Forum Topic "In regards to the internet, how do you plan on raising your children?"

Nullarc77 3 Builds 1 point 13 days ago

Well as somebody who is currently being home schooled and has been all my life I can recommend. My parents also agree that around age 15(if the kid is ready) they should start moving away from high school and in to higher levels of education. I am 16 almost finished with high school and starting college soon.

Plus there are a lot of advantages for the kid. Does not need to spend 6-8 hours in a class when they can accomplish everything in 1-2 hours and either get more work done or just pursue something else. If I was public schooled or private schooled I would not have been able to learn about computers and get into how they work and what parts do what nearly as well. Because I would have been studying other things that were required and I had no interest in more than 2-3 hours a day.

Plus if you ever decide to take a trip you don't need to run it by the school. You can just tell your kid to pack and you can just leave. Also it can let you spend more time with them. And if you are worried about the so called typical aniti-social home schooled kid, while there are those types of people present, they are few and far between. Most home schooled kids I have met are just as social if not more than the average kid that goes to public or private school. But the stereotypical ant-social homeschoolers do exist. And they make the rest of us look bad. I met some a while back. But as long as you don't let your kid stay inside all day only with nobody to speak to you will be fine.

Here is what I would do. Instead of getting a 1440p 144hz panel, use your 1080p 240hz for fast paced multiplayer games where refresh rate is more important than graphics. And get a 4k 60hz monitor for your single player games to get the best graphics out if those. You are certainly capable if running 4k 60fps no problem. That is my suggestion.

Actually on most cards you can undervolt and keep the same clock speeds and still get the lower temps amd power draw. In some cases you can undervolt and overclock. So undervolting is a great idea but in most cases itdoes need to come at the cost of performance.

This would be a drastic upgrade over your current CPU. I mean compared to the price of the 8350k and it's motherboard without RAM this is much cheaper.

Hello there.

Forum Topic "Why are all of the build guides from staff?"

Nullarc77 3 Builds 2 points 17 days ago

I am fine with this. It would make way for crappy build guides and tons of misinformation. A thing which PCPP as a community usually does a great job of avoiding. And it usually gets called out when present.

However I do think a curated build guide system would be cool. Where you can submit build guides and they staff chooses whether or not to actually post it depending on if it is good or not. But while that would be a cool feature it would take time that the staff probably doesn't have. So I can also see why it has not been done.

I rarely use anything other than Instagram which is what all of my friends use and I log on a one or two times a day. But that's it. I honestly consider PCPP a better social media site than any actual social media site. Because unlike social media sites I can actually engage in intelligent conversation on topics that interest me. If I want to speak to somebody I will text or call them. I also use Reddit a lot. But mainly to look at memes. It's funny. The point of social media which is to let people from all over the world communicate and share ideas in a creative manner gets accomplished better by forums that were originally made for people to discuss computer hardware.

Well there are an estimated 1.8 gamers in the world and 1.2 billion of those are PC gamers according to this.

Which lines up with other articles I have read in the past. So the answer to which platform has the most is PC. Although many people play on both console and PC.

Nullarc77 submitter 3 Builds 1 point 21 days ago

Thanks. I know a lot of things about recruiting are similar across all branches so this does help a lot.

Discipline is definitely something I need more of which is one of the reasons I am considering this route. I need discipline in order to survive in college and I don't think I have nearly enough right now.

And yes reserves do count towards active duty rank so if you were to transfer from the reserves to active as a E3 you would be an E3 still. I know that much at least lol.

I'm not sure about this. I know that in the AF if you have an associates degree you go in as an E3 and if you have a bachelors degree you go in as a Lieutenant II.

That makes sense. And when it comes to degrees that is one of the reasons I want to join the reserves. They offer programs to help pay for college while you are in the reserves. So using that to help pay for my degree then becoming an Officer is what I would do if I qualify those programs. Then near the end of a 4 year reserve contract apply for OCS and become an Ensign(Same rank of Lieutenant II O1).

And I am honestly not that concerned with rank when it comes to joining the reserves. I would really be doing it for the benefits and the experience. And I think having experience as Enlisted would make me a better Officer later.

Again pay is not something I am really concerned about. Just have questions. But thanks. Your answer lines up with what I have found.

Thanks for the help. And I wish you luck in the Chair Air Force lol.

Nullarc77 3 Builds 1 point 24 days ago

Ypu cpuld but it would still be better to get a higher capacity SATA rather than an NVMe drive. NVMe is faster yes but right now most programs either don't use that speed or they load so fast on a SATA drive that it's impossible to notice a difference.

Let me use an example. Right now you can buy an 8 core 16 thread CPU for under $200. But just because you have 8 cores does not mean ganes will use them. Few games will use nore than 6 cores. Once you get to 6 cores ut's clockspeed that matters, That is why the 8600k/9600k while only being 6 cores and 6 threads are faater than AMD's Ryzen 7 CPUs for gaming. They can iver clock much better and have higher IPC's.

Forum Topic "rx 570 in an Optiplex 990?"

Nullarc77 3 Builds 1 point 24 days ago

No reason it would be a bad idea at all. The 570 is more powerful than either the 1050 or 1050ti and as long as you replace the PSU you should not run into any issues there.

As far as the case goes I would measure the room you have with a measuring tape and compare it to the GPU's dimensions.

The 2400 is still a capable processor and 8gb of RAM is enough. But with the dropping RAM prices getting another 8gb(Assuming the motherboard has enough slots) should be cheap.

Forum Topic "Is this a good mid range build?"

Nullarc77 3 Builds 1 point 24 days ago

I would also consider getting an M2 SSD rather than a Sata. They are a little more expensive but twice as fast.

Well actually more than twice as fast. But for most people that speed will be unusable. Unless you are transferring large files(10gb+) constantly it won't really have an impact on your workload. Windows won't boot any faster. Few games will have a difference in load times.

Better to have the higher storage capacity offered by SATA SSD's.

Nullarc77 3 Builds 1 point 29 days ago

Okay thanks.

Well unless you are going for a K series chip there is no reason to go for a Z series motherboard. In fact if you aren't going to overclock it would be better to go with Ryzen. Also NVMe will have almost no impact unless you are constantly reading and writing to extremely large files. For most people standard SATA is better and it would be better to go with a SATA SSD for the higher capacity for the price. But even then you can get more storage for cheaper and it still be NVMe in case you do move large files often.

In the end you will save about $100(I type with the dollar sign but I mean GBP) and get similar if not better performance.

And the 200ge too.

Also the CPU side is basically the same. The APUs are not based on the refined 12nm process. The only differences is the base clock speed. So once overclocked they are the same as far as CPU. So if you are using it with an external GPU jsut get which ever is cheaper.

I agree with you when it comes to power supplies, however the difference between a good bronze PSU and a gold one is about $30, not $100.

You also don't pay attention to details. Because uf ypu had you would see that I clearly stated Platinum and Titanium rated PSUs.

What office has a Pentium/ i3 in 2019? You can't expect to be taken seriously as a business with i3 computers,

Considering they are cheap and work just fine for web browsing and basic office tasks most do. i5s are generally the highest end CPUs you will see. And why can't you be taken seriously as a business if you use CPUs that are perfectly capable of the tasks needed?

even Dell's budget option workstation computers have an i5 at the least.

Bull.

All of these are typical office OCs. Now tell me do you seriously think basic office tasks that for years have been accomplished on 2c/4t CPUs will in 2019 suddenly use more than that? They won't. More intense office tasks may use 4c/4t but single threaded performance is the most important thing.

Op's budget was 700 at the most for a reason, he clearly needs that processing power.

You keep bringing up something which has nothing to do with this conversation. Why????

Once spreadsheets start getting more complex you need a more powerful pc,

That would be a valid arguenent, if this were 1997. Seriously do you actually have benchmarks to show this?

and the op I'm talking about needing it for accounting where they'll use encryption software, number crunching software etc.

Again they are irrelevant to this conversation. But do you have any evidence that the sofware they were using actually needed a $700 PC?

200ge isn't even faster than a i5 2400

No it isn't. But the difference is extremely small.

https://youtu.be/E-PR-aU3d0E

The first few benchmarks are iust general comparison performance benchmarks. And the 200ge is not that far behind the 2400.

On the Intel side CPUs have not really had a drastic increase in single threaded soeed sibce the 2000 series.

Also while Userbenchmark is an okay rough comparison, it is a rough comparison. For accurate benchmarks best to use something else.

Forum Topic "I'm being unfairly down voted"

Nullarc77 3 Builds 3 points 1 month ago

ok first of all I don't know where y'all got the $500 budget office pc thing but op's budget was 600-700,

As I explained prior that $500 is an example number. I was just using it as an example and mot referring to any specific instance of your part lists. I was giving you an example of what I have observed from looking at parts lists you have created, but I was not looking at a specific one.

and he would be working with large spreadsheets, and book keeping. They need a fast cpu for encryption, file compression, creating complex accounting models, that build you put together just doesn't meet his needs at all. They also need a high efficiency power supply because it will most likely stay on through the night.

Yeah if whoever you are referring too did need that fast of a CPU, then why are most PCs found in officer building that are from OEMs like Dell equipped with Pentiums or i3s? Spreadsheet is not an extremely intense task.

Power supple effiency on a build like this that ia only drawing less than 100 wats is not that important. With an 80+ Bronze rated power supply when at or near the max wattage of the unit, roughly 85% if the power drawn will actually be used, the rest will be excess that is wasted. Now when the system is drawing kuch less than that the efficiency will go up. And if the PSU is 450 watts and drawing less than 100 wats than the efficiency will be more like 90%. That number will not really change until you go to 80+ Platinum or 80+ Titanium. Which costs hundreds of dollars and are generally stupid choices.

Also when a PC is in sleep mode it draws only a few watts. So "on over night" won't be a problem. Heck when the thing is at idle it will be drawing like 50 watts. The money on electricity saved by going to a higher efficiency PSU will be literally pennies a week. All that for an extra $100? It would take years if not decades in order for it to be worth it.

Business environment = multitasking. This is what I mean by down playing user's needs

Yeah multitasking can be accomplished by a CPU with 4 threads that is fairly modern and has decent clock speeds. The 200ge accomplishes all of that.

My Mom has a 2c/4t laptop running at 2.5ghz and she uses that for photo editing, web browsing, and office work. She has no problems with it. The 200ge is much more powerful than that.

Forum Topic "I'm being unfairly down voted"

Nullarc77 3 Builds 3 points 1 month ago

I am a firm believer that there is no such thing as overkill when it comes to pc part picking

Well that is your opinion. And while in most cases I can agree, but in the realm of an office PC there really is no reason to spend $500 on it(As per the example I gave earlier) when most of that performance will be wasted. You don't need much for web browsing and doing spread sheets. And if you have a budget of $500 you can almost build 2 office PCs for that price that will have the same effectiveness as building one for $500.

Here is a cheap but perfectly capable office PC build that will do any basic office work task without problems.

Both of them will do the same basic web browsing and office work with no problem at all. The only difference being that one costs twice as much for no reason other than costing twice as much.

Contrary to popular belief in this thread, I do research my part lists thoroughly, I don't know all the big fancy words like y'all but I know whats fast and what's a good deal.

First of all I never said you didn't do any research, I just said you should do more research into how all the parts work and what tasks they excel at in order to make better informed decisions.

You either know computer parts or you don't. You either know what is good for specific applications or you don't. You can't be ignorant of something and know what it does and how well it does.

I mainly post on create a part list for me instead of part list opinions because the users there just want a part list and don't need an explanation or opinion.

That is the exact place where people need information as to why. They are generally the least informed of the people looking for help on this site. So it is critical you give them your rational behind your parts.

Forum Topic "I'm being unfairly down voted"

Nullarc77 3 Builds 3 points 1 month ago

I think you completely and totally missed my poinpt. When putting together for example an office PC with a budget of say $500 without anything else, just the hardware. If the PC is only going to be for office work you can far under shoot the $500. Saving the person money and not buying extra stuff they don't need.

Like said I don't know the ins and outs of a computer, I just know how to make a good pc part list.

From what I have seen the best people on this site for putting together part lists are the ones who have the most knowledge of performance. If you don't than your build will be over looking several things. Looking at your part lists you have put together it seems like you are honestly trying, but you need to do more research to make better informed decisions.

I do have a rational behind my part choices and I explain them when questioned

Nothing is more annoying to a person trying to get help than a list with absolutely not rational to the decosions. Because too many questions pop i. their head. Better to save you and them more time by explaining why you chose those parts in the first place.

A few things I have noticed while looking over your part lists is that you seem to stick to the budget even when you can go way under and have it not really affect performance, mainly on office type builds. You also do not rationalize your part choices. As in you don't explain ehy you chose something.
