WIndows 10 Pro vs Home

I'm building a pc for a buddy of mine. He's going to be using it for basic office type software (i.e. not much gaming if any). Is there any huge disadvantages to Windows 10 HOME edition?

Slightly off topic, but since they already answered your question, a Linux distro is another option to consider. The OS is free and for office and internet browsing, there is a lower (not non-existent) risk of viruses. Libre Office is a free suite of software similar to Microsoft Office. Just something to consider as another option.

I second this. He can use something like Linux Mint for now (spend more on parts) and then get windows 10 later...

Short answer is get Windows 10 HOME edition.

As other people have mentioned, there are plenty of advantages to Windows 10 PRO edition. But my personal opinion is that the PRO version is not worth the extra cost.

Hope something here can help you with your question! -Rico

Do not advocate piracy. Both options are not "free"

There is also a 128GB RAM limit for home, but that's a limit that only high-end workstations will go over.

There are only really 3 reasons to get 10 Pro:

  1. You buy one that costs less than or the same as Home edition. (discount or used)

  2. You need more than 128GB RAM.

  3. You need BitLocker.

Data encryption, which is not something normally done on a PC. If the drive is encrypted and the pc/laptop is stolen or lost then your data is still secure.
