Should I wait for AMD's Threadripper 2?

I was just start building a Threadripper system when I heard about Threadripper 2 coming in a few months? Does anyone knows if there's going to be a 16-core for Threadripper 2? Or 16-core is going to stay on Gen 1 for at least another year. I don't want just buy a Threadripper 1 and then in two month a new one comes out.

Thanks,

I don't think they have 100% confirmed but i believe for sure they said it will be up to 32 cores but as far as i read up online it says....

"Final specifications aren't decided yet, but AMD has two samples. One is a 32-core/64-thread part; the other is a 24-core/48-thread part."

Yes, I read that too, I don't like when companies don't share more specific details. I also watched an interview that the gen 1 and gen 2 will coexist together for a while, but some SKUs will be removed, but that's about it, again no specifics.

Thanks,

16-cores are likely to be some of the last models launched since they would either be two fully enabled modules like Gen 1 or 4 modules with only a single CCX enabled.

It will be very interesting to see which way they go since these are likely the missing EPYC models which were supposed to be refreshed but were cancelled/missing/disappeared after the whole exploit issues put the brakes on server market waiting on exploit fixed models.

It will also have some very interesting performance variations I expect since the Data Fabric load is being massively changed.

The current rumors say August. I would keep your ear to the ground.
