Google Chrome is out to ruin my computer.

I open a single tab, and my CPU usage shoots up - Chrome is using 30% with a single GMail tab open, often shooting up to 40% or more. By comparison, Firefox is running 6 rather heavy tabs, and only using 5% or less (it shoots up to 20-25% when changing pages or opening a new Youtube video). I've already run 2 antivirus scans, a Kapersky and multiple McAfee scans, and nothing came up. Is something horribly screwed?

what CPU do you have? You might need a chilled 2990WX just to run chrome well

I'm running this off a laptop, so an i5-7200u (Dual-core, 4 threads, 2.7ghz base).

Strangely, my 2011 Thinkpad (i5-560m, Dual-core, 4 threads, 2.66ghz base) has no issue with Chrome.

Have you tried reinstalling Chrome? (as firedrakes says, something could have been corrupted, causing it to in improperly)

No, that sounds about right… although Firefox isn't necessarily that lightweight either.

Roasting aside, it may be worth having a look in Task Manager (Google Chrome's Task Manager, not Windows's Task Manager) (Shift + Esc) to make sure it's not an extension.
