I wanted needed a high-quality computer for looking at memes and cat pictures online.

This build started out as a few upgrades to my previous build, but it slowly turned into a completely new build and kind of got out of control. Because I didn't buy all of the products at once, the entire process took about 2.5 months.

I also changed my mind a few times along the way, which delayed completion of the final build. (I originally bought a fan-cooled RTX 2070, for example, but ended up going with the cheapest RTX 2080ti I could find—so I could, you know, fully experience every frame of any viral cat videos I might watch.)

About a month ago, I finally gave in, bought a new case (a white Corsair 680x), and replaced pretty much all of the remaining components from my prior build—including the motherboard, my monitors, and my chair.

This was my first experience with custom water cooling. My brother helped my plan and bend the loop, and we went through several iterations before it got to a point we liked. Overall, hard-tube water cooling was less challenging than I thought it would be, but more expensive than I planned.

One thing I didn't anticipate was needing to make modifications to the fans so the fittings would, uh, fit. For some reason, the two Primochill radiators I bought have the inlet and outlet ports placed very close to the fans. So I couldn't fit both the fans and the fittings without shaving some excess plastic off the fans—which I did using a rotary tool. When I bought the white fan grills from jmmods.com, I ended up having to shave them down a bit too so I had room for the fittings.

This build was also my first time making extensive modifications to the case. I felt like six fans was enough—three 120mm intake fans in front, two 140mm output fans on top, and one 140mm output fan on the back. But the case was designed to have two additional fans on the bottom.

I decided against adding two seemingly unnecessary fans on the bottom, but that left a big black gap in the bottom of the case. That didn't work well with the mostly-white aesthetic of the rest of the build.

I eventually decided to add a sort of custom lightbox-thingy on the bottom using LED strips, two sheets of acrylic, and a series of right-angle connectors. Cutting the acrylic and fitting it into the case was a total pain, but I got it figured out with some more help from my brother.

To even out the lighting in the rest of the case, I surrounded the case fans with LED strips. All LEDs in the case are RGB, so I can change the color of any element if I ever decide to go with a different theme. For right now though, I'm sticking with white (except for a few custom elements to accent the build with an animated rainbow pattern).

This build was a real learning experience in several respects, and I made quite a few mistakes along the way. I forgot, for example, to re-insert an O-ring into one of the fittings and a leak occurred. In cleaning up that leak, I sprayed contact cleaner on the motherboard, which ended up being slightly corrosive on some of the plastics (oops!). The cost of fixing that error was relatively minor, but was frustrating nonetheless.

The cable management was also a pretty big pain, but the case helped me quite a bit with organization. There were plenty of places to which I could zip-tie cables or fasten loose parts. The SSD and HDD racks in the back of the case were also pretty convenient, although they may have been better-suited for the opposite side for cable-management purposes.

Overall, I’m happy with how it turned out. I’ve learned A LOT and I expect my next build process to be a lot smoother. The memes and cat pictures have never looked better.

In some cultures, people travel to large structures called "offices" where they perform tasks in exchange for compensation—usually in the form of money. This practice is commonly called "work."

When people perform "work" in an "office" building, they often require a desk to sit at. Many "office" buildings use a layout involving cubicles to avoid the costs and space constraints associated with providing "workers" with individually-walled-off rooms.

Employers, in turn,can sometimes rent these cubicles for themselves or their workers at a lower price than a formal office room would cost.

I pay the owner of one of these "office" buildings a fixed price each month ("rent") to use a cubicle. I then travel to that cubicle on work days to perform services for others in exchange for compensation.

Because I intend to use this computer, at least in part, for work, I keep it in my cubicle.

From what I've researched, m.2 heatsinks are sometimes counter-productive. It's been a while since I looked it up, but I remember reading that some m.2s perform better without any cooling solutions.

Also, I've never experienced high temps with the 970 pros. I had an MP500 in one of my other builds and it got super hot.

I honestly got it for aesthetics only because I had to remove the ASUS RGB cover in that area. For that purpose, it works great and looks fantastic in my opinion.

I originally bought two but the second wouldn't fit underneath the long graphics card, unfortunately.

also considered getting it for the looks, but now that i won't buy a new PC and instead upgrade my PC i don't need a fancy M2 Cooler :D thanks for your answer anyway. Hope my new MP510 will not run too hot once i got the mobo

Does your MP510 idle at around 70c? It's possible mine was defective or something. I see on Amazon some people are saying theirs idles in the 30-40c range. I might also have needed a bios update or something, but I haven't checked on it since I put a generic brand heatsink on it—it has been running great for a couple years now, even if it was a lemon.

Anyway, point is that you probably have very little to worry about heat-wise.

About to build a new pc....this is very tempting....

How hard was it to do all the custom work? Any advice to anyone who would want to build something like this?

The hardest thing was actually cable management—or, that was the most time-consuming at least. Each fitting is lit with LEDs and Thermaltake including these insanely-long cables for each one. It was really inconvenient to wire. That, along, with all the different LED strips made for a bunch of cables in the back.

Initially, I couldn't close the back of the case, but I eventually replaced my motherboard, which gave me an opportunity to do decent cable management in the entire build.

Customizations to the case were easily. Cutting acrylic isn't that hard and you only need a single hand-held tool, which I'll discuss in a second.

Painting was also easy and somewhat fun. Taping the fans off was a pain in the butt, but worth it to make the fan frames white.

I will 100% do hard tubing again. It was fun, not that difficult, and I really like the aesthetic and additional cooling.

Any advice to anyone who would want to build something like this?

BUY A DREMEL! (Or other rotary tool) That would be my #1 piece of advice for anyone thinking about doing custom mods on any part of their PC. Not sure how I lived without one.

With the LEDs, I probably wouldn't do it again. Once I got lights in one area, there were other areas that became too dark and needed it, and then the lighting needed to be reworked on everything. I can barely take pictures of it now because it's too bright. If I were to do it all over again, I'd probably use lighting purely to accent specific components rather than lighting the whole case.

The acrylic stuff though, I really like how it turned out and will probably use things like the fan covers again in future builds.

Wait, I should add this: You can totally do a build like this. Most of the stuff that was difficult was only difficult because I'm very inexperienced in building stuff. I'm a lawyer by trade and don't actually know what any of these things do (jk).

I'm literally staring at the parts and was about to start a very similar build, but I'm struggling with laying out where the pump/reservoir would fit so I started looking for pictures of people that did something similar. I'm assuming you put them in the back by the power supply and hard drives? Unless they're hidden by some other sorcery. I guess I'm trying to avoid that. I would like if possible to have the reservoir visible. Did you try to find a way to fit it up front and was it just not going to work? I might change cases if so.

Sorry for the delay in answering. Yes, I put the pump/reservoir combo in the back/front area. The case has some very convenient holes to strap a reservoir to right there in the back.

I didn't post pictures of the back. I was hoping to kind of hide it, since it's the ugly part, but I will go ahead and upload a few photos of it—just for you (and, I suppose, whoever else might be looking at this post for inspiration).

I tried a few different locations in the case when planning the loop, but ultimately I felt like the reservoir detracted aesthetically from other components. The front was kind of carefully crafted in some respects and I didn't want the reservoir covering it.

That being said, it would definitely be possible to strap a reservoir in the front chamber. The graphics card is too large to fit it between the radiator on the front, so it would have to go on the back, the bottom, or even the top if you aren't planning to put a reservoir there. I will snap a side picture so you can see this empty area next to the GPU in the case.

Okay, I've added three photos, which you can find as the last three images of this build. In my defense about the cable management: I had so many small components with so much RGB that this was the best I could do. It took HOURS to organize those cables.

Now, to the part you're actually interested in: As you can see from the last three pictures, the reservoir is in the back chamber attached to the grate in front. That grate is normally covered by the case, but it provides some really convenient space to strap random components to. The four SSDs, which I have in a RAID configuration, are sitting on top of the three large HDDs, which I use for backup. Those all are then sitting on the power supply.

The HDD and SSD cages that came with the case are super convenient, but somewhat limiting in that you're basically stuck placing your hard drives there unless you want to jury-rig some other placement in the case.

Back to the reservoir. The last photo I attached is of an angle that shows the backside of the front chamber. There are two vertical slits that are meant for a vertically-place GPU for people that want that option. I can't know for sure without taking my reservoir out, but it looks like a reservoir can probably fit there.

Actually, for good measure, I'll add a fourth image showing a soda can where I'm talking about.

I'm assuming that since a 473 mL soda can can fit, a reasonably-sized reservoir can fit too. And it shouldn't be too difficult to attach it to those two vertical slits.

If the pump adds too much girth, you might be in trouble. But a standalone reservoir should be fine, then you can find somewhere else to stick the pump.
