Description

Edit: I bring bad news! I brought the CPU back to stock speeds so I could make some comparison graphs, when I tried to get it back up to 5.04GHz, it just wouldn't! 5.0GHz worked but with artifacts on some games. I've had to drop it to 4.8 to get rid of the artifacts. Goddamnit. If I wasn't so curious this would have never happened :(

So, after a whole year of waiting, I finally got round to the upgrade my main rig finally deserved! I say upgrade, when really it was more of a sidestep, but a sidestep I really should have taken a long time ago. I used to run a Q8300 an old Intel quad-core from 2008. I gained a small amount of multithreaded performance but a huge leap in single threaded performance. I gained about 20FPS increase in most of my games...not something you'd spend £230 I guess... However, what I wanted more than any performance was this gorgeous colour scheme! I went from a horrible beige, blue and yellow LGA775 board to this piece of beauty.

Anyway, enough about the colour scheme. I am running an incredible overclock of 5.04GHz at 1.275V, no idea how I managed that. Must have had a very well binned CPU, but my water cooler and motherboard must have helped. I can max out all of the games I play other than BF3.

Most of the parts were carried over. Only the ones listed with a price were bought, so this is more of an upgrade than a new build. As far as I can tell, though, it works and looks just as good as if it was a brand new build!

PS: Sorry for some of the bad photos. Some were taken with my iPad camera which is not particularly good.

Part Reviews

CPU

Great little chip. It's not often you spend less on the processor than the case, and get this kind of performance. I'm running a stable 5.04GHz with it, just a 120mm radiator with a push/pull setup! Single core performance is through the roof!

CPU Cooler

Very surprised with this cooler. As it is the cheapest AIO on the block, I decided to try it out, wondering if water cooling would help me much. Well, it certainly did. I'm not getting more than 67c under 100% load with my CPU running 5.04GHz, all while the cooler is dead silent! Cooler Master included 8 fan mounts, so I could easily add a fan to make it a push/pull radiator. Love it!

Motherboard

I will put it bluntly. This is the most gorgeous motherboard I have ever worked with. All black with the perfect licks of white, enough to be noticed but certainly not overpowering. It's not a shoddy board as far as performance goes either, I've found. Considering I can do 5.04GHz with my Pentium on it, with the cheapest AIO water cooler on the market, it must be pretty decent!

Memory

It's RAM...what can I say? Looks great in white, matches my board well. I'm currently running it at 2133MHz, higher than it says on the box. Does the job just fine. First time I've ever had 8GB of RAM in my own system, so I feel a little spoilt.

Storage

Plenty fast, boots my Windows 10 Home in 11 seconds. Plenty of storage, 1TB is more than I'll ever need. Will remain my primary boot drive for a long time.

Video Card

It's decent. It runs all the games I play at max settings, no sweat. Cooler is nice and quiet, good looking as well. Only complaint would be it's size, but that's more of a benefit than a disadvantage. It just looks a little silly in my system, being so short.

Case

The last NZXT case I used (Source 210) was a bit of a disaster. Hard drives didn't fit properly, there were no SSD mounts, and mounting fans was a pain in the backside. This has been a breath of fresh air in comparison. Love the minimalist look and lack of optical drives, I felt spoilt for space inside this compact case. Power supply cover, hidden drive bays and plenty of cable hiding options is just a bonus. Window looks amazing with LED lighting. Was a steal for £47!

Power Supply

Just...meh. I got this PSU as a stopgap, and unfortunately the next one was never ordered. It does the job, just about. Cables are stiff and the "black sleeving" is mostly seethrough. Connectors don't fit very well. Voltage regulation is poor and it runs quite hot. A pretty box and well known company doesn't mean a high quality unit.

Can we get screenshots of the overclock? maybe an occt screenshot or a cpu-z? Also maybe a 1Hour P95 screenshot as well. I doubt a 5Ghz OC but you know what I'd believe you once I see pictures.

You, sir, have appeared to jinx my PC. Out of curiosity, I dropped back to 3.2 to measure performance increases with the overclock...and then it refused to go back up. 5.04 wouldn't start. 5.0 had artefacts. 4.9 had even worse artefacts (wat?) and then 4.8 was finally stable.

Such a shame, as it appeared totally stable at 5.04 beforehand. Maybe I was pushing my luck just a bit too much with that one.

Every once in a while you find a PC that utilizes the white color scheme very well. This is one of those PC's. Nice job!

hey dude, I dont know why some of these people are being so critical of your pc, but I really like it. I couldnt care less whether you had 4.8 or 5ghz, both are a nice oc. your pc looks really nice, i wish i could have something that nice

Hey, thanks mate. I guess tiny_voices is just curious, I know him from the TomsHardware forums and he means no harm. I can understand why he would be skeptical, I've done some more research myself and I've found that my chip must be one of a kind or something; very few people get above 5GHz with the G3258. Either way, I'm very happy with my setup and I don't care too much about if I manage to stay at 5GHz or not either :)

Dang! 5.04 GHz overclock! You sir, have won the silicone lottery! I like the nice cable management and clean setup. However, I would replace the PSU if you plan on getting a better graphics card, and especially with that beast of an overclock. I would also recommend adding in an SSD for better performance, in terms of data transfer and load times. Overall, I like the build, and it looks really nice. Good job :)

I very seriously doubt that he got 5.0ghz on 1.275v. VERY unlikely.

Great looking build! Nice job on parting out the theme. Those MSI boards are pretty nice. Might have to consider them in the future. Hard to get me away from ASUS when they've served me so well. I bet you had a blast building with that case, I know I did. I definitely think you should get an extension for you GPU and your theme is set!

You've set yourself up nicely for upgrades, plenty of room to add more ram, expand to SSDs, GPU, and even your processor one day. Got to love that LGA 1150 socket. +1

What fps do you get with it on something like battlefield? What monitor do you use? Please get back to me if you can. Nice build and I love the case!

I have an Iiyama ProLite B2409HDS, 1080p, 75Hz, 2ms response time. I get about 60FPS high settings on BF3, but it drops below 40 if I have it set to max.

Does the 430W handle the OC? I'm planning on getting the same pc, but with a 950.

  • 2 points

Don't get the CX430. It's a bad power supply...do as I say not as I do etc...

I would recommend the XFX TS450 instead. It's a much better quality power supply, and can pull the extra wattage. http://www.amazon.co.uk/XFX-Edition-Bronze-Wired-Supply/dp/B005FPT38U

wow bro ima have that same mother board ram and processor and u have it at 5.04Ghz wow bro tell me your secret lol and if u start playing world of tanks hit me up ill show u hows its done also where is the oc geni button

  • 1 point

Don't use that damn button. It'll not give you a decent overclock, maybe 4.2 at most. Try setting the core voltage to 1.23V and the CPU ratio to 43 in the OC tab. I play WoT, yeah. Because it is a single core game, the Pentium runs it like a beast. Considering my PC is distinctly entry-level, I'm surprised I can run it at 60FPS Max settings.

If your playing single threaded games, then the g3258 is going to be just as fast as any other CPU.

Jaw droped!! 5 Gigahertz!!! You hit the jackpot on that CPU! Not even most i7s get 5ghz, but rather 4.9ghz.

I VERY seriously doubt he hit 5.0ghz at that voltage. HE has also yet to post any kind of proof of this.

CPU-Z screenshot, or it didn't happen. Same as always. 5.04 @ 1.275 is at best very skeptical, at worst, almost certainly unlikely. And I'd prefer to see Prime running in a window beside it. Anybody can achieve 5Ghz but doing it and keeping it stable are two different things.

  • -2 points

100% agree. there is no chance he did 5.0ghz @ 1.275v. Just didn't happen.

  • 0 points

Exactly. Well, he could probably DO it, it would certainly not be stable though and would either crash as soon as anything demanding was loaded or be constantly introducing errors into the file system proactively.

Some people try to see racism in everything, even when it's not there. It's ok to be proud if you're a non-white ethnic group, but it's not when you're white. Now THAT, is racist.

Haha, I feel so ridiculous with that PC next to that monitor. But hey, even if it looks pretty terrible, is small and a has a high response time, it's more space to shove windows. Thanks for the kind comment!
