I would love to have some critiques of this parts list before my sons and I start assembling parts for them to build their first gaming rig.

Thanks!

This looks great but why do you want 2 NVMe's at 1 GB each ?

Also, for a first time build I would stay away from AIO coolers. I would use a good air cooler.

You don't mention a case ?

Thx. Fair point on the NVMEs. I'd read at Tom's HW that two NVMEs would get me a slight performance boost but now that I am thinking about it I am growing less interested in managing the space on my kids' PC.

What do you suggest for an air cooler?

For the case I was looking at the Cooler Master MasterCase H500 ATX Mid Tower Case (on the list above.)

There are a lot of good ones out there...… Does he plan on overclocking ?

But I like the Scythe Mugen 5. For a beginner it mounts very easily. I should say that aftermarket air coolers can be awkward to install. Again, not the Scythe. But if he does want to overclock...… ask around people here have pretty good ideas.

  • Cheaper CPU cooler (check out TechPowerUp's review, as it'll perform much better than that be quiet unit)
  • The CAS latency on those entry 3600MHz kits are quite high, so performance will take a small dive (you'd be better off buying a cheap 3000 or 3200MHz, instead)
  • Cheaper PSU (850W is too much, 750 would be more suitable)
  • Cheaper Windows licence (still is legitimate)
