My first 7850k build, I did not have enough time to fully test, OC and explore the capabilities of this chip. I put it through some paces and have become a fan.
You can OC the processor and/or the GPU. The cooler I bought did not fit on the mini ITX mobo so I was kind of bummed about that.
I was able on stock to set the processor to 4.0 but this motherboard does not have a voltage adjustment in BIOS. It does it auto and overdoes it I think. In AMD overdrive I was able to reduce the voltage and it worked just fine. I could easily have gone higher but the temps were too high with the extremely crappy stock cooler.
I put the proc back to stock and bumped up the GPU to 1028 Mhz from 720. Got about a 25% increase in FSP on 3D Mark Skydiver. Still in the 30s but I thought that was very nice. The temps did not seem that affected by the increase in GPU frequency.
I only used the AMD overdrive thermal limit for temps as everything else was confusing and inaccurate. Get about 40 FPS on ultra for World of Tanks and 30 FPS on WoW on ultra settings. This would be perfectly playable if you just set shadows to low.
As far as HTPC purposes, it's overkill.
It seems like it's an overpriced jack of all trades, master of none chip, but it matches the i3 in processing power and blows it away on graphics. At similar price points, it now seems like a very worthy chip. I got it with the motherboard I wanted for $45 off combo.
Ram was cheap and easily set to 2400Mhz.
Power Supply is my go to favorite in the lower wattage if you can get away with non modular. It's a tier 2 unit for $34 free shipping. Less if it's on sale. With the cube type cases, wire management takes 3 minutes.
I wish there were more options for $15-$25 coolers for the minis.
Case: Love it. Not sure how i would like to have the fan blowing out if I were to use a water cooler though.
Becoming a fan. If you are thinking about an i3, think about this one instead.
Got as part of a combo. Good layout, USB 3.0, Sata III, some OC options (no ability to adjust voltage but it does it automatically). Don't use OC genie or live update. Ram easily set to 2400 Mhz. Con: hard to find a cooler for the cpu that is not too expensive. Be aware of very little clearance. Be prepared to not have your cooler work unless some one else can verify it. Also the orientation of the cpu cooler is such that all of the vertical one will blow air up toward the top or down on the video card or power supply.
easily set to 2400Ghz.
Great little case but limited cooling options. Easy build, easy cable management, sharp looking, small.
Best PSU in this price range if you don't need modular.
