Build

Black & White Ryzen PC

by ernest_vanilla

Description

Video of the build process: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PblKS9hHfpU&

GPU backplate tutorial that I used: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MBwfBCW9qZU&

I'm a Computer Science / Statistics Student who's interning as a web developer for the year. A few months back, I decided to build my own computer because I suddenly got obsessed over all the tech in the market. After months of saving, researching and gettin HYPED I finally bought all my parts around the time of black Friday. I got all my parts (except the RAM ;-;) on sale so I feel good.

I love to multitask so I went with a Ryzen 5 1600, the cpu value KING of 2017 :D Upgrading the resolution to 1440p is a dream (let alone 2 screens!! + the tiny bezels!!). I meant to get matching screens, but after purchasing the Asus monitor I found the Lenovo screen for MUCH cheaper so I was willing to deal with it. Coding never felt so good =u=

People kept recommending a GTX 1070 for 1440p gaming, but a GTX 1060 at nearly $200 cheaper can handle most games over 60fps at 1440p. I only game occasionally so it works for me.

Moving on to the theme, I initially was going for an all value/performance no style box under the desk, but after subscribing to techtubers... I couldn't resist. I looked at many builds and thought.. damn, white looks awesome! To make the white pop I also wanted to add a good amount of black to REALLY up the contrast :D I found an easy tutorial on how to make your own back plate and went through with it. I also used black matte vinyl tape to line the edges of the S340 Elite. It's a really popular case so I wanted to make it a little more personal.

Opting to use Water cooling is just for aesthetics while making the PC nice and quiet (: I switched the included fans with the case fans from the S340 because I like the color better. I don't care much for any micro-performance losses.

.

All in all I'm really happy with the whole setup. I have my Ryzen 5 1600 overclocked to 3.9 at 1.375V. RAM runs at 3000Mhz as stated. I also want to try to overclock both monitors to 75Hz as I've heard it's doable. I also spent days making a video of the build using this free program I discovered called Davinci Resolve. It was my first big editing project and I am simply amazed by the editing software and ease-of-use. Anyways, i'm too much yap yap, hope yall have a happy new year! (:

+1 Great attention to detail man. Haven't seen many white builds that came together quite like yours. Good on ya mate!

ernest_vanilla submitter 1 Build 1 point 15 months ago

Thanks!! I'm glad you like it

Ali3nDubst3p 1 Build 2 points 15 months ago

quite a nice result for a monochrome style build. most of these white out/blackout/gunmetal builds end up looking like they pick whatever hardware is the color they want and that's the end of it, nobody really does anything extra to complete the theme.

i like that you put in the extra effort to add personal customizations to your gpu and case to make the theme feel more like an actual goal and not just a color filter applied to a parts list

ernest_vanilla submitter 1 Build 3 points 15 months ago

I know exactly what you mean! I've noticed people get over excited for parts just cuz of the flat color and the final product doesn't look bad, but it's exactly as you put it in your last paragraph. That's partly why I wanted to make mine a little bit different. I appreciate the insight

OfficialP90 1 Build 4 points 15 months ago

This rig not only looks beautiful on the inside, it's got a cool, little touch on the outside. Most notably, the portal guy going from one display to another. +1 from me :)

ernest_vanilla submitter 1 Build 2 points 15 months ago

Extra points to you for noticing these details (:

ernest_vanilla submitter 1 Build 2 points 15 months ago

Yeah the backplate ended up looking better than I expected xD cheers!

supermattdab0ss 1 Build 1 point 15 months ago

Where did you get that backplate?

ernest_vanilla submitter 1 Build 1 point 15 months ago

I made the backplate using a sheet of acrylic, some vinyl tape, and spray paint. You can either see it on my build video or the tutorial that I linked in the top of the description (:

supermattdab0ss 1 Build 1 point 15 months ago

Cool. Thanks!

ernest_vanilla submitter 1 Build 1 point 15 months ago

np!

bwebster 1 Build 1 point 15 months ago

Nice clean build. Always a fan of white themes done well. Almost couldn't give you +1 because of the Leafs blanket though lol

ernest_vanilla submitter 1 Build 1 point 15 months ago

Thanks! You can rest easy, that bed sheet was a gift

CodyMason 1 point 15 months ago

Did you need a mounting adaptor for your cpu cooler to work with your motherboard

ernest_vanilla submitter 1 Build 1 point 15 months ago

Nope, it came compatible out of the box

JudahRoars 1 Build 1 point 15 months ago

Clean +1. Good job!

ernest_vanilla submitter 1 Build 1 point 15 months ago

thanks, that's what i was going for :D

sorepatrol68 1 point 15 months ago

Awesome build! How's the tesoro keyboard? I really wanted that keyboard as well but still debating.

ernest_vanilla submitter 1 Build 1 point 15 months ago

It's great, I honestly love it! I got the red switches and it's fairly quieter than most mechanical keyboards because of the reduced travel. Did a lot of research and I mean, i'm typing with it right now after months and I'm still 100% satisfied with the purchase.

ernest_vanilla submitter 1 Build 1 point 15 months ago

Haha those stubborn cables. I actually came across your build a few months back what a coincidence :0 I found the title hilarious lmao. But yeah glad you like it and I love my internship so far, thanks

Codywalker16 1 Build 1 point 15 months ago

Haha that's awesome! Like I said, yours is nice and clean (how I wanted mine) and I couldnt get it to workout! lol. But oh well. Love the build man and keep it up!

97thAcolyte 1 point 15 months ago

This looks amazing! So gorgeous and super clean lines. :D +1 for Gudetama. ;)

ernest_vanilla submitter 1 Build 2 points 15 months ago

Thanks man! Gudetama always makes an appearance in my videos xD

NeatFreak 1 Build 1 point 15 months ago

I have a very similar build to this, as somebody with a fellow dual 1060, good call on getting a backplate for it, really makes it pop.

ernest_vanilla submitter 1 Build 1 point 15 months ago

Yeah we really do have similar looking builds! You even put the case fans for intake lool. I felt the same way when i considered getting the dual 1060... it looks so nice but it really needed a backplate.

ernest_vanilla submitter 1 Build 1 point 15 months ago

Yeah i keep telling myself i should switch to linux. My internship is a bit busy atm so i'm scared the learning curve will slow me down. When i come back to school for my final year, i'm definitely gonna use linux :)

ernest_vanilla submitter 1 Build 1 point 15 months ago

wchamby 1 point 15 months ago

Really enjoy this build! At first I was confused on the choice of RAM. But then I looked closer and that it matches perfectly with the mobo. The consistency in this build is so insane! Could you please link the DIY backplate tutorial :)

ernest_vanilla submitter 1 Build 3 points 15 months ago

TY and yeah!! I meant to get white RAM but HOLY I just kept staring hoping the price would go down, next thing i knew the price had already doubled ): So I went with the cheapest 3000Mhz RAM since I thought, you know what the mobo has some grey/silver and then it ended up working (:

Here's the link for the tutorial, cheers! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MBwfBCW9qZU&

Eibe 1 Build 1 point 15 months ago

Sleek and elegant. Love it.

ernest_vanilla submitter 1 Build 1 point 15 months ago

Thanks man, appreciate it

TruVueTech 3 Builds 1 point 15 months ago

i like this build in terms of the hardware packed into it and the attention to detail with the cables and AIO hoses, however to me there is just a tad bit too much white in the build itself. i would have chosen the same parts except i would have gone with a black version of the Elite so that i got a bit more contrast from the white items in the build. however that is my opinion, it is still a very nice build and i do agree that this build deserved the feature that it got.

ernest_vanilla submitter 1 Build 1 point 15 months ago

Thanks for the feedback! I initially was actually gonna get the black S340, but ironically I went with the white for the contrast xD I agree it would make the white components pop more (white ram would be a must!) but I would also lose contrast on the black, like the tubes, ssd and headphones. But nonetheless it was a hard choice between the two

TruVueTech 3 Builds 1 point 15 months ago

that s true, you win some you lose some in terms of the contrast of the build's aesthetics. that being said it turned out excellent.

ernest_vanilla submitter 1 Build 1 point 15 months ago

Yeah it was a give or take. Either would have looked elegant. I asked my gf what she likes more, and that's what ultimately tipped the balance lol. Over time the white grew on me

TruVueTech 3 Builds 1 point 15 months ago

yeah, you cant really ignore that, you're not really the only one that sees it on a daily basis.

gogo809 3 Builds 1 point 15 months ago

Love that cooler in this build! Looks great. Are you seeing reasonable temps in that case? Any thermal throttling.

ernest_vanilla submitter 1 Build 1 point 15 months ago

Thanks man! I've stress tested it for hours on end and no thermal throttling :D It would depend on your overclock and silicon lottery, but I have mine at 3.9GHz at 1.375V and the max it gets to is 70 degrees. I tried going for that 4.0 barrier, but i needed a ridiculous voltage and higher temps to get there xD so I said nahh. Though if you're wondering about the performance of the case, I've done my research and the S340 is choked by the front panel. The airflow isn't ideal but it will be fine for single GPU set ups, which are like 95% of builds... or you know, just slap on more/better fans (:

johnsmith124 1 point 15 months ago

That is one clean lean mean gaming machine!!! +1

ernest_vanilla submitter 1 Build 2 points 15 months ago

ernest_vanilla submitter 1 Build 2 points 15 months ago

We practically have the same computer xD

Jesso2k 8 Builds 1 point 15 months ago

THIS GUY PUCKS!

I have the same headphones, they felt a little tight around the ears so I got some Brainwavz earcups that made them feel a lot more comfortable.

Congrats on the feature.

ernest_vanilla submitter 1 Build 1 point 15 months ago

Is that a silicon valley reference? LOL That's cool, I definitely thought of getting earcups and a DAC in the future as an audio upgrade. Thanks man :D

oneflygtiguy 5 Builds 1 point 15 months ago

ernest_vanilla submitter 1 Build 1 point 15 months ago

Back in my day we could only see black and white

A very nice black and white build, glad to see someone going away from rgb.

great way to use the S340 e-1337, putting vinyl tape around cases might be a trend now because of you.

+1

ernest_vanilla submitter 1 Build 1 point 15 months ago

Oh man if this started a trend I'd be so honored to have started it xD Thank you

keyofnight 1 Build 1 point 15 months ago

Your build came out really nice. I might have to step my black and white game up. :)

ernest_vanilla submitter 1 Build 2 points 15 months ago

I'm rooting for ya :D

Paulochromis 1 point 15 months ago

Very nice!! Suspect the PSU shroud might look better without the SSD caddies.

ernest_vanilla submitter 1 Build 1 point 15 months ago

You might have a point.. might try and remove them

Awesome build.

Awesome Gundams collection.

Simply Gorgeous +1 (wish +2 was possible). I too am working on the white/black aesthetic, but also being a penny-pincher makes it hard to do all the things... Thanks for posting, and the detail/background in your post :-D

ernest_vanilla submitter 1 Build 1 point 15 months ago

Appreciate it! Yeah I feel you, definitely coulda saved a bit more going without a theme, but man it's just so satisfying to have it complete next to you... Good luck!

Haha! That book was the perfect size to be your monitor stand.

ernest_vanilla submitter 1 Build 1 point 15 months ago

It actually blew my mind when I put it there. Perfect width/length and most importantly, HEIGHT. It's a textbook I don't use anymore. From my desk all you see is "Scientific Computing" LOL

Warlord1981 1 Build 1 point 15 months ago

Very nice build! How did you make thte vertical NZXT logo inside the case black?

ernest_vanilla submitter 1 Build 2 points 15 months ago

All I did was color it in with a black marker xD worked quite well

Ticitrph 1 point 15 months ago

Copied the build over and pcpartpicker said that it might require external parts to connect the water cooling to the mother board, is that safe to ignore or did I forget to grab a part?

ernest_vanilla submitter 1 Build 1 point 15 months ago

yeah it's safe to ignore, the cooler came with a compatible bracket right out of the box. If not I'm pretty certain you can call deepcool and they'll provide one.

Ticitrph 1 point 13 months ago

k thanks man, appreciate it

morestyles2000 1 point 15 months ago

looks awesome man.. well done. :D

ernest_vanilla submitter 1 Build 1 point 15 months ago

thanks dude!

badAtUserNames 1 point 14 months ago

Wow! This looks great, and super similar to the build I am making lol! I also wanted to focus on a white build with more of a blue contrast and it seems there isn't a ton of options for white builds so people will end up with similar tech haha, glad you got yours done though! I am currently waiting for graphics card prices to fall as that is the last thing I need (also looking at the Asus Dual 1060, how is it holding up?)

ernest_vanilla submitter 1 Build 3 points 14 months ago

Ayyyy thanks man! Great to hear you're building your very own white build :D it's super hype. Yeah not a lot of options for white parts hehe. The Asus dual was one of the only options for me.. but yeah I love it and it's working fine as it should. The current batches of Dual Cards don't spin the fan until it needs to, so it's nice and quiet while browsing. When it spins up it has sort of a higher pitch wirr compared to other cards. I haven't tried overclocking it cuz to be frank, I don't play that many games xD let alone graphically intensive ones. Which is why i got a 1060 for 1440p gaming. Good luck with the prices man, hope you don't have to wait too long (ram/gpu market is bonkers rn)

seanthewan 1 point 14 months ago

I'm kind of a noob but I bought tis motherboard and it is in the mailand do you need a wifi card to set it up

ernest_vanilla submitter 1 Build 1 point 14 months ago

This motherboard can take a wired ethernet connection, but there's no built in wifi. So yes, you'll have to get a separate wifi card if you want wireless internet.

seanthewan 0 points 14 months ago

Ok where do you recommend getting one

ernest_vanilla submitter 1 Build 1 point 14 months ago

I'm not sure, I haven't done the research since I prefer a wired connection. Just google it

asteroid-god 1 Build 1 point 11 months ago

What is the thing you have your headphones sitting on attached to your build?

ernest_vanilla submitter 1 Build 2 points 10 months ago

It's a magnetic 'puck' that came with the case. It's meant to hold a VR headset and to wind up the long wire that comes with it.

Great build! Im a sucker for black and white builds. btw did you come across any problems installing the liquid cooler on the motherboard? My part list comes up with a compatibility note telling me that the Cooler may require a separately available mounting adapter to fit the mobo. Thanks.

ernest_vanilla submitter 1 Build 1 point 10 months ago

glad you like it! I'm a sucker for them too (: The cooler came with the adapter mount as far as I'm concerned.

No, thank you!

ernest_vanilla submitter 1 Build 1 point 4 months ago

Parts were damaged in shipping, unfortunately, can't get a refund. CPU memory channels dead and GPU board got dented. So, no. Have to wait until I get more money.

ernest_vanilla submitter 1 Build 1 point 1 month ago

Oh man that sucks. They should have refunded you... Good luck next time

ernest_vanilla submitter 1 Build 1 point 10 months ago

It came with it in the package, so you should be safe :D

connorjb 1 point 10 months ago

did you need an adapter for the cpu block for the am4 mother board?

ernest_vanilla submitter 1 Build 1 point 4 months ago

Thanks :) sorry for the late reply! They're pulling

Hi, currently building a pc and need help. Were you able to hit 3200mhz or 3000mhz with this set of memory if not what was the highest speed you got a stable OC thanks in advance.

Konradius05 1 point 7 months ago

That is so creepy,

I used same case, same cpu, same video card, and my Build looks very similar

plzDonateAgame 1 point 7 months ago

Could have gotten an Ultrawide monitor but still clean asf +1

ernest_vanilla submitter 1 Build 2 points 4 months ago

Ayy thanks! I thought about it, but it's easier to multitask and juggle more windows with 2 monitors. Could full screen video calls and videos on separate screens, so I ended up getting 2 monitors instead.

plzDonateAgame 1 point 4 months ago

That's smart good choice.

Little_ 1 point 6 months ago

The GPU backplate looks amazing, good photos.

ernest_vanilla submitter 1 Build 1 point 4 months ago

Thanks! Wanted to make it personal. I think the reason it got featured was due to the photos.

Willnek 1 point 6 months ago

Hi, I am planning on getting the same motherboard with the same case. Were there enough internal i/o ports for the ports on the front of the case? I also gave me an idea with the cable mod extensions. Love what you did with the tape it makes it way more personal. +1

ernest_vanilla submitter 1 Build 1 point 4 months ago

Thanks man :D appreciate it! It's been a while since I built it, but I'm pretty sure there was enough.

Willnek 1 point 4 months ago

Thanks!

CallMeZeo 1 Build 1 point 5 months ago

Hey man, I'm not sure if pcpartpicker lists the newer versions of the aio you're using that come with amd mounting brackets in the box. The previous ones didn't come with amd brackets in the box and you would've had to buy separate ones. Just making sure because I'm building a black blue and white amd build with this specific cooler.

ernest_vanilla submitter 1 Build 1 point 4 months ago

Hey! sorry for the late reply. The amd mounting bracket did come with the aio cooler. If anything, you can call them to make sure, or just ask one to be sent

CallMeZeo 1 Build 1 point 4 months ago

It's alright but I've decided on a Corsair H100i instead. I got a bigger budget from $2000 to $3000 so I decided to go with the high-end stuff. This cooler is still awesome though. Just like your build!

maddog62 1 Build 1 point 5 months ago

I had a B&W Rysen 2 build in mind before seeing your build. Only diff is that I'm not getting a water cooler. Thank you!

tRustyDose 1 point 4 months ago

First, and foremost...beautiful rig, and job. I’m about to start my very own first build, and was very highly considering your exact setup (if you don’t mind). Is/Are there any parts that you would choose over the parts currently in this build?

Glad you like it (:
I haven't been following up with computer parts in the recent months, but I just remember that RAM was so damn expensive at the time i bought it. If prices were reasonable I would have gotten 16gb rather than 8gb. Though tbh, I've been perfectly fine with 8gb..... just would feel good to have 16 LOL

I really like the backplate you did really well on that +1 Also I really like the parts you chose since I have a very similar build with a gtx 1060 ryzen 5

I got it from an anime convention 2 years ago. You can search Gudetama online and you'll find a bunch of products
