Description

added new pictures, got a new desk and cleaned up the cables

A little backstory before I start, this is actually the first time I built a computer and I actually surprised myself because I didn't even believe that I would build a computer. I actually have a Macbook Air 2013 which was originally intended for college only. I didn't want any distractions such as games so the Macbook was perfect for me. Fast forward a few years and I have graduated college and can't play that many games on my Macbook... I was half joking with my friends that I would build a pc and then somehow I caught myself looking at sales and ended buying some stuff and jumped down the rabbit hole and bought more and more... and here I am today.

I was only playing League of Legends for awhile since that was one of the few games that worked on a Mac. For League of Legends, you technically don't need high specs for that game so it was whatever. Then Rocket League was finally released for the Mac and boy was that horrible. I was playing at 30fps on the lowest setting for Rocket League. It was bad to the point that my friend said he won't play rocket league with me until I got a new computer. Hence this build.

Since I'm not a huge gamer and don't intend to play any high intensive games, I set my budget at $800 because I really didn't need the high-end stuff if I was just going to play League of Legends and Rocket League. The only other game I would venture into was Overwatch maybe.

Overall, I had fun building this computer for the first time and now is suffering from withdrawals and want to build another one even though I don't need to... Anyway if you read all of this, Kudos to you! fist pound ~fa la la la la ~

**edited: I did end up adding exhaust fans to my build later on just for the heck of it since the air 240 has a great airflow design and it looks nice with white exhaust fans in the back x] I'll add pictures later

Part Reviews

CPU

For the CPU, I was originally going for the i5-6600k since I didn't really need an i7 since I wasn't planning to do any video editing or high intensive games. Then I realized that the Mobo I purchased wasn't one that can overclock so I downgraded to the i5-6500 instead. I kind of glad that I did because I did save a few buck and I didn't even know how to overclock anyway so I was happy with my decision. I actually got it for sale for only $174 at monoprice but with tax, it went up to $191, which was still cheaper than MRSP.

CPU Cooler

For the CPU cooler, I had to get something that fits the Cosair Air 240 and decided to go with Cryorig because it fits the case and color scheme I was going with. It works like it should have and looks amazing

Motherboard

The MSI Mortar MIcroAtx had everything I needed with extra upgradeable for the rams if I ever need more rams. Love the fact that the gpu slot on this mobo was steel plated for extra strength. Everything is labeled out on the Mobo for an easy installation. It telels you which RAM Slots you should be using if you're just going with a 2 sticks configurations etc. Another good thing about this Mobo is the EZ Dedug LED on the right side. It tells you what was installed incorrectly so I can easily fix it but it's only for the CPU/RAMs/GPU but I think those are the important thing here anyway.

The only con is that it only can only handle 2 fans so if i wanted more, I would need to get a fan splitter.

Memory

For Rams, I just went with whatever was on sale. Everyone told me that 16gb is the new norm and these Team Dark Rams were on sale for $55 which was the lowest I saw for any 16gb rams. I actually got the DDR-2400 version but couldn't find it on PCpartpicker.

Storage

For storage, I went with a 240gb OCZ trion SSD which was enough for me since I had the same memory on my Macbook and didn't even got near using up all that memory. If I ever needed more memory, I'll just wait for a Black Friday sale or something. It boots fast and works perfectly

Video Card

GPU, I went with the Gigabyte GeForce GTX 1060 and it handled everything I threw at it (just LoL and rocket league) Like I said earlier, I'm not going to play any high intensive game so this GPU was in the right price point for me and in my budget. It was on sale on Amazon for $249 with a $20 rebate and I had a Amazon giftcard that covered the tax so I only paid $229 for the GPU :D

Case

It was love at first sight! Loved the color scheme and needed something small since I had a tiny desk. This fits just right and was really easy to build in for a first timer. The dual chambers make cable management a breeze! The only con I could think of is the filmy plastic cover that it came with. It scratches easily along with the window panel. My GPU cables is pressing against the window panel and is leaving some marks behind which isn't the best but I'll live with it.

Power Supply

It works! 650W may be more than I needed but it was on sale and that's why I got it. Love the fact that it came with all black cable and none of those ugly mustard cables. The only con I have for this psu is that it is kind of loud and wished it was quieter

Wireless Network Adapter

It works as it should have! I don't have much problem with it but I do get random ping spike only when I play league sometimes...

Been lagging a lot lately so taking a star away

Case Fan

IT HAS LED IN ITT AND IS PRETTTY. Even though I got the quiet series, I still think it was a bit loud for me but oh well, it looks nice

**edit, giving the star back to this fans. I thought the fans were loud but it was actually coming from the PSU Lol

very nice build! Just ordered an Air 240 from the lightning deals on Amazon so I'm excited to build in the case soon! Just a quick question, what kind of keyboard is that? Looks super clean & retro.

Oh wow nice deal! Even though the white one was just $3 cheaper than what I got it for, the black case was a good deal.

Which color did you end up getting then?

I ended up getting the white one :D I already have a black case so I wanted to switch things up! Both of them look great though

This is the perfect build for me! Thank you! I live in Greece though and the prices are a bit higher but it's still a build that is going to last me for at least 3 years.

I got the decal on Amazon, https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B010Q483LM/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

The only thing was that it comes with a heart as well but it didn't fit the case x] so I just cut the heart out and stuck it on something else

I keep coming back to this case when conceptualizing my future build : ) . Did you have any trouble getting your hands in there or in the back of the mobo to reach anything?

good stuff. Thanks for the share!

  • 2 points

I didn't have any problems at all with this case, but then again, I have small hands. Even though it's smaller than the 540, I felt like there were ton of rooms and was really easy to build in it.

This looks amazing! I'm thinking of building something similar. In your pictures, it looks like you have white cables for the motherboard and for the GPU. Did these come with your PSU or did you have to order those separately?

  • 2 points

I had to buy them separately. I found these at Fry's for 5.99 - 7.99. They're not full length cables but extension cables. They have other colors as well such as red, blue and green depending on what color scheme you're going for. If you don't live near a local Fry's, you can check out cablemod but they're going to be pricier

Going to buy that mobo. Why you chooses ram with 3000mhz when mobo supports only 3000?

  • 1 point

Mobo only supports 2133mhz ram but the ones I bought were actually 2400mhz just because they were on sale for $55. It was the cheapest I ever seen for 16gb rams so I bought it. I couldn't find the correct one on pcpartpicker so that's why I picked the 3000mhz ones.

The mobo is excellent, I just wished it had more fans headers

I like your PC build. How does Rocket League run? That's basically what my main goal is for my PC. Do you run it at the highest settings?

Sorry for the reallly late reply. Rocket league runs smoothly on this PC. I'm getting about 120+ fps on this game with max setting on Rocket league.

I'm not sure if you can turn off the mobo red led/haven't tried yet, BUT it's not that noticeable. I forget that they're there sometimes. They're on the 4 corners of the mobo and the 2 corners near the i/o are barely noticeable. The bottom one is out of view because of my graphic card. The only one noticeable would probably be the bottom right?

Bottom right: The most noticeable one https://i.gyazo.com/e280c70ef16ec1c7935d717f15aa2d3a.png (excuse my window, I haven't cleaned it after installing the leds)

Top Right: Reflects on the grommets but barely noticeable https://i.gyazo.com/30865ec0186c2a6ae5f41c81d01817f1.png

Bottom left: only noticeable if you looked under the gpu https://i.gyazo.com/caca185f5d5a1fb047acdcae38608b91.png

Top left: can't really see the red led unless you're looking at the top of the case through the filters https://i.gyazo.com/4c41e9b13061bcc206fb35245e221850.png

Just realized that the led might be barely noticeable because of my led strips. When the led strips are off, the red led are a bit brighter. Once again, the bottom right is the most noticeable
