Bought this on eBay for $140 USD. Works fine, as if I bought it brand new. After playing AAA for an hour, it’s only at around 45% max load. Haven’t done an overclock yet, but was thinking about it

Released in 2017, even now this keeps up with my RTX 2070 Super at 1440p gaming, and delivers smooth Windows experience thanks to its 8 cores - 16 threads. My Ryzen 7 1700 is clocked at 3.8GHz at default voltages. On UserBenchMark, my CPU is in the 99th percentile with the overclock.

from completed build The Myth Buster (2017)

Ah, the first Ryzen CPU ever released. In a market of endless 14nm+++++ Skylake refresh CPU's, It turned premium features like not needing to upgrade your motherboard every year and higher-than-quad-core hyperthreaded processors into mid range standards. It includes in the box the AMD Wraith Spire cooler, the first ever CPU cooler with RGB and overclock support to be included in a CPU box. It destroyed the following myths:

    • Ryzen CPU's are not good at single core.
    • The Ryzen 1700 costs $299.
    • Radeon and AMD parts have awful drivers.
    • Building a PC that can do other things than gaming costs more than building a gaming-only PC.
    • No one needs 8 cores.
    • No one needs multitasking.
    • It is impossible to game at 4K60 for less than 500W.

It's 4Ghz variant, the 1800X, was crowned by enthusiasts "A worthy successor to the FX-9590."

Excellent went it first came out in 2017, and for the price now (around $100), still not a bad CPU at all. if you can get a good used one for $100 or less it will make a great budget CPU for both workloads with its 8 cores 16 threads and gaming on the side.

    Performance is on par with Ryzen 3 3100 , Ryzen 3 3300X, and Ryzen 5 1600AF.

Got it used for $170 CAD, great value. More than enough performance for what I do.

There's not much to be said about the R7 1700 that hasn't already been said. There are newer Ryzens that are more powerful, but this one is still very strong, and makes a good budget CPU for certain kinds of workloads.

16 efficient threads at 3.7Ghz for 100 USD? LOL, I'll take it any day of the week.
