Description

I mainly use this rig for CAD, streaming, and video editing, extremely quiet fans, couldn't even believe it, these fans were much quieter than the noctua one that came with the cpu cooler.

Very Nice! This will always be hardly working, because no matter what you throw at it, it will destroy it with ease!

I think I did alright, I'm sure I could have saved a few dollars on the storage

How is the SSD going? I heard that 730 series SSD's are quite zippy.

Also, isn't the MSI motherboard you included for gaming, and since it's Z97 are you going to overclock the Xeon?

Thanks :D

  • 2 points

Well I would have gone with an h97 or something similar but they were god awfully ugly or too flashy with their super cool anodized vrm heatsinks, this one is simple and pretty, works perfectly fine and has all the features I need, the ssd is amazing, not the fastest but definitely the most reliable in my opinion.

Ahh, I really need to think before I post something...

Now really looking that mobo does go really nicely with your other components.

Might be mistaken.. But from what I've seen the Xeon isn't made to be Overclocked like say a i5 4690K would be....

  • 2 points

The Xeon can be overclocked, but if you did you would go up around 200MHz before hitting the roof. That's why they are generally not overclocked.

  • 2 points

I'm pretty sure I cannot, all the voltages are locked in the overclocking options in the uefi

  • 2 points

Thanks for the clarification....

  • 1 point

You cannot overclock Xeons. They are locked.

  • 1 point

Well they do have this boost thing...It only take it up by like .2 MHz tho...

  • 1 point

E5-1xxx Xeons can be overclocked. AFAIK, E3 and E7 and E5-2xxx Xeons can't, but my personal build is proof the E5-1xxx CPUs are unlocked. (for sure V1 and V2)

Great build! I love Corsair cases. That fan controller looks really nice, it looks like it was made for the case almost.

Total newb question but what's the installation like for a fan controller? Do you just plug it into the MoBo or plug the fans directly into the controller?

  • 2 points

Two molex connectors straight from the psu and then there are 6 fan connectors you connect your fans to.

How's that Xeon working for you, any regret?

I imagine it is.

Do you ever plan to go to the X99 platform if needed?

Also if I may ask what do you do CAD for- work, school? Just curious!

Sexy build.

Probably not, didn't feel like I needed it. Teaching myself a little bit of basic 3d modelling

I just finally decided to google CAD- and wow.. How's it going for you?

Looks like a lot of functions, and a lot of buttons. I'd probably mess something up.

Got any things you've made in it so far?

Was getting 4x4 ram worth it for the color? It costs like $35 more and you cannot expand to 32 (not that it's needed) otherwise +1

Then I'll buy 32gb when it's needed :P

Nice Build!

What CAD software do you run? Do you do complex 3D Modeling? How is the R9 390 handling the 3D if you do. Considering a Similar Build with a X99 Board and i7, Trying to Decide R9 or GTX and there's not a lot of info on these GPU and CAD operation but an Overpriced Quadro is out of the question.

  • 1 point

I haven't made anything too complex yet but it has been tearing through everything fast as hell

Awesome! But I need an opinion from some people, does anyone think that ddr4 will matter in the future? Or will it stay pretty much like ddr3... There's really no difference XD ( except for the mhz )

  • 1 point

There just aren't many things optimized to run at highly clocked ram speeds yet

Is 650W enough for your r9 390? no problems so far?

  • 1 point

Hey I'd like to ask how much much space you had in between the end of your gpu and the case.

  • 1 point

Like 4 to 5 inches

  • 1 point

With the fans?

  • 1 point

ohh, theres about an inch exactly, just measured

  • 1 point

Hey nice build man! :) Cool to see a Xeon. I hear that Xeons require a different chipset now (though Puget systems seems to have had luck installing them in X99 boards), was this different with the Z97 boards?

  • 2 points

It generally depends on the socket type and if the chipset will support it. The e3s of this gen will work on z97 h97 etc since they are completely compatible

The HP12 fans are more helpful on intake cause the stock dust filter chokes airflow fans by quite a bit. The HF12s can work on the Noctua cooler cause the fin stack on that cooler isn't dense. I'd move the HP12s to the front, get another HP12 for the front, and move 2 HF12s on the Noctua cooler. You'd have a spare HF12 leftover in case one goes bad.

I'm curious about your choice of a processor - Xeon E3-1276 V3. Intel advertises this processor for use in entry level servers. Further, it has an on-die integrated graphics controller. It does not appear you are taking advantage of this functionality because you bought a separate video card. Why did you buy a server processor? Why did you buy a processor with an integrated graphics controller and a separate high end video card?
