This is my first ever PC and build after 10 years of being a "Mac guy". After college I got a job in IT and ever since found myself needing a PC at home. I had the money so I figured I'd try my hand at a build. I knew going in that I wanted to go Intel + GTX and so naturally I was super excited to find that GPU and RAM prices are at an all-time high and Intel CPUs are bugged at the hardware level. Ultimately I threw caution to the wind and am really happy with how it turned out. I have not yet taken any steps at overclocking. I named it Wilson.

Part Reviews

No complaints, given the price was shortly after the new Coffee Lake chips retailed. I don't think I'll replace the chip unless I find a killer deal on i7 coffee lake after they fix the meltdown and spectre vulns. I didn't modify or overclock anything, just installed it and finished building and turned it on and it's at 4.1 GHz which seems pretty good compared to stock 3.6 GHz. In retrospect I wish I had waited and snagged the 8th Gen i7 when it was down to $313.

CPU Cooler

Easy to install assuming you are aware how the pump/hoses affect the use of a RAM slot.

Awesome board. Great aesthetics, bright RGBs, good audio. A little pricey for not offering onboard WiFi but again this was shortly after Coffee Lake launch and 370 boards had less options to choose from.

Looks, feels and operates extremely well. Hate the inflated price, but this is some sexy RAM.

It's fast but the price/performance vs other SSDs may make some other larger drives a better option. I wasn't put off by the $10 difference and "everyone" recommended Samsung for a quality SSD.

Used for Boot drive and some basic local storage needs. From power off to Desktop takes <3 seconds, and I <3 that stat. I'm glad I was convinced by the reviews which lead me to purchase the 960 NVMe instead of 2.5'' SSD + HDD combo.

Video Card

Everyone knows the story with the market and the prices for GPUs. I paid maybe $100 over MSRP for this but I feel okay with that given the other options for paying almost 2x MSRP for a 1080ti. I have been able to play every game I want on Ultra/max settings with my monitor set to 1440p @ 144hz but I don't know that the games I play are the most demanding. Games include Doom, CS:GO, Diablo 3, Battlefront II, Destiny 2.

The case is slick and good looking, perfect size for a desktop and offers a lot of connectivity and ease for cable-management. I don't like how the drive cages are so hard to get out and restrict access around the back/underside by the PSU and SATA connections.

Operating System

Saved a hundred bucks here. Re-used old Win7 key for free upgrade to legit Win10. Always Pro - no other way to use your computer if you know what you're doing.

This thing is awesome. Crystal clear, offers nice menu and built-in functionalities. G-Sync is pricey when looking for 1440p 160hz IPS but in the end was totally worth it.

Made the mistake of letting my wife hear the difference between MX Cherry switches and the Silent so I sprung for the MX Silent switches even tho the keyboard was a little over priced compared to some other RGB offerings.

Very comfortable, low-profile and no-nonsense. Enough buttons to aid in productivity but not so many buttons it's like a keyboard on the mouse. Oh and RGB.

Surprisingly big sound for such an inexpensive set. I was using these speakers from a Mac laptop before the PC was built and I was like 'ehh these are okay i guess' and then I plugged them into my PC after I built it and the sound was super full and clear. Would definitely recommend if you're looking for solid sonic quality without breaking the bank.

Amazing product. I don't know that I could have gotten through the build without it. There's some tools in here you'll look at and be like 'I'll never need this thing.' but just wait - you will and you'll be thankful you got this kit.

In the end I think I would have been fine with just the fans instead of the combo with the hue - I don't know that the HUE+ is really doing anything in my build but if I decide to add LED strips I think it will prove worth having.

Where did you get that GPU Backplate?

Why put the GPU in the second PCI-E lane instead of the top one?

limilkoonox submitter 1 Build 1 point 11 months ago

I didn't like the way the AIO hoses sat on/in-front-of the GPU (esp. before the backplate) and the overall look of the build seemed "top-heavy" with everything crammed at the top. Like a tough guy with big arm muscles but tiny little legs. I tried the lower slot and found it looks much better.

Also because it gives a better view of the LED backplate on the GPU to have it lower, but honestly I didn't have that reason when I first moved the GPU to the bottom slot.

Aren't you choking it for air at the bottom though? It's very close to the PSU shroud. Also, any air it is sucking up would be hot air that's emitted from the PSU, which is right underneath it, in this case. You might be able to flip the hoses up some and get them snug between the motherboard power connector to support them and keep them off the GPU backplate if you wanted to move it up.

Maybe technically yes but I haven't had any issues with what I'd consider "high" temps. So far I've played CS:GO for 3+ hours and Doom for 2+ hours (on different days) both on Ultra settings at 1440p but at no time did the GPU temp go over 70c. Though I'll admit I'm not sure where these games fall on the spectrum of high-temp-inducing games. Thanks for the suggestion. If cooling becomes an issue I may think harder about introducing more cool air into the case vs moving the GPU up.

Much thanks

Do you have more pictures with the rgb being white? Does the backplate change colour?
