What happens when you cross two different graphics cards?

I was thinking about cards, like most do when they are in places they'd prefer not to be, and i came across a thought: What happens when you mix two graphics cards on the same motherboard without SLI or CrossFire?

It would be bad… Try to imagine all life as you know it stopping instantaneously and every molecule in your body exploding at the speed of light.

Total protonic reversal!

Right. That's bad. Okay. All right. Important safety tip. Thanks, Wolfemane.

I have a GTX 660 and a GTX 980 Ti in one rig and they seem to work fine (not SLI, of course). The 660 is just used to power extra displays and a PhysX card when needed.

A rig with both AMD and Nvidia cards would only use one at a time, if it works at all.

Use one for your main rig and dedicate the other to virtual sessions. E.g. two people playing on one machine.
