Goal for this build was simplicity and performance. Understated black and white theme. This is the most capable system I have owned or built. I did not seek out LED enabled components although I did buy a case with a side window in the event I ever wanted LEDs. As it turns out the graphics card does have LEDs integrated and it looks pretty cool. Considered AIO water cooler but decided to commit that extra cash towards higher end graphics card. Waited for CoffeeLake after waffling between Ryzen and Intel KabyLake. CoffeeLake seems to split the difference from a core perspective (6 cores) while beating Ryzen and Kabylake in single core performance (at least for now). New Z370 MBs required for CoffeeLake due to different pin-out definition of LGA1151 socket. Seems identical to Z270 MB for most other features. I wanted a specific case size to fit a built-in shelf in my office. This ended up requiring a uATX MB which was fine with me. Build went smooth with only one minor issue; sound driver not functioning correctly. Reloaded and all is well.
Asrock Z370m MB: Seems solid. Has all the basics. But no integrated wireless (I'm using cabled LAN). Has two M.2 slots. USB3.1 and 3.0. BIOS is easy to navigate. And the fan curve customization function is decent once I figured it out. Has MB temp sensor which can be used for fan control input along with CPU. Wish this MB had one or two more fan headers. Used a fan splitter cable to overcome this limitation. I built a lower end gamer for my child more than two years back using Asrock. We have not had any issues with that MB.
Intel Core i5-8600k (CoffeeLake); Seems really good but runs hot. K versions are unlocked but I have not tried overclocking yet. Boosts to 4.2 GHz. Had to wait a few weeks to receive after back ordering. Intel clearly did a soft launch with limited supply. Considered getting i7 but after reviewing available benchmarks it did not seem to worth the added expense.
EVGA GTX1080TI: This thing is a beast. Highly recommended
Corsair Vengence 3200 DDR5: chose largely based on available white heat spreaders to match system color scheme and price at the time (man, memory prices are getting crazy, I see these same DIMMs have already jumped $40 since I purchased 6 weeks back).
Samsung PM961 1TB NVMe M.2: NewEgg had a special on these. Saved ~$100 over Samsung EVO 1TB. From what I have read the PM961 performance is not as good as the EVO (I have not tested its performance) but, nevertheless, its much faster than any SATA SSD. I will never build with HDDs again - every system I have ever owned has had a HDD failure. I look forward to their demise.
Fractal Design Define Mini-C case: sleek but understated. Came with two case fans. I added one more identical fan for a two inlet, one exhaust configuration. I have ordered a second exhaust fan as I have changed the exhaust location to the top of the case to be compatible with my installation location. However, I am finding it is running hotter than when the fan is in the rear so I am going to try the second top mounted exhaust fan.
Cryorig H7 fan: looks good, quiet. installation a little tedious but doable.
EVGA Supernova 550W G3 power supply: Some may argue that this supply is a little under sized form my build. But I don't have plans to use dual graphics in this case. I have not measured power being pulled from AC outlet but I have no evidence of running short. I suspect this build never pulls more than 400W, This is a modular PSU so just used cables that were needed. I think there may be better PSU deals if I looked harder. But it is a nice unit. Very little fan noise. Gold efficiency rating and has ECO mode that will shut of fans when power draw is low enough.
Monitor: Dell S2716DG: This is a 27" 2560 x 1440 at 144Hz and G-sync. Runs around $500. Seemed like the best value "2k" monitor available. Picture is very good after some calibration.
Performance: PUBG seems to be a good GPU + CPU stressor since it is so poorly optimized. Running at ultra everything it plays consistently 70-110 fps. GPU tends to run at near 100% utilization and CPU at 50% utilization. CPU temps hit upper 60s. GPU temps hit mid 70s. This is with my three case fan arrangement and all fans at or near 100%. I hoping adding the second exhaust can bring down temps further. Again, I am not yet overclocking. 3DMark Time Spy benchmark score is about 8500.
