Description

I built this system in early 2014 and it has been overall a joy to work/play with. See below for a description of my build and an overview of its performance.

i7 4770K (4.7GHZ @ 1.264v) & 4-way crossfire R9 290 paired with Benq XL2730z eyefinity. Thats 7680 x 1440p eyefinity - about 25% more pixels than UHD (~4K). Since AMD has not yet released single GPUs with 3 x DPs, I have to, for now, stick with DP + DVI,+ DVI. I have OC-ed the DVI up to 120hz and they seem to handle it okay but I have had some detection issues at times when gaming. I suspect the included DVI cables cant handle the MHZ. For now I am running 80 hz @ 1440p eyefinity until the next big AMD GPU upgrade which I hope will include 3 x DP out and drivers for eyefinity freesync.

Most games run at very decent FPS at this resolution. If FPS drops below 50, minor tweaks without sacrificing any noticeable image quality can get it to very playable settings. Dragons age inquisition with tessellation on medium, no MSAA, and everything else on ultra settings nets me about 50-80 FPS. GTA V runs at 55-80 (v-sync on) at max settings minus MSAA and feels very smooth. BF3 runs at > 110 FPS most of the time and BF4 does about 80-100 FPS.

The 4-way crossfire has been overall well done. No major faults which is very surprising since I came from 5850 crossfire which was a big pain back in the day. All GPUs are watercooled with EK blocks and run about 55 C with a pretty good overclock on GPU/RAM of 1167/1375 at + 87mV. Its cooled with 480mm + 420mm + 360mm radiators running in series with two D5 pumps and the CPU block.

I know this is a 100% "screw it I'm gon' do this 'cause why not" kind of build, but seriously. Scaling is pretty bad from 2 to 3 and even more so from 3 to 4, and while I know the last one was a gift, 1500w watts is like a vacuum cleaner on most of the day. I don't even want to know your electricity bill...

Zhanchi 4 points 52 months ago

It only draws it when needed....

Euphemia 4 points 52 months ago

...and I would assume that a person who went out of their way to make a $6.5k build would game quite often. It wasn't too serious of a comment, in any case.

Anarchoprimitiv 1 Build 1 point 43 months ago

In the unites states, electricity costs 12.5 cents per kwhr, so even if drawing the full 1500w, it'd only cost about $22 for 120 hours of use

PigeonLord3639 7 points 44 months ago

pretty sure that this build can power Africa....

mojobear submitter 1 Build 1 point 42 months ago

Thanks! (?) :D

IrshaadH 1 Build 4 points 53 months ago

How on earth are you powering this rig with a cx600m?

mojobear submitter 1 Build 4 points 53 months ago

oh man im getting a comment a minute haha. its powered with an ax1200 + cx600m together linked with an ADD2PSU. all the psus and wires are hidden in the bottom compartment

IrshaadH 1 Build 1 point 53 months ago

Ah OK. AX1200 was really not enough for this setup? Wow

mojobear submitter 1 Build 3 points 53 months ago

When its overclocked - it does 1500 watt from the wall :D

NeonMane 1 Build 4 points 53 months ago

'Oly balls, that's a lot of power.

Zirthh 2 points 53 months ago

im a noob what do you mean my debezelling the monitors?

mojobear submitter 1 Build 10 points 53 months ago

it literally means taking the plastic shroud off the monitor with the goal of reducing the space between panels when running multimonitors like eyefinity/surround etc.

you can learn more here: http://www.overclock.net/t/1397263/the-official-debezelled-monitor-club

Zirthh 2 points 53 months ago

ah so making the bezel's shorter in a way?

mojobear submitter 1 Build 1 point 53 months ago

yah makes the distance between panels less so more pleasing with eyefinity

friedfacekkk 1 Build 2 points 53 months ago

That's one heck of a toaster oven you got there.....

mojobear submitter 1 Build 3 points 53 months ago

1300-1500 Watt toaster, depending on how much you overclock the toaster :)

ABJ117 2 points 53 months ago

I've been waiting for someone to do this.

optimusgaming 1 point 53 months ago

Woah...

sanchezliny 1 point 53 months ago

Very nice and clean build but why 4? +1

mojobear submitter 1 Build 3 points 53 months ago

3 was the sweet spot for me, good scaling in most games...but somehow I acquired a 4th as a gift and was like....ahh what the heck, why not put it in and throw in a CX600M to power it :) Add2psu is really convenient for that

APEBuilt 3 Builds 1 point 53 months ago

Expensive. Did you sell the stock coolers?

mojobear submitter 1 Build 1 point 53 months ago

Hey there - no kept the stock coolers. Going to transplant these into some HTPC or other build once I feel the itch to upgrade the GPUs in 1-2 years

APEBuilt 3 Builds 2 points 53 months ago

LOL! an R9 290 in a HTPC is hilarious!

mojobear submitter 1 Build 1 point 53 months ago

Haha I did a gtx 590 in a htpc for a while until the media center started getting too hot

Hej81107 1 point 53 months ago

If you ever want to upgrade, go tri/quad GTX 980's I don't know how well the 4 way 290 performs for you, but I know that dual 980s are capable of battlefield 4 60 fps ultra on 4k resolution, 3 or 4 you might be able to play crisis at 4k +1

mojobear submitter 1 Build 3 points 53 months ago

yah excellent performance to power ratio for the GTX 970/980s. Right now I'm 3/4 of the way to 4K with 5760 x 1080 resolution. When I run battlefield I do 130% scaling and it puts me over effectively a 4K panel...I still get very good framerates 80 fps+ although AMD is having issues with mantle and memory leaks...

Ksongs 2 Builds 1 point 53 months ago

... This is awesome +1

mojobear submitter 1 Build 1 point 53 months ago

thanks :D

Forester 1 point 53 months ago

That's hot.

mojobear submitter 1 Build 1 point 53 months ago

thanks! i think :D

Forester 1 point 53 months ago

I meant cool. :D

Firecrackers 1 Build 1 point 53 months ago

3 120hz 27" Monitors.

You're ready for being ready.

iraiderx 2 Builds 1 point 53 months ago

Wow nice, very very nice, my only limiting factor in accomplishing a build this great is money lol. Have any of your plugs, fitting, etc gotten loose over time?

mojobear submitter 1 Build 1 point 53 months ago

nice builds! I hope not...that would be an expensive leak

MacerV 1 point 53 months ago

Now time to upgrade your desk :P

mojobear submitter 1 Build 1 point 53 months ago

totally agree...

padako 1 Build 1 point 53 months ago

goodness! I'm going to need a few minutes to get my heart rate back down to normal levels now...

I like how the picture of the RAM in the parts list is a cardboard box lol

Hazarded 1 point 53 months ago

Um for 1080p a 2 way crossfire is better than 4 way oh well ont my build.

mojobear submitter 1 Build 1 point 53 months ago

its 5760 x 1080 :)

Hazarded 1 point 53 months ago

Still overkill lol

mojobear submitter 1 Build 1 point 53 months ago

ooh yah :D

OresGaming 1 point 53 months ago

Mmmmmmmmmmm

mojobear submitter 1 Build 2 points 53 months ago

mmmmmmmmmmmm

swiftfishy 2 Builds 1 point 53 months ago

The r9 290 is a great card on its own... I cant imagine having 4 way crossfire.

cobbleking 1 point 23 months ago

Only 3 people on this whole site do.

xdenttim 1 Build 1 point 53 months ago

instead of the add gpu i would of replaces those 5 years old monitors that are not even that good but debezelling does make it somewhat better is there anyway to get a pic

mojobear submitter 1 Build 1 point 53 months ago

desk is a mess. no pics for you

xdenttim 1 Build 1 point 53 months ago

alright man still a great build +1

mojobear submitter 1 Build 1 point 53 months ago

thanks!

mojobear submitter 1 Build 1 point 53 months ago

actually got an old pic up :D

xdenttim 1 Build 1 point 53 months ago

nice

Hman1250 1 Build 1 point 53 months ago

Yooo best friend, when are you gonna make my 2 way SLI 980 with 5960X?

XDestroyer 1 point 53 months ago

Mother of God.....

Scruffy_Nerfherder428 1 Build 1 point 53 months ago

Very nice build, voted. Ever thought about a Ergotech triple monitor mount? Thing is amazing, can mount up to 3 27inch monitors. Cleans up the desk space nicely.

mojobear submitter 1 Build 1 point 53 months ago

Dear God I would but after debezeling the monitors no vesa mounts! Good suggestion though.

smQC 1 Build 1 point 53 months ago

You can get 6 monitor mounts, 5760 x 2160px, up to 96in in some cases... Trying to think of ways to make those 4 cards do something or they will just put on weight :3

If I was going all out on 4 290s, even if one was free, I'd invest in some bling. A small disco of sorts. And a better case, Im not melting about the front of the elysium as much as I am over 4 290s.

Otherwise, I love it! With most others going for polished refinement and efficiency, I love a good blast of ridiculousness :D

8F01C198997 11 Builds 1 point 53 months ago

Aren't you only getting 4 lanes per GPU? Why didn't you at least go with an i7-5820K?

mojobear submitter 1 Build 1 point 53 months ago

the asus extreme vi has a PLX chip - so PCIE 3.0 are 8x/16/8x/8x

Derpmaster112 1 point 53 months ago

Sooo... the plx chip is giving you extra lanes? Is intergrated in the MOBO? Does Ranger/hero vii z97 have this feature to?

mojobear submitter 1 Build 1 point 53 months ago

i dont think the ranger has it...for the asus 1150 platform only the extreme vi has a plx chip

nhall.bob 1 point 53 months ago

Just made my top ten! +1

mojobear submitter 1 Build 1 point 53 months ago

thanks!

akula2 1 point 53 months ago

Perhaps you must be an extreme gamer, hence four cards? Never mind.

I miss Sapphire products, especially loved those Toxic models.

brelovix 1 point 53 months ago

Awesome.

Derpmaster112 1 point 53 months ago

every card is runing in 4x now... is that bottlenecking your gpu's?

mojobear submitter 1 Build 1 point 53 months ago

every card is running 8x or greater...plx chip on the mobo

kreesholva 1 Build 1 point 53 months ago

First of all, drool worthy build! Second, how did you get your Razer Blackwidow Ultimate 2014 Stealth Edition to be blue? Aren't they green? +1

mojobear submitter 1 Build 2 points 53 months ago

oh good eye! i didnt even notice. it was the older version of the ultimate stealth...from 2012 or 2013???

kreesholva 1 Build 1 point 53 months ago

Ohh, I see. Yeah, the older versions did have the blue back-light, which I like a lot better than the green.

mojobear submitter 1 Build 1 point 53 months ago

totally agreed. green is an all or nothing color :|

xolot1 1 Build 1 point 53 months ago

Hey guy. great job guy. do us a favor though, post more pics when you get a chance to make us drool more, thanks. +1 guy

mojobear submitter 1 Build 1 point 53 months ago

okay will do once I get a nice camera and get rid of the accumulated dust

Acoyatl 1 point 53 months ago

Sorry to bother you, but how is the keyboard holding up? Interested in it and was hoping for a second opinion on it.

mojobear submitter 1 Build 1 point 53 months ago

No worries! Its holding up very well actually. The stealth is very nice :) Let me know if there was any specifics u wanted to know about

Acoyatl 1 point 53 months ago

Only one question, is there anything you hate about it?

mojobear submitter 1 Build 1 point 42 months ago

Heat :D

mojobear submitter 1 Build 1 point 42 months ago

Hey sorry havent frequented this website in a long time LOL - keyboard is still holding up very well!

Noising 1 point 53 months ago

What case is that?

RRRilind 1 point 52 months ago
shab 3 Builds 1 point 52 months ago

Does it run League of Legends and Minecraft?

mojobear submitter 1 Build 1 point 42 months ago

No.It fails utterly

M3RICA_ 1 point 51 months ago

+1, nice photos.

Do you plan on joining team Green anytime soon? The 980 ti/990 is coming out very soon, and 3/4 of those in SLI would be beast. If you are, I'll buy tickets to the show. Thanks for the build.

MLGComputers 1 Build 1 point 49 months ago

No way on a 600w PSU....

Speevesx101 1 point 47 months ago

Your system makes me want to go curl up in a corner and cry over how much your electric bill is gonna cost after one gaming session....

mojobear submitter 1 Build 1 point 42 months ago

Its actually not so bad :)

Since I got this build all set up electricity maybe went up 30% (aka 10-15 dollars per month), but there was also a price hike on the electricity over that period as well

StalwartJarl607 1 point 46 months ago

Overclocking a 4770K? You sir are a VERY brave man.

mojobear submitter 1 Build 1 point 42 months ago

delidded as well!

OutsideLV 1 point 44 months ago

Heyy there! Do you still have this amazing rig?

mojobear submitter 1 Build 1 point 42 months ago

Hey yes I do! waiting for the next gen after Furyx to upgrade the GPUs. For now it runs pretty much all games @ 7680 x 1440 :D

JR3538 1 point 44 months ago

What monitor stand do u use

Bryton 1 Build 1 point 44 months ago

Good build! And one more thing.....can you let be borrow this in the winter? I sure won't freeze...at all!!! lol

cmulcahy0115 1 Build 1 point 43 months ago

This thing is insane :)

mojobear submitter 1 Build 2 points 42 months ago

:) it was a gradual build up over the years

Smirkio 1 point 42 months ago

How on motherf*cking Earth did you make enough spare money to build this behemoth?

mojobear submitter 1 Build 1 point 42 months ago

i didnt make all the purchases at once. was a gradual build up of parts over 2013-2014

CWR 1 Build 1 point 40 months ago

Over on future mark.com they're rating the R9 295x2 as number 1 overall - time to upgrade? How's the Elysium holding up?

Kiyosen 1 point 39 months ago

now just add the new Radion FURY X graphics card and this will be heaven D:

mrwilson2002 1 point 38 months ago

sorry to dig up a old thread, but I am also building a gaming pc and have a question. I have 3x 4k monitors. I currently have 3x r9 290x's. As I am sure you already know, these gpu's only have 1 dp out. If i run my 3 cards in xfire can i just use the dp out on each card to power each monitor or do all the connections need to come from the primary (top card)?

Thanks for any insight you can provide. This is my first build.

mojobear submitter 1 Build 1 point 37 months ago

Hey sorry I dont frequent this website as much anymore. You can run 3 4K monitors using each DP, one for each 290x, but you will NOT be able to run eyefinity.

cobbleking 1 point 26 months ago

A little question: why in the actual **** do you need 12 5 1/4 inch bays?

skyrise 1 Build 1 point 8 months ago

Glorious!

Zveir 9 Builds -5 points 53 months ago

3 $600 dollar 120hz monitors? What the hell is so amazing about them that would warrant that price? It's not even IPS. The Asus or BenQ models would've sufficed easily.

mojobear submitter 1 Build 2 points 53 months ago

these were purchased waaaayyyy back...about 2 years i want to say when I was running gtx 590s

Zveir 9 Builds -7 points 53 months ago

Ahhhh. Well I'd probably upgrade them, tbh they don't look to great to me :L

mojobear submitter 1 Build 2 points 53 months ago

i admit i do have some buyers remorse :D they are debezelled now so look better in eyefinity

camdato -6 points 53 months ago

WTF.... OVERKILL lol

[comment deleted]
Speevesx101 2 points 47 months ago

only 24-way Titans can run that....ON LOW GRAPHICS!!

Penguintheman 1 Build 1 point 34 months ago

Lol
