Description

Upgrades upgrades upgrades! Who doesn't like Upgrades? Well Ive got one right here for ya, and you might not agree with it! ( Well I mean you might like the build, but I know you wont like the CPU choice, I can just tell, please read the description before commenting, thank you.)

From my last PC upgrades, you may be asking yourself "This man here is crazy!" Well Ill admit that I was never the best at picking PC parts and deep down inside I always had this hidden spot for AMD, but I could never justify going AMD at the moment.

Well that changed, and as my X99 system (I know I know, bear with me) started to get on my last nerves with compatibility issues I just couldn't compromise on, I gave up. And with that I decided to do a revamp and start all over again!

No here is where I explain my CPU choice, because I'm fairly certain you want to burn me at the stake right about now. I switched over from Intel to AMD for one reason, and that is: Curiosity. Ive never really done anything else other then Intel and Nvidia builds and Upgrades, so I wanted to try something new. I kicked myself in Microcenter to not by an i7-6700K and bought an FX 8370 instead.

Now I'm going to admit here that this was not the best choice, but I wasn't building the "best PC for the money" and that was never the objective here. Getting that out of the way, so far Ive had no problems with the CPU choice at all and I'm happy with my build as of now. (Hence the name of this build, it was at my own will, and my profile picture is the Emperor :P )

Now for the parts:

After ditching the mATX setup, I decided to go back to ATX and just have my PC on the floor our of the way, but still wanted a window so the internals can still be seen. I picked up all the parts before the holiday sales and to my amazement, none of my parts (except for the FX 8350) went on sale. So I was happy and didn't regret my purchases.

Now contrary to popular belief here, the FX-8370 is an Awesome CPU for the right price. At Microcenter I picked up the CPU and motherboard for a total of $200, which is great and I did a slight OC on it for that extra boost. The RAM was on sale, the case was the best there for the money, and the CPU cooler wasn't exactly what I wanted, but the RED LEDs actually look really nice and go with the AMD theme.

Now the GPU was a tricky choice, at first I replaced my GTX 780 Ti with an R9 390, but that Fury was calling my name! I WANTED IT, AND I GOT IT!!! I exchanged the 390 for the Fury and couldn't be more happy paying $60 more for it. Best GPU Ive owned so far and I will never let it go.

What the future holds for this build is uncertian, but hopefully Zen is a sucess because that would be the first thing I would upgrade to. Now dont get me wrong, the FX 8370 is great, but its toward the end of its lifespan and will need to be upgraded. But for now, it serves me well and Im happy with it.

Stay tuned for another Phenomenal build coming soon! :P

Thanks for checking out my build!

Part Reviews

CPU

For its age, this CPU is still great if bought for the right price. Although at this point in time I would suggest waiting for Zen.

But if you already have the motherboard, this is a great upgrade!

CPU Cooler

Ah the classic Hyper 212 Evo, now with red LEDS! 'Nuff said.

Motherboard

Works great! This is one of the best AM3+ 970 chipset motherboards out there, and if you can find it cheap, its great.

Its a well built motherboard, looks great, and the BIOS is easy to use.

Memory

Its RAM, 16 GBs, 1866 mhz, just what I need and looks good too.

Note the heat spreaders are tall so it can cause air cooler compatibility issues.

Video Card

All I can say is, for $259 this card was a steal!

Its an R9 Fury, what more can you ask for, its a great overall card.

Case

This case is pretty sweet for the price. Its interior is easy to work in and mounting anything is a breeze.

My only gripe, is that there are no top fan mounting positions so you're only limited to a single exhaust fan which can be a problem if you have a CPU that tends to run hot.

I also wanted to switch over to AMD for the curiosity of it.. Although I feel like people would make fun of me for it :/.

  • 1 point

Well so far no one has said anything negative about it, so you shouldn't let others negatively impact your decisions.

Id wait for Zen if you want to switch, I was just impatient and curious but it was worth it to me.

Nah. Also, AMD is still more solid than Intel for budget workstations, IMO. Yeah, they've got less performance per core, so somewhat worse for gaming. But more cores means better multitasking, and AMD's the only one who's going to sell you an octa-core at the $120 range.

  • -3 points

AMDs cores are half of 1 Intel core so 8 AMD cores is 4

  • 2 points

That's both a misconception and an oversimplification. It's true that FX cores aren't fully independent of each other, since they share a number of resources such as FP computation, but to say that an AMD core is half of an Intel core is kinda wrong. :/

  • -2 points

I know this is late, but an FX core is practically indeed 1/2 an Intel core. Of course reality is more complex, with HyperThreading in Intel and individual integer computation in AMD, but yeah.

Ryzen is looking great though, sadly stupid kinks seem to affect gaming, even if single-core performance is still great...

Heck no. I'm in the same boat. I've been curious for ages when it comes to AMD processors. I have no desire to burn you nor anyone just because you wanted to try it.

Otherwise, this looks awesome. Love the parts with clean cable management inside your case. I think you got some amazing prices too! I wish I could have your sweet deals.

So what exactly happened with your old build?

  • 2 points

Well for one, I just wanted my build to truly be something I can be happy with, and with the RAM I had being slightly too tall, me wanting an air cooler, and the fact that the Board being mATX made size compatibility a nightmare, I went and ditched the setup and went back to ATX.

Then I was thinking, I wanted to try something different then the usual Intel build with an AMD or Nvidia GPU, so I went the all AMD route, and I can a test now that as old as this Architecture is, its not THAT bad, it works and I'm pretty impressed with it for its age and price.

I actually used two Intel CPUs before this, and sometimes for me it gets stale only having a one sided choice because everyone says "this is better, don't consider the competition." So I did what most people don't do and went with whats "worse".

I still cant really complain though, It does what I want it to do. :)

  • 1 point

That FX 8370 is a great chip and even without and OC will run most games just fine. In fact I have yet to find one in my vast libraries that it wont play extremely well. With that being said great rig for under a grand.

I will say the only game that does have a little bit of a problem for me is BeamNG Drive, but its still playable at Medium settings.

This is yet again another great AMD build. Just because AMD have had a patchy past, doesn't mean their more recent chips are bad

+1 for great, aesthetically pleasing AMD build

For their age, I still think their great budget CPUs. Hopefully they can still last as long as their Phenom II and Athlon II predecessors :D

I hope too. Don't want my amd computer to die

  • 1 point

It will last, even Intels long lived Core 2 CPUs are still used today and are good cheap CPUs for extreme budgets.

5 years for an architecture run is a long time, but it made it and it's successor is right around the corner!

  • 2 points

Thanks!

I'll admit that I used to hate on AMD back when I was a noob but the more and more I learned, the more it sparked my curiosity and only recently did I really want to do an AMD build. (I had tried before but it failed, see this build and it's revision)

Anyway, either Intel or AMD would've been fine for me, but it's always cool to try something different for a change. :D

That R9 Fury deal is incredible. I just picked up 2 of them myself for a crossfire set up in my rig.

  • 1 point

Cool build! I'm actually a bit curious of AMD myself, but there's no way that I'm gonna ditch my 6600K. What were the "compatibility issues"?

EDIT: Very interested in Zen. Matter of fact, I'm looking to buy it when it comes out (if it isn't sold out by then and isn't absolute ****).

  • 1 point

Thanks!

X99 just happens to be a large socket and putting it on a small board made large air coolers and tall ram a compatibility issue and then some air coolers interfeared with the PCI slots, also the EVGA board I had wasn't in spec and the socket was lower then most other mATX boards.

I would've loved to do that, but AMD doesn't have branded DDR4 memory unfortunelty.

For the cpu cooler, can you completely take off the first fan and replace it with two new ones. I'm looking to have matching types of fans on the cooler but don't know if it's possible.

  • 2 points

Uh, I think so?

My builds changed quite a bit since I built this one, but iirc it has clips you can use to mount another fan.

I think it might only work with CM fans/

I got the name from here: http://www.theforce.net/swtc/isdlist.html

It also fits that I basically went with AMD over Intel at my own will, so its the Emperor's Will. ;)
