I was wondering if i could jury rig an old cd/rom port to my modern laptop to funtion.

It might be easier to just get an external USB optical drive for your laptop.

If it's a really old optical drive, you'd need an IDE adapter and a 4-pin molex power source. For a more recent one, you'd need equipment for SATA, instead of IDE.
