Description

Our very first build on a hella tight budget, we both sold some of our stuff such as our beloved PS3 and all the accumulated games and accessories on an online auction site to fund hardware purchases, my 8 year old son even sold some of his old toys and Minecraft merch to help with the cost of the parts, they are so expensive!!

My son wanted to modify his existing PC which was already running windows 10 on some pretty old hardware; an AMD Athlon X2 250 CPU, 4gb RAM and a beat up old XFX 8800GTS GPU which would heat up like a small stove.

We were going to get a new Deepcool tesseract case but needed to shave some $$$ off the budget to buy hardware, so we gutted the existing case and painted it yellow and decided to go for Bumblebee from the Transformers movie look. We also custom painted the old keyboard and got the only black and yellow mouse we could find from AliExpress but it does not work very well.

Went for the 2nd hand AMD FX 6300 as it was cheap and you can overclock them pretty good, also got a Deepcool Maelstrom 120t water cooler and 8gb of ddr3 1600 RAM second hand on an online auction site. Also picked up a 520w Corsair power supply on there for $38! Bargain!

As we wanted a side window on our case mod, we chose the Asus 970 PRO GAMING AURA motherboard for its socket (AM3+) and the colour changing LED's on it! Likewise got the Sapphire Radeon RX 470 8GB NITRO+ Video Card because it has lights on it and it was cheaper than the RX 480 and looked cooler. Had a couple of cheap 120mm blue LED fans from the previous PC so whacked them in also.

When we had all the parts arrive at home, we started to install them but being such a small case this was not easy, out came the angle grinder with the cut off disc to modify the HDD bay to fit the radiator and fans for the water cooler, then went in the SSD and the 2 HDD's went into the vacant 5.25" bays using some adapter brackets. It all fit in (just), booted up Windows 10 onto the SSD and away we went real horrorshow, very impressed with the components performance so far.

Part Reviews

CPU

Seems ok to me so far, I haven't really put it to the test yet but it has been handling running games like Lego Worlds and minecraft ok.

CPU Cooler

I like this water cooler unit for the fact it is easy to install, it is cheap and it has a pulsing white face on the cooler. It also works and the deepcool fan is pretty grunty.

Thermal Compound

silver and gooey and does it's thang

Motherboard

I like this boards style and functions, it is also very easy to install components to.

Storage

it has been good so far, it was also a good price and boot times seem good and fast.

Video Card

This card is a beast! good style and good on power and does not seem to even break a sweat running games on very high settings at 1080p 60.

Power Supply

simple, solid reliable and yellow and black

This is a build! Literally. Hacking and modding, hustling for parts, recycling, and son sacrificing? My kind of build.

I think you made the best out of what you've got, this looks so much better than what the hardware would suggest, and also your son seems to be happy about it, it seems everything was successfull. Definitely +1 from me.

Nice color matched build! If I may ask, which type of paint did you use to modify the case and the peripherals?

We used Rustoleum sunshine yellow. It's great because it adheres to plastic quite well.

Thank you for the response. It is certainly difficult to find a case that fits your aesthetic needs completely without modification.

I would love any suggestions as to what are great games to play and because I'm raised by consoles, what a good controller would be, I'm mud on the keyboard and mouse!

I hope im not too late to comment. But if not. Go to steam. Get CS:GO, Garrys Mod, Portal and Portal 2, Skyrim, Fallout 4, Octodad, Minecraft (not on steam) and Vagante. Since it looks like pc is hooked up to the TV, you can also get Tabletop simulator and play board games with the family. If you can get a USB Xbox Controller that'd be great so that you wont have to use the mouse and keyboard all the time.

Also never get stuff off of aliexpress. If you want a black and yellow mouse. Get a Razer Deathadder chroma. Make the LEDs yellow. :3

Mouse and keyboard is hella better than controller though where it actually matters. Just get comfortable and adjust your settings to your liking.

A great project indeed. You can easily OC your CPU. I have mine at 4.6Ghz stable 2 years long without no problems. You should be proud of it :-)

Thanks man! The RX 470 is a beast and it runs really well with the fx 6300, had no problems yet but haven't really worked it too hard, been running Lego worlds on highest settings, Minecraft, euro truck sim 2 on ultra, audiosurf 2 on ultra and trackmania on highest settings, hasn't had any problems at all

Awesome bro, battlefield 1 looks the business. Apparently the AMD FX 6300 isn't good enough to handle BF1, but we'll see. Good luck on your build, it is an expensive hobby but totally worth it. The GTS 8800 got sold to a dude online for around $20NZ probably so he can heat his room, that thing got crazy hot, been thrashed and overclocked to hell.

Do it it's a very good card, sure you could get the rx480 for the a similar price but the Sapphire rx470 looks cool and stays cool under loaf which is what you want
