Why limit it to Southern Cali? Northern Cali is beautiful. I would love to live either in the Lake Tahoe area or up near Lake Shasta near Redding. It’s a beautiful state and I would move there if I could afford it. I have a lot of really good family memories from that state.

Comment reply on Forum Topic "Should I have seeked out skills, connections and experience/gone to trade school over a college degree?"

  • 1 point

I’m a freshman in university now. I’m in a very focused major and I know what I want to do after school. However, I know a lot of students who are in school just to be in school. One girl told me she didn’t want to go to college but felt like she was supposed so she majored in business because she assumed she might use it some day.

I really dislike this mindset. You shouldn’t feel like you have to go to college. I understand if you’re unsure about your future and what you want to do, but I don’t think going to college, which is very expensive, to get a degree you might use, is the best choice if you’re still trying to figure out who you are and what you want to do for the rest of your life.

I’m not going to tell you what you should have done, that doesn’t matter now. You can’t change the past.

If you really want this job and they are offering to pay for your training in exchange for just one year of work, I’d say go for it! That’s a great deal.

Be positive, apply yourself, do the best you can, treat everyone with respect, make solid connections and you will go far.

(Again, college freshman here, so take what I say with a grain of salt.)

Partners can cheat on you and screw you over in the courts despite being in the wrong. So that begs the question, should I even be loyal

I'm confused. Are you trying to legitimize cheating on your significant other just because there is a possibility that he or she could cheat on you and take you to court?

I would say, if that's your mindset, don't get involved in a committed relationship. You're just going to hurt the other person.

Countries or governments can take your assets, freedom and even life for any reason and there's not much you can do about it.

Well, you could get involved in the political system. (Assuming you are in the United States) Get out and vote, send a letter to your congressman, speak out against policies you don't agree with. (However, make sure to be specific and articulate about it, no one will take you seriously if you just starting screaming vague chants filled with profanity.)

I know my generation (gen z) and the one before tend to think we, as the people, don't have any power in politics, but we do. We decide who is elected and who isn't. Get out and vote.

Some people have absolute loyalty towards their religion. God can send you to hell for sin, something he created (which makes me believe he's either petty or doesn't exist.)

Hey! That's me! :D

Say what you will about religion, I have found that my faith in Christ has given me a strong sense of peace and given me direction and purpose in life. Without my faith I would have killed myself long ago. What's the point of life if there is no greater purpose?

However, I want to make it clear, if you are not a Christian, if you follow another religion or perhaps deny the existence of a God entirely, I still love and respect you. It's not my place to judge others. I am responsible for myself, not you or anyone else.

With that said, I hope you had a good Thanksgiving and hope you have a very merry Christmas and New Year! :)

Personally, not a fan of turkey, but I partook of everything else. Twice. ;)

Communication/ distraction during uncomfortable situations. Lol

As far as communication goes, I could probably get buy with a flip phone except that many of my friends use Facebook Messenger instead of traditional SMS text and I need to keep up with emails. I've also found it to be really useful while selling items on eBay because it will notify me as soon as an item sells and I can ship it out quicker. It's just convenient really. I could get by without one, but life is a little easier with it.

My current phone actually just bricked itself. No idea what happened, but it's fallen into an endless reboot cycle. So I bought a refurbished iPhone 6s and I'm going to switch from FreedomPop, which wasn't very reliable, to Ting. Looking forward to it! :D

Nutrition. Nutrition. Nutrition.

If you eat like crap, you're going to function like crap. Seriously, the best advice I can give is watch what you eat. However, having diabetes will present quite a challenge I would think. Have you talked with your doctor yet? If not, I highly suggest meeting with him or her and discussing good foods to eat and or insulin solutions.

It sounds like you're pretty healthy, just need to pack on muscle. A good protein shake will help and plain old hard work in the gym paired with proper nutrition, but again talk to your doctor.

Exactly! That's what I'm trying to figure out.

So far, I'll know better after my first year of college, but I don't think I'll have to worry about large shopping trips. I'll eat at the dining commons and stay in the dorms, however when I do need some things I think I could probably stick the items in a backpack or maybe even get a couple saddlebags for the bike and stick them in there.

Again, the bike is really just for commuting and not so much for preparing for Thanksgiving dinner. ;)

However, you bring up a very good question and I think that's something I'm going to have to figure out. Thankfully I will have a year at school where I won't need a vehicle so I can kinda figure out if a motorcycle would work or not and what I'll need and what I won't need.

Thanks for the answers. I have a one counter question.

  1. What about occasional rain? Could I get some sort if rain gear, bright yellow or orange, that could keep my clothes underneath dry?

I'll keep my options open and keep an eye on the used car market here too, but the more I look into motorcycles the more fun it looks. Just still wrestling with the practicality of it is all. ;)

Everyone on this forum seems to like the Miata, what’s the appeal of it, not really a fan myself lol

Just a fun, cheap little roadster that'll last for hundreds of thousands of miles if properly maintained and maintenance isn't that expensive. Mechanically simple too, from what I hear, so repairs aren't usually very expensive.

Since I’m 19 and live in NY my monthly Insurance payment is $360, yes that’s not a typo.

I believe it.

I just got a free Geico quote on a 1993 Mazda Miata (the car I'm thinking about buying) and it would cost me about $277 a month and I think that's just basic liability coverage. Full coverage is about $320. Although I think I could probably get it cheaper if I put it on my parents insurance.

Along with what Michel said, I would suggest picking up some anti static bags to put the part in and then securely package it in a box. I don't know the science behind it, but every part I've bought (motherboard, graphics card, HDD) come in one.
