Description

This build was an absolute pleasure. Unfortunately I can't build PC's for a living so this will have to do for a while xD. I had only one slight problem with the build and that was a HDD dead on arrival. Other than that I enjoyed every minute of building this! I decided to name it Kylo after realising the theme closely matches that of Kylo Ren from the new star wars!

The keyboard and disc drive were salvaged from my old build.

UPDATE a quick OC on the GPU's got me in the top 92% on Firestrike Extreme!! :D

Part Reviews

CPU

I7 6700k (@ 4.8GHz Stable) I have been planning on running simulations at home. I am an Aerospace student and I hope to be doing alot more computational dynamic simulations for my thesis so an I7 was definitely the right choice. I went with skylake mainly because it was the newest at the time of purchase (and writing this log) and I had seen good reviews on good ol' Youtube.

CPU Cooler

Corsair H100i GTX Honestly nothing really more than to achieve a higher/quieter over clock. ( And a little bit of bragging rights) Easy to install and worked straight away thankfully! I did however have trouble with the Link software.

Motherboard

Asus ROG Hero VIII Absolutely gorgeous motherboard with features I'm still not even sure about! Fantastic over clocking capabilities with a BIOS second to none. All round fantastic experience with this motherboard so far.

Memory

G.skill I was originally sticking to 8gbs but there was some money left in the budget when the critical parts were bought so I thought why not?

Storage

M.2 drive I had planned on getting an 850 EVO, but when I saw a comparison between NVMe, M.2 and SSD I knew I wanted more. After nearly having a heart attack seeing the NVMe prices I settled for a much more reasonable M.2. Very happy so far!!

Storage

Seagate Barracuda's I know Seagate has a good reputation and have used them for years. I bought two 2TB drives to put them in RAID 1 as I have recently been stung by a failed drive and lost alot of sentimental data. NEVER AGAIN!! Brilliant drives so far.

Video Card

EVGA 970 FTW+'s Brilliant cards so far. I was planning on sticking to one buuuuuut the budget has to stretch a little here and there. I still haven't gotten round to over clocking them yet but its still early days.

Case

The Corsair 750D Airflow. I knew I was going to overclock from the offset so I went with one of the best airflow optimised cases available this one also just so happens to be one of the biggest cases around without going overboard. I'm glad I got a big case as it was an absolute pleasure to work with. I'm looking into changing the stock af140's for the retail versions purely for the aesthetics.

Power Supply

EVGA G2 850W The 850W psu was actually shipped last minute. I originally had a 650w G2 but after buying a second graphics card and wanted to over clock both GPU's and the CPU I didnt think it would be a wise choice to pretty much max out my PSU. The 850W G2 very rarely has the fans on (Quiet...BONUS) I'm looking into custom braided cables/extensions because why the hell not?!

Operating System

Windows 10 Pro I got a good deal online for this. I genuinely have no idea what the differences are but hey anything with Pro in it has to be worth it.... Right?

my planned build is similar to yours, and btw did you experience micostutters or anything like that with sli?

NoobBuilder01 submitter 2 Builds 1 point 38 months ago

I have yet to experience any problems with the SLI setup YET being the operative word haha. Both cards seem to play nicely together :) Hope this helps

How is the M.2 ssd? Do you think I should stick with the regular 2.5" drive or get this? Thanks

NoobBuilder01 submitter 2 Builds 1 point 35 months ago

Sorry for the late reply man... Honestly I have not regretted this m.2 drive. It's honestly made the machine that much greater. Using it for the os only allows the machine to go from the bios screen pretty much straight to the desktop with very little delay in between. I would recommend to anyone to try these drives if possible. They are so noticeably fast that I feel, the price is justified. Again sorry for the late reply. Happy tweaking,

No problem :) Thx for the reply. SSD for life lol :)

How are the stock fans from the 750d ?

NoobBuilder01 submitter 2 Builds 1 point 12 months ago

Sorry dude I just got this. The fans were fine but dont really do much for the aesthetics so I’m changing them. Hope this helps

Under the monitor is a 7.1 surround sound system and to the right of the pc is a TV. I use it to watch films with the Mrs. :)
