Description

I sold a 9900k with a radeon rx 5700, 32gb rgb ram, 500gb 970 evo, z390 aorus elite, Corsair h150i in a O11 Dynamic to justify building this into an old case i had previously stored a FreeNAS PC in. I am not gaming so I opted to use the older GTX 970 as it has a nice and fast bus speed, high CUDA core count and memory bandwidth. I wouldn’t see enough improvement spending that money on a 1070 at current rates. The 970 cost me $60 from Craigslist. The PC does idle around 44w, so I put it to sleep when it’s not being put to work. Also, I’ve built a lot of PCs and never have a held a CPU so heavy... or so orange! 🍊

The primary function of this PC is to run a massive amount of VST audio plugins concurrently with minimal real time latency. I also host run multiple instances of VMware. I do play games once in a while but that’s not often 😊

I considered building a 3900X PC, but just couldn’t resist the allure of a $299 ThreadRipper.

Part Reviews

CPU

Got mine for $299 at Microcenter. If your primary work load depends on multithreaded / multi-core performance, it may outperform a 9900k. (It did for me!) Once the price dropped below $300 it was a no brainer for me.

CPU Cooler

After accounting for the Threadripper temperature offset, seems like i'm getting between 35c and 60c on my 2920x. Great!

Motherboard

Former AORUS enthusiast turned ASRock lover. The 2.5gbit LAN is SO FAST! Super well built motherboard too. Was a little worried with 8 phase power but it's been great to me. Solid upgrade over the Z390 Aorus Elite / X470 Aorus Gaming.

Ah! Two 120mm thermaltake white LED fans on the front for intake. Totally forgot to mention that, and I should take a photo of it running and closed up as well. Great catch!

Weird combo but ok. I like new builds in old cases.

Thank you for the positivity. I wish I could find photos of the Haswell PC I built into a Thermaltake Xaser III full tower.
