As you can probably tell, this is my first build I have ever done. I am very pleased with the outcome of this build.
For some context, I used to own a Synology DS218+ mostly for media consumption. But, it's limitations became obvious early on and when I wanted to upgrade I realized a prebuilt with the kind of horsepower I'd want would cost me over £1000 (thanks to QNAP) so I decided to build one instead.
I was set out to build this since August but it wasn't until early October when I got all the parts that I needed. The build went smoothly up until lining up the motherboard with the stands (which I eventually got someone to help me out on). It was smooth sailing after that.
After months of planning and hours of research and frustration I finally finished the build and fired up unRAID as its OS. Formatting the drives went smoothly and the overall setup was surprisingly easy. I plan to use this server mostly as a media streaming box (via Jellyfin) but also have a Windows 10 VM for hosting purposes and maybe use it to host a Minecraft server in the future.
There are no day 1 problems (fortunately) and I hope it remains that way for as long as possible.
The objective of this build is to build a powerful NAS server for way cheaper than the prebuilt solutions. My main target was to match the capabilities of the Qnap TVS-872XT whilst keeping costs as low as possible. Comparing prices, I believe I have achieved this goal and even exceeded it in some departments (such as CPU and bay count).
I am really proud of this build and I hope it lasts me for years before I require an upgrade.
A great processor for a reasonable price. Has not disappointed me with the initial tests I have done.
This is a fantastic board that matches my colour scheme and has a M.2 slot (which is great if I ever want to get a M.2 SSD for a cache drive in the future).
It just works flawlessly. What more can you ask for?
Fantastic case, has lots of bays and the build quality is great. I also managed to get this at a discount which just adds to the value for me.
It's just a great reliable power supply.
