Seeing what list you would bring up for gaming; going from worst/budget to best.

i3-3220

FX-4300

FX-6300

FX-8320

FX-8350 = i5-3570k (4670k)

i7-3770k (4770k)

Then sandy bridge-E

How would you rank them?

(I know there are more i3's i5's and i7's, but I don't feel like writing them all down. These are the most common ones.)

Well, it depends on your budget. If you have ~1200, then i5-3570k is the best, although you can get a similar build with the FX-8350 for about 50-100 dollars less.

If you're a reasonably strong gamer, and can afford systems at 1000 and above, I would highly suggest the FX-8350, i5-3570K, and the i7-3770K. The 4670K and the 4770K don't offer enough compensation for the $20 price increase.

So here is the final hierarchy (from worst to best): i3-3220 FX-4300 FX-6300 FX-8320 FX-8350 i5-3570K i7-3770K

The only change I would make would be to remove the 3770k because it has 8 threads and hyperthreading which no games on the market take advantage of, so it's of no use to a gamer. That would move the 3570k to the top of the heap where it rightly belongs. But as you said the 3570k is the best.

3220 is a decent one for being dual core.
