I am about to start grad school (non-science major) and I desperately need a new laptop. It will be used for basic stuff like word processing in class, but I will also use it to play video games with friends when I visit my hometown on holidays. I have a full gaming rig (Ryzen 5 1600/GTX 1070) but it's obviously not portable, so i'm looking at laptops with dGPU's. On my laptop I don't play anything graphically demanding, CiV/Stellaris/Total War mostly. I think I have it narrowed down to three choices:
Acer Aspire 5 with i5 8250U/MX150 ($750-$800CAD, $680CAD if I get open box) https://www.bestbuy.ca/en-ca/product/acer-aspire-5-15-6-laptop-black-intel-core-i5-8250u-256gb-ssd-8gb-ram-windows-10/11624440.aspx?
Acer Swift 3 with i5 8250U/MX150 ($800-$900CAD, haven't seen open box) https://www.bestbuy.ca/en-ca/product/acer-swift-3-15-6-laptop-silver-intel-core-i5-8250u-128gb-ssd-1tb-hdd-8gb-ram-windows-10/11624445.aspx
Acer Aspire 7 with i5 8300H/GTX1050 4GB ($930CAD with Acer's 15% discount available until tomorrow) https://caen-store.acer.com/aspire-7-laptop-a715-72g-55ep
I was initially set on getting an open box Aspire 5, but the price/power of the Aspire 7 seems amazing. Not sure if it is IPS tho. The Swift also seems really light and well-built, but it definitely comes at a premium. I am kind of terrified that the low power U series chips are going to throttle like crazy, as I have seen happen in benchmarks (for more graphically demanding games). The Aspire 7 is also like 1lbs-2lbs heavier, not sure if that is a big deal tho. I am budget conscious, but I could pop for the Aspire 7 if it was an outstanding deal in people's opinion (normally retails on Acer site for $1100CAD).
Would appreciate any input!
