guess I can find out what's the best speed and, as they will all go up or down together, my negative pressure will remain.

If it's not too much to ask, which one do you prefer: Positive or Negative pressure (for this case model)?

  • 2 points

That will work. You will be able to control the CPU cooler separate from the case fans.

I always prefer positive. It helps to prevent dust.

  • 1 point

I'll start with a positive pressure then. If everything is cool, I'll leave it like that.

I know dust is a problem but I don't mind cleaning the computer every month or two... anyway, thanks a bunch.

That's cool man, I've had some trouble looking for good advice on a gaming rig to get for me and my father. I will fund $600 and he will fund $600 so we can get a $1000 ($300 goes to a program) build most likely from pcpartpicker. If you could review my build and tell me what you think, that would be great. Thanks Man

http://pcpartpicker.com/user/Webster16/saved/QjcBD3

please consider shipping costs

P.S. I already have a Screen, I already have a HDD, I already have a Optical Drive. Also I don't intend on overclocking (but likely will if performance doesn't meet my standards at stock speeds) and can you help get the build under $1000?

  • 1 point

Is your intent to use this primarily as a gaming PC? If so there are a few changes that I can make to knock the price down.

  • 1 point

Primarily for gaming at some points, video editing at other points, and being able to easily multitask anytime no matter what you're doing.

50/50 Gaming / Video Editing

Notice I edited the build

  • 1 point

The only way I see to get the budget closer to $1k is to drop the CPU, GPU, and CPU cooler down a notch. All of the other parts are fairly inexpensive and they are equally proportioned.

To maintain the editing and multitasking performance as well as the gaming you might consider a FX-8370E.

  • 1 point

I have a question about the fan hub that you might be able to solve. So, it says to plug it in to your cpu fan connector, but if you do, where do you plug your cpu fan? Do you plug it into another 4-pin on your motherboard? Thanks a lot, and Nice Build. +1 for pokeball color scheme!! :D

  • 1 point

If you have an optional CPU fan header use that for the fan hub. You can use any other 4 pin fan headers that are wired for PWM. You need to look at the manual to see which are which. Otherwise you can just plug your CPU fan into the hub, it won't hurt it any.

i i love that build you did and how neat the cables are!!!!!! But have a few questions: What do you think of this motherboard??? Any issues????? I was going to either get this motherboard or the Asus Saberooth R 2.0

  • 1 point

Thank you sir!

This motherboard is a really nice value and a solid overclocker for entry level 990FX. I would suggest Intel in 2015 though. AMDs FX chips are becoming rather dated.

  • 1 point

Why do you suggest intel??? Is AMD bad??? If so i will probably get an Intel cpu and motherboard and then get the graphics card later.

And what do you mean by "dated"??? Could you clear up on that becuase i dont really understand...

  • 1 point

I suggest Intel because the FX-8350 is from 2012 and many newer CPUs have come from Intel since then. It's hard to justify buying something that old. The performance gains over time are in favor of Intel.
