Description

This is my first PC build!!!

I started this project as a home FreeBSD server for my FreeBSD development work. This is the reason behind the name "Beastie".

During my college days, back in 2007-08, I wanted to build an ultimate gaming machine to play GTA San Andreas. I am a huge fan of GTA series of games. I could not build one at that time due to various reasons (studies, job interviews, etc). Now after completing masters and securing job as a kernel developer, got some time and money to build one :)

So, this PC is used for playing games and for FreeBSD development work. Considering this, I chose parts as follows,

CPU: Intel Core i5 6600K. This was the top CPU on the market next to i7 6700K, 10 months back (I took some time to fully complete the build). I could not get i7 6700K due to shortage of supply from Intel.

Motherboard: Asus Z170I Pro-gaming. At first, I started this build keeping in mind mini-ITX form factor. So, most of the parts are compatible with Cooler master Elite 130 case. Then after purchasing graphics card changed my mind and got a new Micro ATX tower which is compatible with mini-ITX boards. This is the best board I found after researching about mini-ITX gaming boards and it supports DDR4.

Graphics card: NVIDIA GTX 1070 Founders Edition I was confused whether to get NVIDIA GTX 970 or 980. After few weeks of thinking, got to know that NVIDIA is releasing their new line of graphics cards and yah!! ordered 1070 on the launch day, June 10, 2016. As you may all know 1070 is getter than 980 Ti at around 970 price point.

RAM: Corsair Vengeance DDR4 8GBx2

HDD: 1 TB Western Digital, 250GB Western Digital drive (got this from office). I had quiet a few WD HDD earlier and they gave pretty good performance for me.

SSD: Samsung 850 Evo 250GB Got this for $84, pretty good reviews in Amazon.

Keyboard: Razer black widow tournament edition. Got this keyboard only for one reason, awesome mechanical click sound.

Mouse: Razer death adder chroma. Most comfortable mouse, I have ever used.

CPU Cooler: Corsair Hydro series H60 I went for liquid cooling, since I have future plans, for over clocking my i5 6600K.

Power supply: EVGA supernova 750 G2 80+ gold Nothing can beat EVGA in SMPS.

Chassis: Corsair Carbide SPEC-M2 This case accomdates mini-ITX boards and has nice side glass to look inside the internals.

OS: Microsoft Windows 10 64-bit, no choice than this for gaming. FreeBSD stable 10 releases for my FreeBSD development work.

Nice build. +1 Gawd, where are you? Over here in Australia a 1070 is ~$800 sooo about double the cheapest 970...

Why did you choose to have a mini ITX motherboard in a micro ATX case?

I am having difficulties with the EVGA 1070 FE. I have this same z170i board. Did you have to put in any special BIOS settings like ASPM or legacy vs secure boot etc?

Cannot get it working for the life of me, trying to figure out if it's the card. I somewhat doubt it because there are so many threads about 10 series cards having a 'black screen' at boot up etc.

In my case, it appears in Windows but has a generic error code 43 that I can't resolve.
