This was my first build in 12 years, so I had a lot of catching up to do. I read countless articles and watched dozens of YouTube videos about the latest tech and brands, so lots of time self-educating. I've had several laptops over the past few years with the last being a MSI VR63 Stealth, which allowed me to get back into gaming here and there, but I wanted something better, much better. A custom build which was capable of 4K gaming, and the ability to crank through multiple open spreadsheets, outlook, multiple browser tabs and apps for work. I already had the monitor, mouse and keyboard, but needed everything else. I was able to purchase half the parts for the build through selling the laptop.
I ran into one problem when it came time to put the build together. The glass panel on the Fractal Meshify C case broke when I took it off for the first time. Luckily the plastic peel kept it all intact. The guys are Fractal are the ****!! Sean responded to my ticket ASAP, and I had a replacement panel FedEx'd in 3 days. Their customer service is top-notch. A great experience as they felt were down to earth, respectful and just super awesome. It's always nice when companies treat you like a human.
I really like the Meshify C case for several reasons: 1) the design: It really stood out to me, with the textured front panel, 2) the airflow is great, 3) its a classy looking case; no gimmicks, no weird lines, extreme angles or colors. It's a mature case. The tinted glass really makes the lighting inside pop. 5) its small, but functional size. The parts fit well into the case with no major gaps. Its doesn't weight much and doesn't take up too much space on my desktop. 6) cable management is awesome. Its funny because cable management 10+ years ago wasn't a thing. You basically had to deal with ugly IDE cables and zipties held a clump of yellow, red and black wires together. It sucked.
I refused to pay the crazy prices for a 1080ti, so I bought a 1070 for cheap. I returned it a few days later when I found a barely used EVGA 1080ti SC Black Edition for sale on CL for really cheap. The system runs pretty quiet even when under load. It benchmarks into the 98-99 percentile on just about about every test out there. It benched a score of 9369 on Time Spy w/stock settings. I know I can get it a couple hundred points higher, which would put it close to the top in percentile.
I've yet to OC the GPU, but I've managed a successful 5ghz OC on the 8700K. Cinemark tests it well, and that's where the Corsair AIO gets cranking. I have tested it in Prime95, but not for a long period of time. I did not see temps above 85ºC. The max temp seen on the GPU so far has been 72ºC under Time Spy. I heard a little whine under the Passmark GPU bench, but only during low end 3D tests where frame rates were insanely highly. I included pics of the benchmarks. One is from the old 1070. The difference between that and the 1080ti is night and day.
I'm looking into brightening it up with some led strips, but nothing to fancy. I really dig the black/silver look. It's just a super clean, classy and timeless look.
This CPU speaks for itself.
Time tested. Solid.
Bought into the TC hype. It was only a couple bucks anyway.
Always been a ASUS fan. Mid-tier board that looks awesome! I much prefer this board over their higher end Maximum products just on looks alone. This is just a clean, no gimmicky board.
I'm happy with it. Doesn't look gaudy. Its a clean look that fits my theme. I wish the lighting was just a little brighter though.
Went with this for just under $300, but originally was going to get the 256K stick. Glad I made the change.
Build quality is just awesome. Makes everything else look cheap and lame, especially the PNY stuff. I love the lighting. 3 year transferrable warranty.. yes please.
A+. See my main write-up.
Does what I need. Sweet MOLEX connectors!
Skeptic at first. Just buy it. There's not a whole lot of options at this price point. Don't buy the ASUS ROG panel. I took it back. Bad panel.
Thought I was buying the $99 keyboard at the register. Looked at the girl funny like.. uh.. wtf.. bought it anyway. Keys are super sensitive.
My kid likes it because the G color cycles. Fits my giant hand well.
