Description

My first build!

Needless to say, it was a challenge, but largely thanks to this site (and reddit, and YouTube), I was able to make it happen.

The only major snag I hit was, unfortunately, very early on -- the CPU cooler I really wanted to use (Thermaltake SpinQ) simply did not fit my mobo. Even though this site said it was compatible, I quickly found out that this is a part from 2009 and has no business being installed in a 2018 build. After a few failed attempts, bruised thumbs and ego gave way to reason and I filed a return w/ Amazon; fortunately, that was quick & easy.

I ended up finding the Enermax ETS at Fry's; their selection was pitiful, but I like the one I found anyway.

Other than that, cable management was a bit tricky w/ this case, especially for a first-timer, but I eventually ended up with a setup I feel works really well. There is PLENTY of airflow in the case (even with all my toys) and it just looks stunning.

Oh, and it absolutely kicks *** in the gaming department, which was the whole reason for the build. I've only been able to test GTA V & DOOM so far, but both are maxed out on the highest settings and this rig is holding nice 'n' steady in that buttery smooth sweet spot of 60 fps.

And on Wednesday, my new 27" Dell w/ G-Sync will arrive and I shall truly put some shizz to the test. (Never experienced 144hz before... I'm nervous...)

Thanks to anyone who's ever contributed to this community, PCMR, YouTube, etc... We salute you!!!

Shame you couldn't make the Spin-Q to work, those things look like warp drives lol +1

I know!! :-( And I looked into the "VT" version, which seemed to be the model that came out after the one I had, but that was also from like 2012 and it didn't explicitly say "LG1151" for compatibility, so I didn't bother.

(Also didn't want to wait any longer to assemble!)

Nice build man! Though I don't see an exhaust in ur pictures so I would maybe put at least one at the back and one at the top to improve your airflow/cooling. Other than that it's looking good.

I actually got it for free; I think it was from a pre-order... Must've been Borderlands 2 (for PS3), many moons ago.

Monitor arrived a day early! I immediately maxed out the settings in GTA V and was soon enjoying some buttery smooth gameplay. Amazing.

when I tell people I have the PG279Q which is 2560x1440p 165hz and G-Sync, they ask why I didn't just go 4k instead. I laugh, and go back to my monitor that's like butter for my eyeballs

I totally agree. 4k is great and all but the way current GPU and screen technologies are, it seems the performance/dollar spent ratio simply isn't there to justify it. if you don't care about response times or input lag maybe a nice shiny $1400 OLED tv might interest ppl tho lol

well as mentioned above, @MegaMcMarty and I run at 165hz and it surpasses even 144hz. Only thing better at 1440p would be 200hz but few monitors have that, and rarely come with the same size or specs.
